Radiance
Radiance: A Novel | Catherynne M. Valente
Radiance is a decopunk pulp SF alt-history space opera mystery set in a Hollywood-and solar system-very different from our own, from Catherynne M. Valente, the phenomenal talent behind the New York Timesbestselling The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making.Severin Unck's father is a famous director of Gothic romances in an alternate 1986 in which talking movies are still a daring innovation due to the patent-hoarding Edison family. Rebelling against her father's films of passion, intrigue, and spirits from beyond, Severin starts making documentaries, traveling through space and investigating the levitator cults of Neptune and the lawless saloons of Mars. For this is not our solar system, but one drawn from classic science fiction in which all the planets are inhabited and we travel through space on beautiful rockets. Severin is a realist in a fantastic universe. But her latest film, which investigates the disappearance of a diving colony on a watery Venus populated by island-sized alien creatures, will be her last. Though her crew limps home to earth and her story is preserved by the colony's last survivor, Severin will never return.Told using techniques from reality TV, classic film, gossip magazines, and meta-fictional narrative, Radiance is a solar system-spanning story of love, exploration, family, loss, quantum physics, and silent film.

This book was a struggle, so close to DNF. One chapter would totally excite and captivate me, and then the storyline would switch topics, discarding what interested me.

It‘s a fun mix of sci-fi and old Hollywood but by the end I was just straight up confused 🤣

I was excited for this mostly based on the unique formatting and the promise of mystery, but I feel like the author relied too heavily on the format to make the book interesting and dragged it out far too long. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

TheAromaofBooks I've tried to read this one twice and just couldn't get into the story. 2y

This was about a three star book for me. It was longer than it needed to be at 400+ pages, and the ending wasn't worth the payoff. However, it did have some beautiful imagery and was well-written. #BookSpin

After reading this and Space Opera, I am in awe of Valente‘s imagination. She writes the most surprising things with such daring and confidence. Radiance is a unique book — I‘ve never read anything like it. Because of that, it took me some time to get my bearings while reading it. But it is well worth reading because the setting is achingly gorgeous and fascinating, the story is beautiful and bittersweet, and the writing is wise and clever.

It took a little bit to get into this book, particularly since I thought Severin was pretentious. But the mystery draws you in and it was a race to the finish!

I rec‘ed this to the Spouse, but he took forever getting past the first few chapters so I was getting worried. (The beginning is hard going, and he‘s been fatigued from work.)
But he insisted he would finish it and in the end declared he was happy he had persisted. The verdict is that this is some of the best sci-if he has read in a long time. Up there with his fave, China Mieville, (strong praise indeed) but also reminiscent of Peter F. Hamilton.

This book is strange, and probably not for everyone. For the first 60 pages I wasn‘t sure it was for me. In the end I loved it and was sad to emerge from it. Radiance is part Gothic silent movie, part that bewildering scene at the end of the film adaptation of 2001: A Space Odyssey. It has a dash of Noir, a touch of carnival and comics, more than a hint of fairytale, and a liberal dollop of secret ingredient.

saresmoore Mmm, great review. She is a truly special talent. 6y
Leniverse @saresmoore On Twitter someone said, in connection with Space Opera, that she is the spiritual heir to Douglas Adams. Possibly that's more the case in Space Opera (which I haven't read), but I can see the comparison. She's a different thing all unto herself, but there's a bit of the same attitude to "reality". 6y
saresmoore Yes, that‘s exactly what it is. I think Valente takes her compassion and her snark a bit deeper than Adams, though. I found Space Opera to be remarkable in every way—wholly unique, just as Hitchhiker‘s Guide remains. 6y
See All 9 Comments
Leniverse @saresmoore I really need to read Space Opera! But I'm on a semi-book buying ban. 😅 Also, I have a huge stack of books that won't appreciate queue jumping by a new release. 😂 6y
Leniverse @saresmoore But I also feel compelled to defend Douglas Adams here. The Hitchhiker's series, especially the last couple of books, have a lot of debt. And pessimism. Valente is more optimistic on behalf of humanity, I think. Adams was depressed and disillusioned. 6y
2BR02B Great review. I agree that it's not for everyone- Valente's fantastical approach to space travel is sure to infuriate those who prefer hard science fiction- but it was a fun world to get lost in. 6y
Leniverse @2BR02B I go both ways. 😂 I love me some hard Sci-Fi, but I'm on board with weird alien dreamscape as well. What I'm not keen on is half-hearted, half-arsed attempts at science with as many inconsistencies and flaws as your average Hollywood movie. 😆 6y
saresmoore True. I think each author is incredibly talented and insightful and hilarious, but for different reasons. It‘s limiting when someone gets dubbed “The Next So & So”. I will definitely be reading this one! 6y
Moray_Reads This one blew me away. She keeps such form control but it's done with such a light touch. Something truly original. 6y

Catherynne Valente's books are always weird, like everything took a lateral leap somewhere and ended up slightly out of phase with what you'd expect. In Radiance we have space travel and a fully populated solar system, but no "talkies" - only silent movies, due to patenting laws.

I read this one yesterday and have some complicated feels. I really enjoyed the style, even though I found it a bit confusing most of the time. I enjoyed the way the characters were developed. The story itself seemed very confusing, until the wrap-up that happened in the last 20 pages. I think I really enjoyed it?

I can't believe I'm bailing on a Catherynne Valente... but I have to save this book for later. The only copy I could find through the library was an audiobook, but I feel like I have to read this story in print. This narrator is absolutely lovely, but I have a difficult time following epistolary stories on audiobook.

Does anyone else out there feel like certain stories should be experienced in a specific format and only that format?

Bloomingjen yes. I know what you mean. I have this on my TBR. I have a certain type of book for audiobook. I am also particular about ebooks. i can only read less "serious" literature in ebook format. If there is a book I really want to READ then I need a hard copy. I think I have a hard time concentrating. 6y
llwheeler I know what you mean, I've bailed on a few audiobooks for the same reason. I'll come back to the books, just in print. 6y
Clare-Dragonfly I don't really listen to audiobooks, but I definitely think this one would be hard to follow that way! 6y
See All 11 Comments
Larkken Oh yes! I get really bummed when I accidentally put a hold on the wrong version. 😜 6y
2BR02B I've heard others say the same thing about Radiance. I read it in print and enjoyed it, and I can see how the news reels and stuff wouldn't translate well to audio. 6y
KCorter @Bloomingjen I relate to all of what you just said. I have switched from ebook/audiobook in the middle of reading to a print copy for the same reason. I don't know why, but I just can't seem to completely focus unless I am holding the book. Maybe it is because I am usually doing chores while listening to the audiobook or reading on my phone feels too much like just browsing the internet. 6y
KCorter @llwheeler Definitely! It is a shame, because this narrator (Heath Miller) is truly impressive. I will look for other books he has read, but epistolary just doesn't translate well to an audiobook. 6y
KCorter @Clare-Dragonfly I'm just asking for curiosity's sake, but is there a reason why you don't read audiobooks? I avoided them myself for years, so now I am being curious. 6y
KCorter @Larkken Same here! Some stories translate well across all formats (see: Neil Gaiman), but some only work a certain way. At least, I feel like I can't fully appreciate some stories unless I read them the "right" way. 6y
KCorter @2BR02B I will definitely come back to it! I was enjoying it, but I feel like I wasn't catching everything by just listening. Catherynne Valente can weave such complex stories that I think I needed that extra focus. You know which of hers was really good on audiobook though? 6y
