The Invisible Library
The Invisible Library | Genevieve Cogman
The first in a gripping, adventurous series, The Invisible Library is the astounding debut from Genevieve Cogman. Irene must be at the top of her game or she'll be off the case - permanently. . . Irene is a professional spy for the mysterious Library, which harvests fiction from different realities. And along with her enigmatic assistant Kai, she's posted to an alternative London. Their mission - to retrieve a dangerous book. But when they arrive, it's already been stolen. London's underground factions seem prepared to fight to the very death to find her book. Adding to the jeopardy, this world is chaos-infested - the laws of nature bent to allow supernatural creatures and unpredictable magic. Irene's new assistant is also hiding secrets of his own. Soon, she's up to her eyebrows in a heady mix of danger, clues and secret societies. Yet failure is not an option - the nature of reality itself is at stake. The Invisible Library is followed by the second title in The Invisible Library series, The Masked City.

I was right. I did love this book from beginning to end. The character development, fantasy-esque plot, and all the little details made this book lovable to me. Now I just can‘t wait to read the next in the series!

Quote stated by Irene regarding the school library on the campus of Prince Mordred's Private Academy for Boys: "The atmosphere of the place soothed her automatically; the rich lantern-lights, the sheer scent of paper and leather, and the fact that everywhere she looked, there were books, books, beautiful books"(p.12).

Super fun premise, but execution felt a little wobbly. Don‘t think I‘ll follow up in the series, but it was light and somewhat intriguing.

@MrBook posted earlier about book lights. I love them! I use mine every night almost. One of my favorite ways to read. Reminds mr of when I was in junior high and high school and my parents would get SO mad at me for staying up late to read. 😂 I can only hope my problem with my little guy is up past bedtime book reading. 😉

We are at the tail end of a weeks long road trip from Georgia to Idaho and now heading back to Georgia. While in Idaho my husband and I had our first night away together since our son was born 4 years ago. We of course made it to a bookstore and my sweet man bought me this book as a surprise. I'm really enjoying the bit I've been able to sneak in. ♡

(Since I‘m waiting for book 4 I thought I‘d share some of my favorite quotes from book 1-3. Enjoy!)

Leniverse The first book was a kindle deal yesterday, at £.99 so now it is getting cozy in my SFF folder on my Kindle. It... tends to take years between acquiring a book and actually reading it. But I also hate waiting for books in an ongoing series, and prefer to wait until it is finished and then binge. ? 5mo
QuoteQueen @Leniverse I hate waiting for series too. Thankfully right now I‘m just waiting for a delivery. You got a good deal, but be prepared to buy the rest when you start reading. The kindle has sucked me into so many series with their deals. Lol 5mo
Leniverse Yes, but that's fair enough. Like the first book, buy the rest. Don't like the first book, nothing much lost. It's a bigger problem for me that I end up with so many unread books because I'm a magpie when I see a shiny offer. 😆 5mo

4/5💚s

Loved it so much I just HAD to get the 2nd book. I really enjoy the main character, Irene, and her interactions with others, especially her trainee, Kai. It was a mystery set in fantasy, and part of the mystery is also trying to understand wtf is going on. Lol. I didn‘t mind, it made it fun. Though I felt some stuff could have been fleshed out more as I felt something was missing...but maybe that‘s part of the mystery. 🤔

This was an interesting fantasy. A secret library connected to numerous alternate worlds and librarians who venture forth through danger to collect books. I wish the steampunk London setting had been fleshed out more. Not sure I‘ll continue the series.

I could have used this advice the other day when a salesman came to my door! I had a front row seat to high-pressure sales tactics. It wasn‘t fun. I should have listened to my introvert tendencies and not answered the door! 😰😑

Kaye I despise door to door salesmen, or worse, the JW groupies with their skirts and sweaters , token kid, and their pamphlets about the world ending. I‘ve gotten good at NOT INTERESTED and shutting the door. Don‘t even give them time to start. Nail them. 7mo
Sweetkokoro I never open my front door unless its, someone I know (family, friends), the mail lady, or I‘m expecting someone. Other than that I‘m not home and not opening my door haha. I need to get one of those no soliciting signs and see if that helps. 7mo

I've largely been buried under schoolwork of late but I managed to get around to finishing this. I liked it a lot! It didn't go at all as I'd expected, and while I had some uncertainty about the protagonist initially I was pretty fond of her by the end. Definitely going to look into the rest of the series.

“The Invisible Library” was a fun time-traveling fantasy about librarians collecting rare or important books throughout history and alternate dimensions. It reminded me a lot of Doctor Who! :) I do wish the story had gone a bit deeper, but I have a feeling that will come in later books of the series.

Finished reread in record time. Find myself wondering more about Irene and that charming cat burglar (am I meant to draw the conclusion that Irene is bi?), and who I'd want Irene to choose if there were to be romance. Personally I like it the way it is in this book: the three of them working together. I wouldn't want any romance to spoil that. (But maybe it could enhance it...)

I got my exam results and I completely rocked. A distinction in one and a grade 2 pass in the other -- I've run the numbers and I'll have a first in this degree (biology) to go with my first in lit, as long as I don't mess up my dissertation.

So my library isn't the greatest. About 80% of what I see in other library hauls do not make it to my library. To throw salt in the wound, they have stopped using overdrive/libby. I'm looking at other options.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa It‘s worth it in the long run, especially if you borrow a lot instead of buying. I use the Free Library of Philadelphia and an online subscription to Scribd. 1y
Sace @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I'm trying to borrow more, but it's hard when most of the time my library doesn't have it and I can't keep requesting they buy things. 1y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I have a card for my not-so-great local library. Plus the Free Library of Philadelphia, which offers free cards to PA residents. Do you have a large city in your state with a library that might do the same thing? (I‘m all for free!) Plus, I vote for Scribd too. It‘s been a boon to my audiobook listening. 1y
See All 24 Comments
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @RestlessFickleBookHoarder I‘m the same, my local library is very tiny too. I‘m in PA though, so for me (with proof of residence) the Free Library of Philadelphia is actually a free membership to residents in the state. Make sure you check in your state too, the bigger towns and at any state universities, sometimes they have discounts for residents of that state. (edited) 1y
Sace @BarbaraTheBibliophage unfortunately no, the three larger cities do not offer cards... I don't think... I should check that. Our library recently added Cloud Library (?) so I think I have access to the e-collections of any library in the state that also uses it...but it's not much either. 1y
rubyslippersreads Not listed here, but the Brooklyn, NY and Orange County, FL, libraries are also worth checking into. 1y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I wonder if you could use my address to get a card for free from the Free Lib of Philly?? It would be fine with me! 1y
Sace @BarbaraTheBibliophage that's sweet, but here's my rant... Taxpayers support libraries. People bitch about taxes and "milking the system" so I won't use another address and I've denied my own daughter access to my e account since she is no longer a resident here. Yeah. I'm a weirdo. 1y
Sace @BarbaraTheBibliophage I would feel bad if someone in PA had to wait for something becaise I'm reading it 😂 1y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @RestlessFickleBookHoarder I can respect that. 👍🏻 1y
Sace @BarbaraTheBibliophage thank you. My daughter was not happy about it though 😂 1y
Quirkybookworm What??? Libraries are paid for by tax payers! This is NOT cool!! I‘d like to know why there‘s a fee?? All my life, I never had to pay a fee. Just overdue fees. 1y
Sace @Quirkybookworm they are free if you live in that county or state. So my local library is free. Some libraries let you pay to use their resources. 1y
Sace @Quirkybookworm and like I said, I won't let my daughter use my info because she's not paying taxes for my library. 1y
Quirkybookworm So basically when I visit any of those cities, I might as well purchase a book than checking out a book because it‘s cheaper? That makes total sense! (Sarcastic remark) @RestlessFickleBookHoarder (edited) 1y
Quirkybookworm Not being sarcastic at you, @RestlessFickleBookHoarder 1y
TiredLibrarian @Quirkybookworm Libraries are usually funded by local (city, town, county, school district) taxes. The locals supporting their libraries can (and do) get very upset if people who aren't supporting their libraries have the same privileges as those who do. 1y
TiredLibrarian @RestlessFickleBookHoarder Keep making requests, as long as your library doesn't have a limit. As a librarian I want to know what my readers want! We try to p patron requests as much as possible. Even if an item can't be purchased when you make the request, sometimes circumstances change: another person requests it, gift money comes in. Always let them know what you want - a good library will try to get it! 1y
TiredLibrarian @RestlessFickleBookHoarder Also, your library should offer interloans as another option. For online options, check out the NYPL - you can get a card online to use their electronic resources. 1y
booklover76 I am so grateful for my library. I live in a small town. They gave a great selection to begin with but they are part of an awesome Interlibrary loan system. 1y
Sace @TiredLibrarian unfortunately for interlibrary loan a book has have been in circulation for at least a year at the local level before it is available for interlibrary loans. I'm still pretty annoyed they they dropped overdrive. 1y
minkyb Reading these comments I am very grateful for my library. I hope you find some options that won‘t cost a fortune. Good luck. 1y

Intriguing premise : that all versions of our Earth from fantasy to sci-fi (ie with varying degrees of magic and/ or technology) exist and are catalogued and connected by the Library. I know it‘s a series but I‘m hoping that this mission will be concluded within this book (I‘m about halfway through). There are lots more things to explore; Kai‘s background, elves, dragons...
