Last First Snow
Last First Snow: A Novel of the Craft Sequence | Max Gladstone
13 posts | 12 read | 3 reading | 5 to read
Last First Snow: the fourth novel set in Max Gladstone's compellingly modern fantasy world of the Craft Sequence Forty years after the God Wars, Dresediel Lex bears the scars of liberation-especially in the Skittersill, a poor district still bound by the fallen gods' decaying edicts. As long as the gods' wards last, they strangle development; when they fail, demons will be loosed upon the city. The King in Red hires Elayne Kevarian of the Craft firm Kelethres, Albrecht, and Ao to fix the wards, but the Skittersill's people have their own ideas. A protest rises against Elayne's work, led by Temoc, a warrior-priest turned community organizer who wants to build a peaceful future for his city, his wife, and his young son. As Elayne drags Temoc and the King in Red to the bargaining table, old wounds reopen, old gods stir in their graves, civil blood breaks to new mutiny, and profiteers circle in the desert sky. Elayne and Temoc must fight conspiracy, dark magic, and their own demons to save the peace-or failing that, to save as many people as they can.

The first snow is due imminently. My last book of 2021 continues into 2022. It is my IRL Book Club read and we meet on Wednesday. Only another 200+ pages to go! 🤞🏻#lastfirst

For false gods, they cast long shadows.

(Great to see Elayne again!)

New books! New books! New books!

Well, two new books and two replacements because I am a boundless optimist when I loan out books. 😂 First thing I did with my stimulus check was place an order with my local bookstore.

#bookhaul #kingsenglish

BrokenTune That looks great. And I love the Pratchett goodness on top of that haul. 4y

If you want a book with perfect parents, do not read this book. If you want a book fraught with gods vs magic conflict and desperate choices that ends in an epic battle, you should read this book.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Looooooove this series! This one comes next for me. Are you going publishing order or title order? 5y
AiBBot I bought the first five of the series in a bundle on my Kobo. Thank goodness for sales! @TobeyTheScavengerMonk It is a fabulous world. 5y

One of the things I most appreciate about the Craft Sequence is that it is in essence an epic fantasy, but one that feels very grounded, that engages with the humanity of its characters. I feel like this particular book misses the mark a little on that front, but it's been a while since I read Two Serpents Rise, and that probably doesn't help. It's still a solid entry for sure, just doesn't grab me the same way.

Chelleo Great review and #1stpost. Welcome to Litsy! Hope these #Litsytips by @RaimeyGallant http://bit.ly/litsytips and #LitsyHowTo videos: goo.gl/UrCpoU are helpful. Public Service Announcement:

Right now on Amazon all of the books in the brilliant Craft Sequence are $3 each on Kindle or get the bundle for $12!

These books provide a diverse and thoughtful look at a very modern fantasy world as our characters adapt to life after the God Wars.

Lawyers with lightning knives! Gargoyle poetry slams! Skeletons in business suits! I recommend these and there‘s never been a better time to check them out!

mcipher That last paragraph... ❤️ 6y
readordierachel Who can resist gargoyle poetry slams! 6y
saresmoore I shared this post with my husband and his response was simply, “Yes.” Thanks for the PSA! 6y

readinginthedark You had me at “gargoyle poetry slams.” I love gargoyles! Which is the first in the series? 6y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @readinginthedark Fun question! You can read them in publishing order which is what I am doing (3, 2, 5, 1, 4) but the numbers in the titles tell how they take place on the in-Universe timeline starting with 6y
readinginthedark Oh no! 😆This is always such a hard decision. I guess I‘ll start chronologically in-story. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Thanks! 6y

#90sInJuly #day17 #BlackOrWhite Black seems to be the most popular colour for book spines. In my rainbow TBR shelves, every colour has one shelf to show the range in that particular colour, but black has two & a bit shelves all to itself. Even white has only one shelf. They do look good together though, don't they?

Though I still really liked this book, i think it's my least favorite of the series so far. I'm not sure why, but it was harder for me to stay engaged all the time with it. I'm still going to finish the series because the books are still better than a lot of other things I've read. However, I'm also still taking a break between installments to read something different.

I like the concept of lawyers being warriors too. But the title never made sense to me because there was no snow!

Decided to read the Craft Sequence in story chronological order rather than publication order. Tor.com article suggested you could do it either way. I decided I preferred to go from Last First Snow through to Full Fathom Five.

Once again, Max Gladstone has created a gem of a novel with interesting, diverse characters and a clever ending.
