WHERE CAN I BUY BOOKS ONLINE THAT ISN‘T AFFILIATED WITH AMAZON?! I‘ve hated Amazon for a long time, but because of the pandemic, not having a car, and moving to a new place with a lack of bookstores with an online presence, I‘ve been buying my books from Amazon. However, in the last month I‘ve had to return three damaged beyond use books (and a tank top they sent instead of a bra). I‘ve just had enough. There has to be other options.

GingerAntics As readers, we‘ve got to find a way to break Amazon‘s stranglehold on the book industry. 3y
BarbaraJean Bookshop.org! A portion of their proceeds goes to support local indie bookshops, or the full profit from the sale if you search for & designate a specific local bookstore. More expensive than Amazon, but worth checking out if you‘re passionate about an alternative. https://bookshop.org/pages/about 3y
SomedayAlmost I am a big fan of Book People in Austin, & successfully shipped Books from them to several parts of the country at Christmas. Murder by the Book in Houston is nationally known for mysteries/thrillers/true crime & ships, & they just started a monthly book subscription box! Longfellow Books in Maine is another great store that will ship throughout New England: https://www.bookpeople.com 3y
See All 18 Comments
RamsFan1963 BetterWorldBooks.com A part of your purchase price goes to funding literacy programs locally, nationally and world wide. 3y
Lcsmcat If you don‘t need the latest new releases, try ThriftBooks.com or (supporting literacy programs) BetterWorldBooks.com. Both have excellent customer service. 3y
Hooked_on_books As already mentioned, Bookshop.org is a great option. I love the Powell‘s website for book buying and they‘re an indie. I never buy books from Amazon, so I can assure it‘s possible to avoid them! I don‘t agree with their practices and almost never buy anything from them, only things I can‘t find anywhere else, so maybe once or twice a year. 3y
ManyWordsLater Pick a city or town. Google independent bookstore and order from there! I‘ve started doing that with toys. 3y
ManyWordsLater Pick a city or town. Google independent bookstore and order from there! I‘ve started doing that with toys. 3y
GingerAntics @ManyWordsLater I‘ve done that. I ended up finding one through the Midwest Indie Bookstore site. They don‘t have a very good selection and it‘s not diverse at all. For example, “William Shakespeare” brings up 4 results, only one of which is actually written by William Shakespeare (his sonnets). 3y
GingerAntics @SomedayAlmost I‘ll look into Book People. 3y
GingerAntics @BarbaraJean @RamsFan1963 @Lcsmcat @Hooked_on_books all of those sound great! I try to by new when I can to support the authors, but I buy used when necessary. I had no idea there were so many options, or that they benefit communities like that. I knew you guys would have what I needed. Now, to figure out which sites have which books from my wish list... 3y
Lcsmcat Another option, for new or used, is Powells in Washington state. It‘s huge, but independent and they ship all over. Powell‘s.com 3y
GingerAntics @Lcsmcat I‘ve heard people talking about that one before. @Hooked_on_books suggested them, too. I‘ve heard good things about them. 3y
Hooked_on_books @Lcsmcat As a former Oregonian, I just have to correct you. Powell‘s, that wonderful store (one of the largest indies), is in Portland, Oregon. I have spent many happy hours browsing their stores. 😉 3y
Lcsmcat @Hooked_on_books 🤦🏻‍♀️ How could I make that mistake! You can tell I‘ve never been lucky enough to visit! 3y
Hooked_on_books @Lcsmcat It‘s amazing if you ever get the chance! But bring a chaperone! 😂 3y
GingerAntics @Lcsmcat and an extra suit case 3y
Lcsmcat @Hooked_on_books If I had a bucket list, seeing the NW and going to Powell‘s would definitely be on it! 3y

Has anyone picked their first reads yet? I can‘t decide!

alysonimagines I chose West with Giraffes and Gerta, since I like WWII-era historical fiction. Also I like giraffes, and I have Czech heritage, so there‘s another personal plus for each of these titles. 3y
Crazeedi Yep, just posted my picks! 3y
angel1 I went with Hadley and Grace and Widowish as my 2 choices 3y

Today‘s surprise delivery #bookhaul - including several for @TheBookHippie ‘s classic children‘s books readalong. The Little Witch is sticky but I‘m trying not to think too hard on that.

Here‘s the problem - this is the third time I‘ve ordered stuff from Amazon and my cart has randomly doubled one item (and charged for both) and I don‘t notice until it arrives. WTF?! And I‘d pay shipping on a return so it‘s not worth it. Effing Amazon.

TheBookHippie Oh nooo 😩😩😩 mine are still enroute ... somewhere 😬 3y
inthegreensandblues The double order happened to me once and when I contacted customer service, they credited me the charge but told me not to bother returning it; I guess if the book is cheap enough, it's not worth the postage to them? Then I put the extra in the Friends of the Library donation box. ☺️ 3y
FlowerFairy I agree with @inthegreensandblues I‘ve received incorrect orders before and contacted amazon. They‘ll credit you and send the correct item or tell you to keep the double and still credit you. 3y
See All 6 Comments
ravenlee Hmmm, @inthegreensandblues @FlowerFairy I‘ll have to try it. Last time I contacted them my MIL sent me books for a gift and there was a double, and they had me ship back the extra so the refund ended up being something like $2.17 when they took out the shipping cost. I guess it can‘t hurt to ask. 3y
ravenlee @TheBookHippie they‘ll get there! Plenty of time. Now, I (naturally) closed out my browser window after ordering the books I needed...without making a note as to the order of said books. Could you post the link again, please? 3y

I had no idea about this. What a great iniciative! I wish this was more widespread across Europe. US and UK friends, check out @bookshop_org_uk on Instagram for more info! ✨✨✨✨✨ Indie bookshops need our help, more than ever. So many have already had to shut down in the current economic climate.

CampbellTaraL I'm US based and used it for the first time last week and can say it works better than advertised. I set my "home shop" to a little indie I like nearby, ordered my books, and no kidding, they arrived the next day. I thought for sure my brain was messing with me, but nope. So many good things to say about this service. 3y
MoonWitch94 Wow, how great! I‘m in the US and will have to check this out! 3y
RachelAmphlett Superb news - I‘ve made sure all of my books were listed with the US Bookshop.org site and they‘ve automatically added them all to the UK one too - I love supporting indies! 3y
LibrarianRyan I love bookshop.org. It has become my fav online book store. And I love that I can direct who the profits go to. 3y

CSeydel I got this notification too, but when I tried to buy an ebook the credit was nowhere to be found. Do you know how to redeem it? 5y

Traci1 If you click the link in the email, it shows something like "eligible titles." I think it's only good for a select few books, none under $11 that I saw. I could be wrong. 5y
Hestapleton @CSeydel @Traci1 yeah it‘s just select books. Cheapest is $9.99. I think it deducts automatically. I didn‘t see anything that I HAD to have, so I think I‘m gonna skip it. 5y
alisiakae @Traci1 Yeah, you‘re right. 😠 I thought this was one of my credits for choosing no-rush Prime shipping. I‘m skipping. 5y
CSeydel @Hestapleton @Traci1 thanks. It came up as a notification on my Kindle - I didn‘t see an email - and when I clicked it just took me to the kindle store. I was baffled 5y
Traci1 @CSeydel @Hestapleton @4thhouseontheleft I feel like it's deliberately misleading. I don't usually have negative feelings about Amazon, but this seems really sketchy and intended to get people to buy books that don't actually qualify. Probably assuming they won't notice or won't go to the trouble to return the books if they do notice. 5y
CSeydel @Traci1 That was how I interpreted it, too. 5y
alisiakae @traci1 @CSeydel @Hestapleton I completely agree! Amazon is usually pretty straightforward, this is definitely shady, I‘m tempted to put in a complaint about their misleading advertising. 5y
inthegreensandblues I got this notification yesterday and was thinking maybe they made a mistake bc I already used it. I did recently (within a month) have a $5 ebook credit but I used it immediately. 5y
Traci1 @4thhouseontheleft if the link in the email took you JUST to the books that qualified it would be one thing. But they were just at the top of a bunch that don't seem to be eligible. If I weren't such a pessimistic person, I doubt I'd have noticed it. 5y

This is why I don‘t use Amazon, especially when ordering books. This man has way too much power and I don‘t want to support him. If he ever decides what we can read we‘re in trouble. My local independent bookstore offers many options for purchasing books, including audiobooks. Okay, rant over.

saresmoore And they own Book Depository and AbeBooks. And then they do web hosting & cloud storage for half of the Internet... 5y
Suet624 @saresmoore I knew about book depository but forgot about AbeBooks. Good Lord. 5y
Leftcoastzen Bezos fingers in all the pies.😢 5y
See All 19 Comments
MaGoose And they own the supermarket Whole Foods. I don't buy from Amazon unless I absolutely have to. I frequent Barnes and Noble since I don't think there are any independent bookstores in my area anymore. 5y
JamieArc I didn‘t know about GoodReads 😣 5y
Ashley_Nicoletto As easy as it is to dislike Amazon, they also make many things reading included more accessible to many. There are a lot of people who live in areas without bookstores or good library branches. Many people also couldn‘t afford to buy from their local independent bookstores. Being able to pay full price from a local indie is a luxury. Food for thought. 5y
Suet624 @Ashley_Nicoletto I understand, but Powell‘s bookstore and Barnes and Noble also offer deals and secondhand books. There are book swaps. I bet even Litsy members would be happy to offer book swaps for a book you were particularly interested in. There is a considerable danger when there is such an accumulation of power by one organization. 5y
Ashley_Nicoletto @Suet624 Maybe. But I read hundreds of books a year with a combination of my local library and Amazon. After a rousing round of bed begs that I got from library books I no longer check them out or bring home second hand books. I mostly eread for this same reason. Amazon is the most accessible for that. It would be annoying if every time I needed a new book I was requesting a swap on Litsy. And the shipping wouldn‘t make it feasible. 5y
Ashley_Nicoletto I‘m not saying your wrong about power being dangerous. It can be is misused. But there‘s also a certain level of privilege that comes with buying only from a local indie that isn‘t granted to many. 5y
Suet624 @Ashley_Nicoletto thanks for sharing your thoughts. Just to be clear, and I know you‘re not implying anything, but I qualify for Medicaid so there‘s no privilege here. 😀 5y
Nebklvr Isn‘t litsy owned by amazon now? 5y
Suet624 @Nebklvr is LibraryThing owned by Amazon? 5y
Nebklvr No idea. I just found a week ago that they owned abesbooks 5y
Suet624 @Nebklvr I would have to go with a hard no on Litsy being owned by Amazon. I don‘t think that‘s the case. 5y
Nebklvr @Suet624 it comes up as sold by amazon digital services but maybe i am doing something wrong 5y
Suet624 @Nebklvr gulp. I may have to ask officially but I‘m scared now. 5y
BookNAround @Suet624 Amazon has a minority share in LibraryThing so technically they don‘t own them, which means they don‘t own Litsy either. I try very hard not to use Amazon if I can for many more reasons than already articulated here, including their poor treatment of workers. 5y
Suet624 @BookNAround thanks so much for the info. Have you read Nomadland yet? That talks a lot about how they deal with their employees. 5y
ValerieAndBooks I have only ordered from amazon for books I can‘t find elsewhere (once or twice) after they consistently kept sending new books in bad condition (poor packaging). I canceled my prime membership b/c of that! 5y

Fun swap #bookmail today.
It included: the final touches for the #readthemoviesswap. Another book for the #witchpleaseswap (plus I'm going to Salem this weekend) and one more for one of my two #allhallowsreadswap packages.
One of the books so intrigued me when I ordered it Monday that I got it for myself at the library yesterday. @DoonTheGoon @monalyisha

PSA:
NetGalley's team got back to me about the review issues with Amazon. They are aware of Amazon's practice.

I've copied snippets of their message.

There was also an announcement about the changes to Amazon's review policy on the amazon blog: https://blog.aboutamazon.com/innovation/update-on-customer-reviews.

@Jess7 The 'in exchange for a review' seems to be the main problem.

JoScho @Jess7 but I was under the impression that we needed to make it clear we received it from Netgalley. I guess not. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 6y
Jess7 Interesting! @julesG - thanks for posting! And @JoScho yeah I thought so too. 6y
julesG @JoScho I thought so too. 6y
VeganCleopatra The Amazon notice says it excludes books though. I also thought we had to make our ARCs clear. I even once had someone notify Goodreads that I hadn't put a note that I was reviewing an arc and they threatened to take the review down. So stupid. 6y
julesG @VeganCleopatra You're right about the amazon notice, but they seem to not stick to this rule. 6y

Remember my earlier rant about not being able to review books on amazon? I just heard back from the customer service, they have checked my review status and I'm now able to write reviews again - I will try to make sure not to write the word #NetGalley into my reviews in the future.

#amazonhiccough

Jess7 I didn‘t know you couldn‘t use NetGalley in an Amazon review? I think I probably have? Maybe not with the hashtag in front, but I know I have used the phrase “NetGalley” 6y
Sarah83 Why can't you use netgallery in your reviews? 6y
ephemeralwaltz Also interested in the answer to @jess7 and @Sarah83's question. 6y
See All 11 Comments
julesG @Jess7 @Sarah83 @ephemeralwaltz - I just remembered that one author who sent me a galley personally reminded me not to write the words 'free, ARC, in exchange for a review' into my amazon review. Apparently amazon uses dome sort of bot to filter those reviews out. Hence I've decided not to use 'NetGalley' either. Better safe than sorry. 😉 6y
Jess7 I thought per FCC guidelines we are required to disclose if we received a book for free in exchange for an honest review 6y
julesG @Jess7 Yep. That's what I thought too. My problem with 'being banned from reviews' started when I wrote the above mentioned words into a review. Said review was taken off the page, too. But I've seen other reviews with "you know what" in it and they were not censored. 6y
julesG @Jess7 My reviews are also mainly identical to what I write on NetGalley and Goodreads, so it can't have been a foul language issue or spoiler. 6y
Jess7 That‘s interesting. I haven‘t run into that issue yet, but I haven‘t posted all of my reviews to Amazon (just some) and of the ones I have posted, some are ones where I bought the book myself and am therefore a verified purchaser to those, so maybe bc of the mixture I wasn‘t flagged. But that‘s weird. 6y
julesG @Jess7 The funny thing is, I eventually cracked and wrote them another, this time not so polite, email was because I couldn't review a book that I bought, a physical copy even. It is weird and I hope this is resolved for good now. 6y
OutsmartYourShelf Strange, but have heard of others experiencing similar problems. I usually say along the lines of “Thanks to NetGalley and publishers (insert name) for the opportunity to read an ARC. I am voluntarily giving an honest review.” Not had any issues as yet. (edited) 6y
LibrarianRyan @Jess7 @julesG I believe does FCC ruling does not apply to Amazon because it's not technically Social Media, it's a shopping platform. Personally I think they are needed there too... plus in a way Netgalley could be considered a competitor. And as such Amazon wouldn't be required to post. Just my two cents. 6y

What is going on with Amazon? I cannot write reviews on Amazon any more, doesn't matter which ending I put after the dot (com/co.uk/de/...), I cannot write reviews. At least the German page offered some kind of clue, they write I might be associated to the author and hence not be impartial.

WHAT???

Is this because I'm on NetGalley?

I'm furious.

Have written to customer service several times and not heard back. 😬😡

Jess_Read_This That‘s awful! I know I struggled with product reviews on Amazon. If I was unhappy with a product/service they wouldn‘t let the review go through. I found it so biased. I haven‘t attempted book reviews bc of the issues I have had w product reviews. 6y
JoScho Someone else posted about this recently but I don‘t remember who. She said the same thing that they thought she knew the author or something like that. 6y
Sarah83 Maybe it's only a temporary problem? 6y

Sarah83 Definitely not. I will look, if I can write reviews and I will tell you. 😊 6y
Quirkybookworm That‘s why I don‘t deal with Amazon anymore. It has been 6 years now. I‘ve been seeing unforeseen problems and I knew I needed to cut my losses with the corporation. I‘m glad I did and there‘s no turning back. 6y
julesG @Quirkybookworm It's just annoying. I wanted to be a good NetGalley reviewer and leave reviews on Amazon. Well, I'll just have to review on NetGalley and Goodreads then. 6y
julesG @Sarah83 thanks 6y
julesG @JoScho Glad I'm not alone. It's weird though. @Jess_Read_This Just wanted to help some authors. 6y
OrangeMooseReads That‘s ridiculous! Amazon is getting worse everyday 6y
CampbellTaraL I couldn't leave a review for a product (not a book) because Amazon said I hadn't purchased it, even though I was accessing the review panel from my purchased queue. I think Amazon is having trouble with their system in general. 😕 6y
Tamra A friend tried to leave a legitimate review of a lawn mower and first made him jump thru hoops only to eventually refuse to post it. 🤨 Reminds me not to trust ratings online, except Litsy of course. 6y
julesG @taraWritesSci it's not always a wonky system. Sometimes they seem to be biased. 😬 6y
julesG @Tamra Yeah. It's crazy how customer unfriendly their interface is. It took me ages to find the email of the customer service on the website. It seems they do everything to prevent customers from reaching out with problems. 6y
