As usual, lots of implausible things happen to Nancy and friends, but this time involving the Kennedy Space Center, which is an interesting aspect. The plot's a mess, but the book was still fun to read.

The original 1942 version was so much better than the 1970s rewrite, aside from the racism. I am so glad I tracked down a copy. The writing itself was better, and while there was plenty of danger and coincidence, it was much less ridiculous. It was also a bit darker. Nancy, her chums, and her dad all face serious danger. Also, I don‘t recall Bess being called plump even once, and George is the one mocked for her appetite! #NancyDrewBR ⬇️
Got a bit behind on the #NancyDrewBR but all caught up now. This one was just a smidge over the top with exploding oranges and a wild leopard. 😆 It was very disjointed. The 1941 version sounds intriguing. As a Floridian it was a fun but ridiculous ride! 3⭐️

The “new” version set in Florida was such a mess that I had to hunt down the original. It arrived today and why did no one tell me the originals had end papers?!?!? #nancydrewbr

3✨ I thought this was pretty interesting that Nancy was helping to solve coded messages. She has close encounters with dangerous wild animals, and tear gas. Then her boyfriend‘s mom is trying to convince her to talk to her dad about buying the house next door to them. 🤣 #NancyDrewBR @Librarybelle
#NancyDrewBR @Librarybelle
A car accident that goes nowhere. Exploding oranges meant to be planted “in strategic spots“ at the Kennedy Space Center. 😳 Horrible house hosts at an orange grove farm. A tour-travelogue-like press release of the space center and museum. Tear gas in Nancy and her friend's faces at a photo-op. Ned & Nancy almost drowning in a vat of boiling water. Way. Too. Much. Going. On. And too over-the-top for me. On to book 19!
Well, this one was definitely over the top again. Someone brings orange bombs (🍊💥🍊💥) to NASA space station and Nancy has to find out who tries to frame her father‘s friend for it. Yeah, sure, orange bombs. And then there is the mansion with a panther and it‘s covered in moss. 🤦♀️

@Read4Life
Didn't know how else to show this: I finished one book this week, but it definitely wasn't a favorite ... so there ya go! 🤣❌🤣
I enjoyed reading the revised series when I was in elementary school. I did not come even close to reading them all, but enough to have a genuine love for Nancy and her friends. Reading these with the #NancyDrewBR is really fun, but if you just want to read the “good” mysteries skip this one. It was choppy, and needed some more editing imo.
My favorite line from this caper -
George: Bess, you‘re the heroine of the occasion!
It‘s time for our discussion, #LittenDetectives ! I have 6 questions as spoilers posted. You can find them on my feed, the book‘s feed, or by searching #NancyDrewBR . This one was a bit of a hot mess in my opinion, but I just love reading these with you!!
I‘ll post the official graphic for next month‘s book, The Quest for the Missing Map, tomorrow. Not many variations between the editions this time!
6. Circling back to the adventures in the books...adult critics for the 1971 edition indicate Nancy's near-death experience in the pool as atypical of the stories. Some of you have also commented on the James Bond-esque escapades of Nancy. I did not read this one as a kid, so I'm not sure if I would have been awed or petrified (like Bess) at what Nancy experiences. Any thoughts? A favorite adventure in the book to share? #NancyDrewBR
5. I don't know about you, but I found the supporting characters in the 1971 edition to be mostly rude. They just seem more abrasive than others from the prior books, including the culprits! I'd love to hear your take on the side characters in whichever edition you read! #NancyDrewBR
4. To continue with the 1971 edition, I wanted to highlight a couple of elements. Remember, the Space Age was shining bright at the time of the revision, so it seemed Adams really wanted Nancy to take part. We get a brief tour of the then Kennedy Space Center. Link in comments to the official site.
I also learned about orange varieties! Link to a 2013 article about orange varieties in comments. #NancyDrewBR
3. The 1971 edition. I'm still hung up on the whole “exploding oranges“ thing--who knew?!? Harriet Stratemeyer Adams, who worked on previous revisions (and, according to Wikipedia, claimed she wrote the first 28 Nancy Drew stories--she didn't), revised the outline and the story for this. There was a lot going on, and adult critics often cite the “strange elements“ in their discussions. What about you? Agree? #NancyDrewBR
2. Let's talk about the 1941 edition first! I did not read it, though given the very detailed synopsis on Wikipedia (link in comments), it sounds more enjoyable to me than the 1971 edition! This is the last book to be outlined by Edna Squier, and it was written by our friend Marion Benson. I'd love to hear what those who read this version thought of the murder, gypsies, plane crash, and forest fire! #NancyDrewBR
1. Depending upon the edition you read this month, you may have helped Nancy track down a missing heiress and uncover the clues to the sounds in a mansion (1941) or help Nancy determine who sent explosive oranges to the Kennedy Space Center (1971). We'll explore each version in the next two questions. But first, which edition did you read? Any overall thoughts to share about the version you read? #NancyDrewBR
This is going to be either an exciting or over the top one. We‘ll see. 🧐🧐🧐
I get why most of the #NancyDrewBR found this a bit (ok a lot 😂) OOT but I'm pretty sure 10 year old me was delighted by the nonstop adventure. I didn't remember much of the story so I don't think I read this multiple times but I did recall Nancy driving the boat and I have a clear memory of being impressed by that as a kid because I had never seen a girl doing that. Now, as a Colorado kid, I wasn't spending a ton of time
#Read2025 #SeriesLove2025
Finished last Sunday for #NancyDrewBR but still digesting those exploding oranges! 🍊💥🙄 This one was just a bit over the top in the villains & their evil plans (soft spoilers): we had exploding oranges, a mansion with a secret laser “beamer” in a lab to shoot down a NASA rocket, wild animals to keep people away & a steaming swimming pool full of boiling water because you should always have “a special (spa?) treatment⬇️
I feel like this would have been better titled as “The NASA Caper” or “The Mystery of the Exploding Oranges” for the revised edition. The moss—covered mansion portion was rather contrived. I was very offended when someone questioned Nancy‘s ability of helping, as she‘s a girl. 🙄
Not the greatest, in my opinion. Discussion on Tuesday!
That was…a lot. Not the worst of the series, IMO, but definitely jam-packed with not-goodness. 😂 I really wish I could have read the original 1940s plot, because the whole exploding oranges at Kennedy Space Center was just unbearable to this former Central Floridian . We get all of the Drew friends and family for this one, plus the Nickersons have a vacation home near the Cape with a neighboring one for sale for Nancy! Neat! 🙄
Just bad. Someone tried to deliver explosive oranges to NASA and for some reason it‘s up to Nancy and gang to figure out who. They are FURIOUS that the caretakers of the place where they‘re staying aren‘t making their dinner and what if the mystery gets in the way of the house party or the property that Mr Drew is going to buy Nancy on a whim? I don‘t know if this book was sponsored by Florida tourism or what, but it was not the best. #NancyDrewBR
Fell asleep reading this last night and had the weirdest dreams. Do not recommend.
#WeeklyForecast
I‘m officially on Easter break and is not returning to work until Tuesday 22nd and my main goal is to read
I want to continue with the yearlong reads
I want to continue with the buddy reads: Eloquent Rage #SheSaid and Heartstone #ShardlakeBR
I want to finish There‘s a Monster behind the Door, What to Wild See Can Be and Betongblomst
I want to read the tagged, and start The Peepshow and Please Do Not Touch This Exhibit
#NancyDrewBR @Librarybelle
I changed my mind. I ended up kind of liking this. Maybe not my favorite, but not as annoying as some I‘ve read. The two mysteries actually ended up being connected so having multiple cases didn‘t bother me.
I hope someone read the earlier version. I want to know how they compare and if the bits about pirates and devastating hurricanes in my version were really just from the original.
Please just stick to one, Nancy.

Not sure if it‘s me or the book but I don‘t feel that into the Space Center. Even the exploding oranges leave me meh. At least I have a snuggle buddy. #catsoflitsy

My mood is a little tired & I am headed out early tomorrow for Hilo—doing an overnight for meetings. It will be a busy week.😵💫
#LittenDetectives : We are two weeks away from our next #NancyDrewBR discussion! Will Nancy be able to solve the mystery of the moss-covered mansion? What talent will we learn she possesses this time? Discussion on the 15th!
#nancydrewbr time! The pages of this one feel different than usual. They are very shiny! There are Chinese letters on the copyright page, although it does say it was printed in 1971.
The April #NancyDrewBR book takes us to a moss-covered mansion (who knew?!?). The versions vary—the 1971 version starts with explosive oranges!
Discussion takes place on April 15th. All are welcome to join. Please let me know if you wish to added or removed from the tag list!
I scored some new books for my #nancydrewbr collection! If you‘re ever in Savannah, be sure to check out Books on Bay. It‘s my favorite bookstore to visit when I‘m here!

This is one of my favorite Nancy Drew books so far! It was fast-paced and interesting 😊 This will definitely be a comfort read series I go back to again and again.
8th read for #SeriesRead2022 📚 @TheSpineView Thanks for hosting this challenge! It's been a great motivator to read series that have been waiting on my shelves for a very long time 😂

Bombs in oranges, wild animals, spies and mystery. What more could a girl want?
After all the long intense books I've been reading lately I decided I needed something quick and simple to break it up. Nancy Drew never fails. 😁
The girls had not gone far before they realized this was a real jungle. Going barelegged and bare-foot did not seem safe, so the three friends put their shoes back on and rolled down their slacks. #QuotsyFeb19 #naked #nancydrew
I haven‘t forgotten Nancy Drew - These are my latest forays into the series - So much to read, so little time!
These three installments were tough to get into and I felt the most dated so far. The cover art on 16 though…😳
