A Monster Calls
A Monster Calls | Patrick Ness, Siobhan Dowd
At seven minutes past midnight, thirteen-year-old Conor wakes to find a monster outside his bedroom window. But it isn't the monster Conor's been expecting-- he's been expecting the one from his nightmare, the nightmare he's had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments. The monster in his backyard is different. It's ancient. And wild. And it wants something from Conor. Something terrible and dangerous. It wants the truth. From the final idea of award-winning author Siobhan Dowd-- whose premature death from cancer prevented her from writing it herself-- Patrick Ness has spun a haunting and darkly funny novel of mischief, loss, and monsters both real and imagined.

Have you ever read a certain author for the very first time and fallen so madly in love with the book that you‘re afraid to read anything else by that author because it might not measure up?

A Monster Calls is the only thing I‘ve read by Patrick Ness. I love it so much. I‘ve put off reading his other books but I‘m ready to take the plunge! Continued⬇️

Butterflyamore I have More Than This on my list for September and The Ocean Was Our Sky marked down for October. I‘m not sure when I‘ll read The Crane Wife just yet and I also want to get my hands on his Chaos Walking series! 1w
TheAromaofBooks The same thing happened to me when I read A Monster Calls. That book absolutely slayed me. I read The Crane Wife next, and it was a book I couldn't completely decide whether I liked or not, but it was definitely magical. I still have several of his books on the TBR stack! 1w
Butterflyamore @TheAromaofBooks I think that‘s why I am especially scared about The Crane Wife. I have seen a lot more negative reviews on that than any of his other books so I think I should save it for last! 1w

I‘m not exactly winning the day.
Depression fog and heaviness kinda took over as soon as I opened my eyes this morning.
That said, I did snag this one off of my Audible wish list for $5 today because of their member sale going on until 8/4.

So there was an individual win in the midst of an overall heavy day.

You‘re welcome and please feel free to tag me in any posts about what you snag to put further smiles on my dial today!

🎧💯👂🏻💯 🙂

Carissa-Green-Reads This book is an ugly-cry inducer. Might want to make sure you‘re ready for that. 3w
Chelseabillups30 I‘ll make sure I‘ve taken my medication and bring the tissues! If it does make me cry (which is terribly difficult to do and a sign of a masterfully written book) hopefully I‘ll be on an upswing after its done and therefore it will have played a therapeutic role in my life! 3w
Butterflyamore Yes, I was going to echo @Carissa-Green-Reads statement! It‘s a fantastic book and I, personally, found it to produce an excellent emotional purge but you definitely do need to be mentally prepared. 3w

Carissa-Green-Reads It‘s full of symbolism and melodrama, and I saw that, but it still wrecked me. 3w
Scochrane26 I‘ve been fighting depression all summer with the loss of a job & boredom. Some days are better than others. A common intervention I use w/ clients is to list 3 good things that happen each day, so I have to do that myself. Hope you are able to be on an upswing soon! 3w
Chelseabillups30 @Scochrane26, thanks for leveling with me & letting me know I‘m not alone! Depression is a bitch, I feel for you. I just wish I could stay focused and engaged enough to follow through on commitments! I guess my three things would be this (obviously), that I got an email from my hockey coaches about practices starting up September 14th (helping me unfuck my brain immensely), even if life feels heavy today the sun shines bright outside today! 3w
Gina I was ugly crying with his one. Very beautiful. 3w

I‘m participating in the slump stacks challenge on Bookstagram!

I haven‘t hit a reading slump in quite some time. Here are some that have pulled me out of previous slumps. I‘ve found reading multiple books at once & being deliberate about DNFing books that I‘m not enjoying helps! When I am feeling especially drained with my reading material, a good psychological thriller helps keep me on track.

What books have gotten you out of previous slumps?

wanderinglynn I go back & reread my faves. For my most recent slump, I reread Darynda Jones‘s Charley Davidson series & Patricia Briggs‘s Mercy Thompson series. 1mo

I love the way Ness credits Dowd for the ideas that became this book, and the brutal honesty and emotions in the plot. I would love to teach this in a YA lit class. The illustrations are also haunting and perfect for the story.

I still have tears in my eyes as I write this review.

A Monster Calls tells the story of a boy named Conor, whose mom is slipping away from her battle with cancer. His eccentric grandmom comes to visit (and we all know why), but Conor is not willing to admit to the truth yet.

Amongst it all, a monster - literally - in his backyard just might help him find his way through a series of stories.

5/5 This book doesn‘t have any lgbt+ representation, though it was written by a gay writer. It also wasn‘t what I expected. Conor‘s Mom is dying from terminal cancer - but he won‘t say it aloud. He can‘t come to terms with it. One day a monster shows up and tells him tales and stories and acts out and encourages Conor to act on his worst fears. I don‘t want to spoil anymore so I‘m going to leave it there. A powerful book and I think if you have kids or are a kid, you would appreciate it that much more. 4/5!
