Britt-Marie Was Here
Britt-Marie Was Here | Fredrik Backman
For as long as anyone can remember, Britt-Marie has been an acquired taste. It's not that she's judgemental, or fussy, or difficult - she just expects things to be done in a certain way. A cutlery drawer should be arranged in the right order, for example (knives, forks, then spoons). We're not animals, are we? But behind the passive-aggressive, socially awkward, absurdly pedantic busybody is a woman who has more imagination, bigger dreams and a warmer heart than anyone around her realizes. So when Britt-Marie finds herself unemployed, separated from her husband of 20 years, left to fend for herself in the miserable provincial backwater that is Borg - of which the kindest thing one can say is that it has a road going through it - and somehow tasked with running the local football team, she is a little unprepared. But she will learn that life may have more to offer her that she's ever realised, and love might be found in the most unexpected of places. The number 1 European bestseller by the author of A Man Called Ove, Britt-Marie was Here is a funny, poignant and uplifting tale of love, community, and second chances.

I understand why Backman is a hot commodity.

I liked the story, but I'm not sure I'll pick up another book by him.

Thanks for the recommendation @Cinfhen

Cinfhen Awwww, too bad it wasn‘t a total hit for you! Im not sure this was my favorite Backman but I think it‘s pretty true to how he writes 2w
julesG @Cinfhen I often struggle with Scandinavian writers. Not sure why. 2w
ljuliel This was the only one of his I could get through. I don‘t think I understand their humor , if that‘s what it‘s supposed to be. 2w
See All 7 Comments
julesG @ljuliel It's not the humour that I struggle with. I can't grasp what exactly my problem with Scandinavian writers is. I've tried so many different genres and authors. 2w
ljuliel Yea, I get what you mean. I think these would all originate from the same general area : the Hendrik Groen books, The Backman books, the Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window ( and whatever the heck he did) , the Steig Larsson books. I don‘t get them. I‘ve started the blasted Ove book a dozen times. Don‘t find it funny, entertaining...just as boring as a cup of warm water. 2w
KateFulfordAuthor Interesting review & comments - thanks 2w
julesG @KateFulfordAuthor It's a very brief review and actually doesn't say anything about the book. Sorry. The writing was good. The characters were well-composed. But as much as I like Scandinavia and its people, I struggle with Nordic literature of any kind (no, not true, still love Astrid Lindgren). 2w

After reading My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She‘s Sorry, I decided to give Britt-Marie a go. I enjoyed getting to see Britt-Marie on her own and trying to find her new place in the world following her leaving Kent. I love that she ends up being a youth soccer coach, despite not knowing the game. I found Britt-Marie to be a more like able character in this book than the previous one. #AuthorAMonth #AuthorAMonth2020

Re-read this for #AuthorAMonth. It helped that I was re-introduced to her in My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She‘s Sorry. Britt Marie has left her cheating husband and gotten a job as a children‘s succeed coach. She‘s a nagging, sometimes irritating, often inspiring, character, in the vein of Ove. Backman makes his protagonists believable and maddeningly lovable with their histories.

I started reading this for #authoramonth challenge and discovered the movie on Netflix one day. After watching the movie, I was conflicted about finishing the book. Inevitably I have to compare this book to Ove, a very favorite of mine, because Backman creates another quirky character in her current situation as the result of her relationship with her spouse, learning to live a new life because of her quirky neighbors. Wait, is it the same book? Mighty close, because it engenders almost the same level of love. I laughed out loud but not as often, it took longer to get into it, ⬇️

Texreader and the ending wasn‘t as satisfying as I‘d like. I‘m a soccer fan, so I love the role it plays in this book, and it creates the funniest moments. Highly recommended if you loved or or even just liked Ove. (edited) 4w

I was at first disappointed thinking I hit upon a Backman that I didn‘t love because, y‘all, 63 is not as old as Britt-Marie is portrayed! But it wasn‘t long before her impact on Borg and its characters took hold of me. Britt-Marie, with her bicarbonate soda, can knock on my door any day. It was also a hoot to read the American publication while listening to the Queen‘s English audiobook!

Britt-Marie is socially awkward and she can be annoying as she hates a mess. She has a great imagination, big dreams and a warm heart. Backman's characters are very rich. People call Britt-Marie a ‘nag-bag‘. She‘s certainly strange & I did not warm up to her immediately. Her past is slowly revealed (why she has a fixation for cleaning is also explained) as she came to a town with not much hope & pride left except for a group of young soccer players. I‘m not a big fan of Backman‘s writing style here but I liked his take on criticising some real issues👇

Britt-Marie is annoying and clueless. She‘s one of those people who makes you want to bang your head against a wall. Then she‘s thrown into a poverty stricken town that lives for football. She adapts and becomes a quirky yet nurturing woman and while I never really root for her, I do want the people around her to do well. And that is why I kept reading and enjoyed the story.

Picked up 2 of the Fredrik Backman books I haven‘t read at the library tonight ready for January‘s #AuthoraMonth, when Fredrik Backman will be featured. Loved A Man Called Ove, Beartown and Us Against You.

Looking forward to joining this challenge in 2020 and shooting for 24 books over the year.

Why not join us?

Andrew65 @umbrellagirl I‘ve heard good things about this one and looking forward to it. 2mo

I've been looking forward to reading this for ages and I have no idea why its sat on my TBR since 2017. Now felt like the time to reading it so it was a real shame that I felt like I'd read this before.

These four books have been on my nightstand for too long. I‘m going to try to finish them before the end of the year. Reading Britt-Marie today - I set it down so long ago that I don‘t even remember where I left off!

Tamra I really enjoyed Penelopiad. 3mo
SheilaChew @Tamra I‘ll read that next! Thanks for the recommendation! 3mo

#GratefulReads I enjoyed Britt-Marie so much that it was a #ReadInOneSitting book!
@Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @OriginalCyn620

Bookishthoughts I've enjoyed Backman, still have to read this one. 3mo
Kaila-ann I‘m with @Bookishthoughts - I have this one on my shelf but haven‘t gotten to it yet. 3mo
marywag08 Have you read My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She‘s Sorry? It‘s the prequel to this one. I immediately picked up Britt Marie was Here after reading that one. 3mo

CoffeeNBooks @marywag08 I have that one on my bookshelf, but haven't read it yet. I didn't realize I'd read them out of order. Oops! 😂 3mo
marywag08 @CoffeeNBooks No worries! The first one will explain the whole situation with Ken and give you a new perspective on several areas of Britt-Marie‘s life. They are both excellent! I think I liked Britt-Marie was Here the most out of the two. 3mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @CoffeeNBooks I didn‘t either!! 3mo

Day 6 - #BookGiftedToMe #GratefulReads

@ljuliel sent me this book as I had 2 copies of Whitethorn Woods and we were doing a group read so I posted about a free copy and Julie won the book. I was so surprised to receive this book in return and I look forward to reading it very soon. Thanks again, Julie!

ljuliel You‘re welcome Eadie. It took me a few starts to get into this one, but once I did, it was very good. I‘ve also found that with his others. There seems to be a hump I need to get past to keep on reading. Britt is quite a character. 💕 4mo
EadieB @ljuliel I agree but when you have already read a few of his other books, you keep on reading because you know in the end you will find the book to be a real treat! 4mo

Happy Halloween 🎃!

1) I THINK it is Britt-Marie is here, but I should also really start reading Night House and How to be both

2) A Man Called Ove. It deserved a reread only one month after my first read.

3) 6!

4) Night House of How to be both OR my newly arrived books Blind Assassin and Instructions for a Heatwave (not at all fitting for the season).

Thanks so much for sending me this book. I haven‘t read it yet but I do look forward to reading it. Hope you enjoy Whitethorn Woods and look forward to discussing it with you and the others in the group!

ljuliel I‘m glad it arrived early. I‘ll be starting the Binchy book soon. I think it starts this weekend ? I kept the note about it. Will check the dates. Hope you like Britt Marie as much as I did. (edited) 4mo
Andrew65 This is one I want to read. Really enjoyed the three of his I have read so far. 4mo

Andrew65 @ljuliel I loved Ove ❤️, very different but I also really enjoyed Beartown and UsAgainst You once I got into Beartown. 4mo
ljuliel I‘ve started Ove several times and it just hasn‘t STUCK yet.... I‘ll keep trying though. I think I‘ll like it once I get over that hump. @andrew65 4mo
Andrew65 @ljuliel That was the same for me with Beartown, I had to get over that hump, then it was good. 4mo

I absolutely loved the first two thirds of this book! The last third got pretty scattered to me, but I overall still really liked the book. It definitely made me cry multiple times! The characters were great.

Readswithcoffee I love all of Fredrik Backman‘s books. 4mo

I loved this book. And I realize what I love Backman books: It is one of human hope and the ability to change direction and have meaningful moments no matter your age or circumstance. To find out what importance you may have in the small, ordinary mundane moments of life. That. Is Britt-Marie. And I hope. Me.

I think it wrapped up quite nicely but the story line just didn't make sense. I still didn't quite understand how the ending happened but I guess it was ok. I don't recommend this one. It was closely a 3/5⭐ read for me.

Oh wow. This book packs some punch. When Britt-Marie leaves her husband, due to his wandering affections toward another woman, she finds herself alone and without all of the things that keep her grounded and safe. No more balcony. No more well organised cutlery draw. No more being a passenger in the car. So she takes a temporary job in Borg. And from there, magic springs! A bold story of how one person can make a massive difference. Loved it.

Buechersuechtling Thanks a lot for this review. Do you do it, I may give this author another try – even if I decided long time before (after “Ove”) to not read any more of his books. Hopefully I find it in my library‘s stock. 6mo
