The Obelisk Gate
The Obelisk Gate: The Broken Stone | N. K. Jemisin
THIS IS THE WAY THE WORLD ENDS... FOR THE LAST TIME. The season of endings grows darker as civilization fades into the long cold night. Alabaster Tenring -- madman, world-crusher, savior -- has returned with a mission: to train his successor, and thus seal the fate of the Stillness forever. It continues with a lost daughter, found by the enemy. It continues with the obelisks, and an ancient mystery converging on answers at last. You are the wall which stands against the flow of tradition, the spark of hope long buried under the thickening ashfall. And you will not be broken.

Amazing sequel to the fifth season. I have yet to be certain about ulterior motives of the characters, but the worldbuilding is fascinating. It's also refreshing to read a fantasy novel that isn't quite white centered as many of them can be. I am super excited to read the final book to see what happens!

Thanks for the tag @wanderinglynn these are my 6 choices for #Top6Reads Most of the books I've read this year have been 3 star reads but these are my 4 star reads 😸
@Cinfhen

wanderinglynn Looks like some interesting selections that I haven‘t read. I think my TBR will be getting slightly bigger. 😉😂 3mo
marleed What is your criteria for stars? I rate from 1 to 5 with 3 = meh. I find that most of my reads fall to the left or right of 4 = I like and would love to discuss. 3mo

BookwormAHN @marleed My 1 to 5 is: 1= terrible, I don't know why I bothered finishing it, 2= bad, 3= enjoyable but okay, most books, 4= great, I thoroughly enjoyed it, 5= incredible, one of the best books ever. I feel like I read a lot of 3s. 3mo
marleed @BookwormAHN Oh interesting, we are close in rating except my 4s are a good rather than a great. 3mo
readordierachel Heck yeah, The Obelisk Gate! 👍🏼 3mo
Cinfhen I‘m usually stingy with 5 stars but lately I‘ve been more generous. But for me 3 means good, 4 means I would recommend the book! Most books are usually 3. They are good but if u skip it no great loss. @marleed @BookwormAHN great list!!! 3mo

This is the second book in The Broken Earth trilogy. It was fantastic. In this book the focus on survival is still the main priority but also the purpose of the obelisks come into play.

Cheers to escaping in the afternoon for a quiet tea and a good book. I read the first part of Jemisin's trilogy in January thanks to #NewYearWhoDis and @MeganAnn and this second book picks up with the same drive the first book ended with. No slowing down to awkwardly recap, just driving forward with the story👍

riversong153 I read this Trilogy and it was awesome! I read the first installment in January too! Happy Reading!! 5mo
TheKidUpstairs @riversong153 thanks! Her world building is incredible. I found the style a bit difficult to get used to in the first book (mainly the sections using second person), but the writing is just so good that it didn't take long to get hooked. 5mo

Solid second in this trilogy. A little draggy, as the middle book of a trilogy can be, but I loved the development of our main character and some really interesting side characters too. It's all starting to interweave together and I can't wait to see how the final book ties all the pieces together. #Booked2019 A Cli-Fi

I love learning new words!

JanuarieTimewalker13 That‘s funny, had I seen that word in a book, I would think it would be closely related to apocalyptic. (edited) 7mo

JanuarieTimewalker13 @Bklover I neglected to look at second meaning...maybe that is similar to apocalyptic? 7mo

hermyknee @JanuarieTimewalker13 @Bklover the Apocrypha generally refers to non-canonical texts (especially in the Bible) whose origins or authorship are doubtful. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, “Both "apocrypha" and "apocryphal" derive via Latin from the Greek verb apokryptein, meaning "to hide away," from "kryptein" ("to hide").” 7mo

What a thrill to read masterfully woven fantasy with compelling characters. I sometimes didn‘t understand character motivations, but I also trust Jemisin has her reasons — or I missed something in my fevered first listen. I was on the fence about whether to keep going with this series. While I'm interested in finding out what happens, I am still really struggling with the writing style. After the 1st, I wasn't clear on what about it didn't work for me. After finishing book 2, I think I can say it's the frequent fragments of thought that pop up throughout the narrative. They seem incomplete and tend to frustrate me for that reason. I will finish the series anyways.

Important...why you need to get a supporting membership to Hugo Awards to ensure that SFF noms/winners continue to include diverse authors! Costs about $45. I‘m joining this week.

https://bookriot.com/2019/01/29/vote-in-the-2019-hugo-awards

In short, a white supremist group organized votes in attempt to keep authors like Jemisin from being nominated/winning. See article:
