Fifth Season | N K Jemisin
"Intricate and extraordinary." - "New York Times "on" The Fifth Season "(A "New York Times" Notable Book of 2015) The start of a new fantasy trilogy by Hugo, Nebula & World Fantasy Award nominated author N.K. Jemisin. THIS IS THE WAY THE WORLD ENDS... FOR THE LAST TIME. A season of endings has begun. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy. For more from N. K. Jemisin, check out: The Inheritance Trilogy "The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms" "The Broken Kingdoms" "The Kingdom of Gods" "The Inheritance Trilogy "(omnibus edition) "Shades in Shadow: An Inheritance Triptych" (e-only short fiction) "The Awakened Kingdom "(e-only novella) Dreamblood Duology "The Killing Moon" "The Shadowed Sun" ""The Broken Earth"The Fifth Season""The Obelisk Gate"

Photo from White Sands National Park New Mexico

I was on vacation driving (a lot!) through New Mexico so I grabbed this on audio and really enjoyed it!
The world building is wonderful, I really enjoyed how the dramatic beginning draws you in and explains the world right up front. I found the characters to be well drawn, solid and interesting.
The book seemed to wrap around and felt complete to me so I am unsure if I will continue the series

5feet.of.fury I LOVE this series. 2mo

#OnThisDay in 1972 Nora Keita Jemisin was born. Raised in Mobile, Alabama Jemisin spent much of her time immersed in fairy tales and fantasy at the local library, and summers in NYC with her father who introduced her to Twilight Zone and Star Trek. In 2015 she became the first Black author to win the Hugo Award for Best Novel for The Fifth Season. 👇 #HistoryGetsLIT

This was a very well-thought out, imagined, high fantasy. At first I didn‘t know how the 3 perspectives of the women would come together, and then it all crashed together in shocking clarity. I very rarely expect a twist on fantasy, but man. Very enjoyable. I will definitely get the next two.

Side note for audio, the 3 perspectives were at first confusing. You had to really focus to figure them out.

5feet.of.fury The writing style took me a bit to adjust to, but I absolutely loved that trilogy 7mo
TheAromaofBooks I found The Fifth Season very interesting, but overall the trilogy was too relentlessly depressing for me to really enjoy it (and I found the sections written in the second person to be very annoying). But a lot of people love these (and not everyone needs HEAs like I do haha) so you may enjoy this one more than I did!! 7mo

This is a strange story set sometime in the distant future when Earth has become much more geologically active, possibly due to human interference. Some humans have evolved to be able to control geokinetic activity (orogenes), and they can protect regions but also destroy. The book starts at the end, when someone tears open a fault line and begins the end of the world, at least for most life. The characters are not very relatable, but I think ⏬

LitStephanie that is intentional because they have evolved a bit from current time (even regular humans can "sess" seismic activity) and society is much different. The book jumps around in POV and in time, but in an interconnectung web, rather than confusing, manner. It's even kind of humorously narrated. 9mo
sprainedbrain I freaking love this series. Excellent review! 9mo

Really good and exciting, I enjoyed the world building and the characters. The world feels unique with deep lore and the magic systems seem so fresh and exciting. Hated that it ended on a cliff hanger but I guess that just means I have to read the second book soon!

This was my favorite read from #March even if I was “supposed” to read it in January. It took me a little while and a couple checkouts to get into it, but once I was in I was fascinated. True to form, I had an Isabel Allende book on my shelf all month and waited too long to start it, so I‘ll put it back in the general TBR category. 🤦🏻‍♀️

#LittensDressedInBlood #Day12 #TheKillingMoon I was going to go for the authors book with the same title as the prompt but thought it was a bit obvious. This trilogy by her is also about a moon, one that‘s killing the inhabitants of this world for reasons which I can‘t go into without giving away a major spoiler. One of the best dystopian SciFi series I‘ve ever read. And I don‘t much like dystopian.

Great world building, fun magic, and relatable characters. I was hooked from the prologue! The story switches between perspectives and does so without feeling clunky. Also, I wasn't overwhelmed by the world building even though it's an epic fantasy. listened to the audio book on this one and the reader was wonderful! Strong female lead, lgbtq friendly, and a cast full of racial variety. A great read and I'm excited for the next two!

Wow! This book was overwhelming at first, because of the intricate world building and the way Jemisin just drops you in to everything. (Pro tip - there is a very helpful appendix with vocab and history notes at the back of the book!) BUT the hard work definitely pays off. I was completely fascinated by the characters, the world, and the unanswered questions. Definitely plan to keep going in the trilogy. #thebrokenearth #thefifthseason #jemisin

This came to me with near universal acclaim so I was pretty sure I‘d like it, and I did, but it was SO grim and violent, and the violence was usually against children, which is just extremely not what I want to read about? I figured out the spoiler of how people were linked pretty early on but I still couldn‘t put it down, and I still want to read the next two. The world building was incredible.

I feel guilty so this is not an official review, but I‘m bailing on this audiobook after 4 1/2 hours. It‘s clearly well-written, but I find myself not caring about any of the characters, getting annoyed by the tense shifts when the POV changes, and being really uncomfortable with some of the plot points. I‘m getting the same sluggish vibes here that I did with TNOTW by Rothfuss. Maybe high fantasy isn‘t for me. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Onto a murder book. 😂

Lauram Same! I‘ve tried to read this a few times and thought it was just timing/life preventing me from enjoying this series. It‘s just not for me. 2y
jmtrivera Some of those were stressful to me reading this too, but I found a lot of it worth the time put in for me. That said, it is definitely not going to be everyone's cup of tea! Read what makes you happy. 😊 2y
DGRachel @jmtrivera I‘m not giving up on it yet. I just need to wait for a different mindset, I think, and take the time to read it in print. I have other reading priorities right now, so the paperback copy will sit on my shelf a little longer. ☺️ 2y

Book #12 of the year: “The Fifth Season” by N.K. Jemisin

Sci-fi/fantasy written by a Black woman AND it‘s a trilogy! This series takes place on earth in the distant future. Some people have developed the power to control rock and earth, and they‘re either enslaved or executed. It‘s an intriguing book that keeps you wondering what happens next.

Once in a while, a book will come along that deals with some pretty heavy hitting themes and nails them in a disturbingly perfect way. The Fifth Season is that kind of book. If you do not appreciate dark fantasy books, steer clear of this one. #darkfantasy

If you think it is starting slow, keep going. This is an interesting time to be reading it, during a pandemic with effects of climate change increasing.. “I didn‘t expect to live through a Season” (I too am tired of living through historical events) Jemisin‘s world building is unparalleled, and one of the few times I‘ve read a book with multiple narratives that I haven‘t wanted to skip a particular characters chapters. Amazing.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️This book was incredibly well done & incredibly dark.
Jemisin crafted a world that is so unique & strong and characters that are believable & real, and honestly the whole time I read the main word I kept thinking was INTENTIONAL.
Everything she put in place had a reason. The almost conversational writing style paired with the grit of the plot and the detached but somehow also felt and strong emotions and everything else. I‘m in awe.
