Fifth Season | N K Jemisin
"Intricate and extraordinary." - "New York Times "on" The Fifth Season "(A "New York Times" Notable Book of 2015) The start of a new fantasy trilogy by Hugo, Nebula & World Fantasy Award nominated author N.K. Jemisin. THIS IS THE WAY THE WORLD ENDS... FOR THE LAST TIME. A season of endings has begun. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy. For more from N. K. Jan and I have finished our first monthly read in our partner reading challenge. This was his first fantasy novel (very outside his comfort zone). I picked the January book, he will pick February which must include a book related to either Valentine‘s Day or to honor black history month. Since neither of us like romance novels, I assume he will want to go with a book for black history month. Any recommendations for either category?

JenP We tried to pick very broad categories for every month (some tied to holidays or national months) to allow us greater flexibility to pick books. He‘s a non-fiction reader and I‘m mostly a literary fiction reader. English is not his first language but he is fluent. However if reading in English, some of the older style writing would be harder for him. 2mo
Bookzombie You could probably do both categories for February by picking up a historical romance by Beverly Jenkins. 🙂 I have only read a couple but enjoyed them. 2mo
Bookzombie Or you could go with this one for non-fiction. Since they are graphic novels you could probably do the whole trilogy in February. 2mo
JenP @Bookzombie I‘ve read those already. Great recommendations though 2mo

It took me a few attempts to really get into this book but once I did, I really appreciated it. Loved how all the threads came together at the end although I think it merits another read to really understand everything.

I really loved this epic fantasy packed full of earth-based powers, found family, inclusive character design, and tragedy. The 3-character style worked so well. This starts slow, as many epic fantasy do, and has such an interesting payoff as character stories come together. #LGBTQIA #Rocks #EpicFantasy

I‘m not sure what I missed with this one! I was really looking forward to this story with so many glowing reviews but for whatever reason, I just couldn‘t get into it. The world building and characters were good so it was either the writing or the story itself or most likely a combination of the two. #Booked2023 ~Afrofuturism book

Cinfhen I tried this one, but I bailed early on! It does have mostly good reviews 7mo

Can‘t say enough good about this series. It‘s complex, emotional, full of #afrofuturism, and includes a diverse cast of characters, including #nonbinaryortrans . I inhaled all three books in a row. Checks off a lot of boxes for my reading preferences. And, of course, #Booked2023 prompts.

Cinfhen That‘s the one prompt Im still working on 😅I couldn‘t get into the first book - maybe I‘ll try again…. 9mo

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB I hear ya. I‘m an SFF reader, so it‘s comfortable space for me, even as it it‘s often dark. If Goliath doesn‘t work, look at some of Amazon‘s Original Stories collections. A fantastic journey of a book. A pinnacle of what a fantasy book can be. The world building is immaculate, the characters are multifaceted and are given room to grow. The writing is vivid and wonderful.
Very deserving of all the awards it has won.

Mind-blowing novel with an Earth, a bit different than ours, that keeps destroying its inhabitants in various seasons and gifted individuals who can control seismic activity, etc. Others try to control them. Plus mysterious obelisks with power, etc. It switches between a handful of characters. Very worthwhile if you like this genre.

I was on vacation driving (a lot!) through New Mexico so I grabbed this on audio and really enjoyed it!
The world building is wonderful, I really enjoyed how the dramatic beginning draws you in and explains the world right up front. I found the characters to be well drawn, solid and interesting.
The book seemed to wrap around and felt complete to me so I am unsure if I will continue the series

#OnThisDay in 1972 Nora Keita Jemisin was born. Raised in Mobile, Alabama Jemisin spent much of her time immersed in fairy tales and fantasy at the local library, and summers in NYC with her father who introduced her to Twilight Zone and Star Trek. In 2015 she became the first Black author to win the Hugo Award for Best Novel for The Fifth Season. 👇 #HistoryGetsLIT

This was a very well-thought out, imagined, high fantasy. At first I didn‘t know how the 3 perspectives of the women would come together, and then it all crashed together in shocking clarity. I very rarely expect a twist on fantasy, but man. Very enjoyable. I will definitely get the next two.

Side note for audio, the 3 perspectives were at first confusing. You had to really focus to figure them out.

This is a strange story set sometime in the distant future when Earth has become much more geologically active, possibly due to human interference. Some humans have evolved to be able to control geokinetic activity (orogenes), and they can protect regions but also destroy. The book starts at the end, when someone tears open a fault line and begins the end of the world, at least for most life. The characters are not very relatable, but I think ⏬

LitStephanie that is intentional because they have evolved a bit from current time (even regular humans can "sess" seismic activity) and society is much different. The book jumps around in POV and in time, but in an interconnectung web, rather than confusing, manner. It's even kind of humorously narrated. 2y

#LittensDressedInBlood #Day12 #TheKillingMoon I was going to go for the authors book with the same title as the prompt but thought it was a bit obvious. This trilogy by her is also about a moon, one that‘s killing the inhabitants of this world for reasons which I can‘t go into without giving away a major spoiler. One of the best dystopian SciFi series I‘ve ever read. And I don‘t much like dystopian.

Great world building, fun magic, and relatable characters. I was hooked from the prologue! The story switches between perspectives and does so without feeling clunky. Also, I wasn't overwhelmed by the world building even though it's an epic fantasy. listened to the audio book on this one and the reader was wonderful! Strong female lead, lgbtq friendly, and a cast full of racial variety. A great read and I'm excited for the next two!

Wow! This book was overwhelming at first, because of the intricate world building and the way Jemisin just drops you in to everything. (Pro tip - there is a very helpful appendix with vocab and history notes at the back of the book!) BUT the hard work definitely pays off. I was completely fascinated by the characters, the world, and the unanswered questions. Definitely plan to keep going in the trilogy. #thebrokenearth #thefifthseason #jemisin

I feel guilty so this is not an official review, but I‘m bailing on this audiobook after 4 1/2 hours. It‘s clearly well-written, but I find myself not caring about any of the characters, getting annoyed by the tense shifts when the POV changes, and being really uncomfortable with some of the plot points. I‘m getting the same sluggish vibes here that I did with TNOTW by Rothfuss. Maybe high fantasy isn‘t for me. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Onto a murder book. 😂

Lauram Same! I‘ve tried to read this a few times and thought it was just timing/life preventing me from enjoying this series. It‘s just not for me. 3y

Book #12 of the year: “The Fifth Season” by N.K. Jemisin

Sci-fi/fantasy written by a Black woman AND it‘s a trilogy! This series takes place on earth in the distant future. Some people have developed the power to control rock and earth, and they‘re either enslaved or executed. It‘s an intriguing book that keeps you wondering what happens next.
