An Assembly Such as This
An Assembly Such as This: A Novel of Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman | Pamela Aidan
15 posts | 33 read | 24 to read
"She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me." So begins the timeless romance of Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice. Jane Austen's classic novel is beloved by millions, but little is revealed in the book about the mysterious and handsome hero, Mr. Darcy. And so the question has long remained: Who is Fitzwilliam Darcy? In An Assembly Such as This, Pamela Aidan finally answers that long-standing question. In this first book of her Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman trilogy, she reintroduces us to Darcy during his visit to Hertfordshire with his friend Charles Bingley and reveals Darcy's hidden perspective on the events of Pride and Prejudice. As Darcy spends more time at Netherfield supervising Bingley and fending off Miss Bingley's persistent advances, his unwilling attraction to Elizabeth grows -- as does his concern about her relationship with his nemesis, George Wickham. Setting the story vividly against the colorful historical and political background of the Regency, Aidan writes in a style comfortably at home with Austen but with a wit and humor very much her own. Aidan adds her own cast of fascinating characters to those in Austen's original, weaving a rich tapestry from Darcy's past and present. Austen fans and newcomers alike will love this new chapter of the most famous romance of all time.

I discovered this series on Kindle unlimited. It's Pride and Prejudice written from Darcy's point of view. I thought it was really well done. I liked the insights into his perspective. This is a trilogy in all and this first one ends after he convinces Bingley to leave Netherfield for London. I'm looking forward to reading the rest.

MaureenMc I really enjoyed this series! 😊 2y

I know I enjoyed this Pride and Prejudice retelling when I first read it 20 years ago, but I didn‘t care for the audiobook reread much. The narrator is annoying and I had forgotten the whole specialty cravat tying subplot, which is, quite frankly, ridiculous. An easy read, but mostly fluff and nonsense, and really easy to tune out while listening. I doubt I‘ll reread the rest of the trilogy. I recommend reading the original instead.

humouress

Taking a break from ‘Lyman‘ for this. Just starting out, with the first assembly at Meryton; the writing is better than I was expecting. Of course, some is taken directly from P&P but generally (so far) seems to stick to the spirit of the original. Except for some grammar (which then sticks out like a sore thumb in this quintessentially English story, unfortunately) such as ‘looked out the window‘ instead of ‘looked out OF the window‘

💖💖💖💓🤍

humouress 2/3 of the way through. The language is not bad, though closer to Heyer than Austen and (towards the end) a dose of PG Wodehouse. Descriptions of clothes and large quantities of food & drink appear; I do appreciate the addition of ‘Nelson‘ and ‘Trafalgar‘, supposedly Darcy‘s favourite horse and hound. (edited) 3y

There are SO MANY P&P continuations/sequels/variations/fanfic... I‘ve listed just a few here— feel free to add more in comments, discuss what you want to read, etc.

The tagged book, Longbourn, Darcy‘s Temptation, and Jacobson‘s Bennet Wardrobe series have long been on my list

Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife looks smutty.😳

Pride & Prometheus could work for spooky October reading.

I LOVED Clergyman‘s Wife & The Other Bennet Sister.

KristiAhlers I literally just bought Mr Darcy Takes a Wife. ❤️ 4y

Bookwormjillk I really liked Longbourn and The Other Bennet Sister. Will probably re-read Bridget Jones Diary. 4y
HOTPock3tt I read the clergymans wife... looking forward to the other Bennet sister!! 4y
HOTPock3tt Btw, mr Darcy takes a wife IS smutty! 😁 In a good way! I didn‘t finish it but I had fun with the chapters I did read 🤣 @sprainedbrain the issue is the really flowery narration and the weird plot (after the smut takes place...) and I just kind of bailed. But I own a copy, so I may pick it back up for pemberlittens 🤔 (edited) 4y
melissajayne The Other Bennet Sister is really good, as is Longbourne. 4y
meghathecloud There are just so many P&P related books! I'll be reading Longbourn this October 4y

JeffyRoo The other Bennet sister is good. Darcy takes a wife is indeed smutty but also good, it's a series though can be read alone. The Clergyman's wife was excellent. 4y

Sace Well apparently Offspring had a copy of An Assembly Such As This and left that here too. Wow, she's been really helpful with my decision making. 😊 4y
Librarybelle Longbourne is so good! I actually did not mind Death Comes to Pemberley, though I know that has received mixed reviews. Clergyman‘s Daughter and The Other Bennet Sister is still on my to read list. I‘d happily reread, or read, anything. 4y
Susanita I loved Death Comes to Pemberly 4y
mollyrotondo I am going to look into all of these selections, but I am definitely going to do a reread of the tagged book. It is a fantasy and I remember it being a lot of fun. I‘ll see how I feel after a reread 4y
Clare-Dragonfly I have The Other Bennet Sister on hold, but I don‘t know if it will arrive in time! I liked Longbourn. 4y
Lcsmcat I read Death Comes to Pemberley years ago. It‘s good. (edited) 4y

CrowCAH From this grouping, I vote for 4y
TheAromaofBooks I'm always up for P&P variations! I'm in the minority - I hated Longbourn - so pretentious - but am up for trying almost any one that the group chooses!! 4y
MaureenMc I‘ll be reading The Clergyman‘s Wife (sitting on my library table already 😆). The tagged Aidan series is awesome. We read the first one in my book club and all of us enjoyed it. 4y

janeycanuck I recently picked up a copy of Mary B by Katherine Chen - sounds similar to The Other Miss Bennet so I‘ll prolly confuse the heck outta myself but I‘m going to pick it up in October. 4y
Librarybelle @janeycanuck Sounds good! 😁 4y

@TheAromaofBooks I'm with you, I didn't like Longbourn either! The war sections were soooooooooooo long and boring. @sprainedbrain I'm up for any buddy reads if I haven't read the book before! Sorry for this late response, I'm way behind on Litsy.
4y
TheAromaofBooks @ferskner - Right?? And it just felt like the author was trying too hard to make sure the reader understood that life is REAL with the servants. We talk about PISS and SHIT at every opportunity because we deal with REAL LIFE! 🙄 4y
sprainedbrain @TheAromaofBooks @ferskner are you ladies saying you DON‘T talk about piss and shit all the time? 😂🤣 4y

#Satisfied, he settled back into the squabs, pulling his evening cloak and the carriage rug closer. The ride to Melbourne House would be of no moment, he thought as he waited in the deep shadows of a cold late autumn's evening; but the wait for the long lines of carriages attempting to discharge their passengers and then the receiving line within could take up well over an hour, maybe two. Not that he was anxious to arrive at his destination.

I had heard Pamela Aidan's series described as "high-quality Pride and Prejudice fanfiction" several times, but only now got to it. It was a entertaining read showing Darcy's POV. This was first in a trilogy so it only goes through Darcy leaving Netherfield after Bingley's ball. It was fun while reading, but I didn't find it particularly memorable. My work only has this first book and I'm not motivated enough to seek out the other 2 elsewhere.

DGRachel I enjoyed them - not high literature by any means, but fun and entertaining. 7y
emilyesears @DGRachel They‘re certainly better than a lot of P&P published fanfic. 6y
DGRachel I agree wholeheartedly! 6y

I have read a LOT of Jane Austen spin-offs and sequels. This trilogy by Pamela Aidan is by far the best. Each book tackles a different part in Pride and Prejudice and tells the story from Darcy's perspective. #recommendsday

The specifics of my #bookstore sale #bookhaul. All this for $26 ❤️ Also, if you love Pride and Prejudice read this book! It is the story from Darcy's POV ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Amazing! I love the character this author flushes out and adds. While the second #book in the series veers a little the 3rd book makes up for it more than you could imagine 💙
