#HaikuADay #HaikuHive

This week has been a week & I‘m behind on haikus. I wrote this one last night inspired by Silent Book Club. I missed December‘s meeting due to work events so it was nice to be back, although the early bird small talk was an effort!😉

The tagged book is the book I brought (along with my Kindle for after dark) reading it for #AuldLangSpine #AuthorAMonth

JenlovesJT47 Small talk is my nemesis! ♥️♥️♥️ 21h

DebinHawaii @TheBookHippie @dabbe @BiblioLitten @JenlovesJT47 Right?! We covered what we were reading, the weather, post holiday back-to-work blues, the weather some more, NYE fireworks (big topic in Hawaii) & by the time to start “the silence” I was exhausted! 😉😆🫢😳 19h
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I would need a nap. 19h
CatLass007 I don‘t like small talk but I enjoy a good conversation. I don‘t like meeting new people because that‘s often what we‘re stuck with, small talk. But every once in a while you meet someone and you just click. 19h
DebinHawaii @CatLass007 Same! I was disappointed last night that the person I have clicked with at SBC didn‘t make it last night. I would have not been exhausted chatting with her. 16h
CatLass007 I‘m sorry she didn‘t make it last night. Does your SBC meet once a month? That‘s a long time to have to wait to reconnect. 16h
DebinHawaii @CatLass007 This location which is close to me is monthly. They do other events at other locations & I may decide to do one of those this month if I can. 16h
CatLass007 Sounds good! 16h

To keep this book related I tagged my current read, which is for both #AuthorAMonth and #AuldLangSpine.

But really just look at these amazing portraits of my furkids! Aren‘t they perfect? Link to the artist, she‘s local to me and just such a wonderful artist and person!

Very loosely linked to “Snow White,“ but I was reminded more of the show “House.“ Anja is a problem solver more than a healer, awkward and blunt, but deeply committed to saving people with her knowledge of poisons and antidotes. When she's asked to discover what's ailing the King's daughter, she discover a bizarre, often horrifying world far beyond her rational, scientific knowledge.

cont.

willaful It took me awhile to really get into this but started to get more interesting when it was no longer Anja on her own, but other people involved in her quest. There's a low-key romance, which I always enjoy, and some great secondary characters, including a superb Cat of Much Catness. Not my favorite Kingfisher, but good.

ChasingOm What‘s your favorite Kingfisher? I‘ve only read the tagged but now I want more, hah. 2d
willaful @ChasingOm let's see, I loved the two Clocktaur War books, Thornhedge, and Nettle and Bone. A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking is very fun. And a Sorceress Comes to Call was right up there! 2d

Setting up my January reading list for #BookSpinBingo maybe this will be a more successful year for Bingo‘s. 😅

I had six five-star reads in May 2025, so it was hard to pick the top one. Definitely honourable mentions to Sylvie Cathrall's A Letter from the Lonesome Shore and Sau Fong Chan's Chinese Dress in Detail! But Hemlock & Silver was a lot of fun, very characteristically a Kingfisher book with a really fascinating interpretation/retelling of the Snow White story.

#12BooksOf2025 @TheEllieMo

BookmarkTavern I am so looking forward to this one! 2w
shanaqui @BookmarkTavern It was really fun! The Snow White retelling definitely went places I did not expect. 2w
willaful Looking forward to reading this this month for #fairytalereadingchallenge 2w
TheEllieMo Hosting the #12BooksOf2025 event is introducing me to so many books and genres that I didn‘t know existed, or that I needed in my life! This looks so interesting. According to the blurb I‘ve just read, there‘s a “narcissistic cat” involved…. so, a normal cat, then 😹 2w
shanaqui @TheEllieMo A normal cat except he talks! 😁 2w

Pickpick

Loved it, as expected. A delightful Snow White rewrite where Snow is an ancillary character to an adult lady poison expert. Light romance, creepy mirror world, on-its-head fairytale retelling? Yes, please. And I stand by my comp to Robin McKinley for this book, too.

Karisa Oooh, so glad it‘s good. I‘m reading it next month for #AuthorAMonth (Libby willing) 😊 3w

Loving the new T. Kingfisher! It‘s giving me McKinley vibes but with a creepy sheen - maybe it‘s the desert setting making me think of Damar? Her inner dialogue writing of the reluctant hero is similar too.

willaful That sounds promising! Gonna read it next month for #AuthorAMonth 3w
Larkken @willaful good idea! When the hold came in though I guess I couldn‘t wait haha 3w

I‘m really excited about my #AuldLangSpine list from @julesG ! There was just one book I had already read & loved (AWGTMI ⭐️) & a few on my TBR but several new to me titles, which I always love!

Pictured are are the first 6 I‘m starting with, beginning with the tagged book I was already planning on reading in January for #AuthorAMonth & I Know How This Ends because I loved Cassandra in Reverse.

Mahalo @monalyisha for another great match!

julesG I see you've had a tough time picking titles for your list too. It is difficult, first to limit it, second to pick something not everyone has read already, third keep availability in mind. 1mo
julesG You've picked six good titles to start with. 🎉🎉 1mo
DebinHawaii @julesG Yes & I also rule out series unless it‘s book one & some that I think are too niche or extreme. (And I‘m a Libra with decision-making issues, so there‘s that…) 😂 1mo
DebinHawaii @julesG Excellent! I will probably get to the first 2 in January & read the others throughout the year. 1mo
