The Gustav Sonata | Rose Tremain

Oh! The characters' lives are emotionally devastating but there is beauty in the details, and this is written beautifully, nonetheless. The ending was also BEAUTIFUL. This novel made me want to go out and read all of Rose Tremain's writing (and ask her what she did with my vocabulary). JUST. BEAUTIFUL.

LeahBergen I really need this now! I've read 3 of her books and loved them all. 7y
Texreader @LeahBergen which book of hers would you recommend first? 7y

When you're so excited you forget to take a photo until the credits are rolling. After an ending I'm always a little BIG BIT DEVASTATED that JK's characters are not real people that I can't Googlestalk in real life: Minerva, Molly Weasley, Cormoran, Robyn, and now Queenie and Jacob (a couple where excellent writing and excellent casting meet 😍)Also, JK's exploration of the sister relationship (Porpentina and Queenie) is beautiful.

MariettaSG Oh I know, aren't there so many characters you would love to meet in real life? 7y

This novel seems deceptively simple (albeit about horrible abuses of children). Events are described in a matter-of-fact way and often after the event), and I was going to rate it a so-so ... and then BAM, the last couple of chapters really smacked me between the eyes. So much hope ... so much reality.

EnidBiteEm I was going to edit out the dummy in the background, but then realised its suitability as a prop given the the title 😳😂 7y
MariettaSG I just stumbled upon Paradise and Sula at one of the local oppies, $6 for the pair, what a gift for me! 7y
JazzFeathers 'Home' by Morrison is in my TBR list. Never read her before, but l went to one of her conferences a few years ago and she just blew me away. Incredible woman. Incredible author 7y
ABitLit I felt the same way. The first few chapters were very slow going and then bam, it was an incredibly emotional and captivating finish. 5y

Would Abbott have been as big a tool without Credlin, his Chief of Staff? Is it fair to blame a woman no matter how horrendous, when he is such a Tool? Are they both just tools? Did they have an affair, or was it just an infatuation that should have been an affair so they could have got on with running the country less toolishly? Who cares? Not me. Maybe I should've read this at the time he was PM, now that the whole country's in the dustbin 😕

Marchpane 😂 Best review ever 👏👏👏 how Abbott ever got the job is beyond me. What a tool. 7y
Sue Feel the need to add my voice of support to Abbott and his toolishness. Of course. Credlin must be to blame - as a woman her job is to screw up politics. Or so seems to think everyone with an opinion in this country. Pretty sure she didn't make him say stuff like 'suppository of wisdom'. 7y

Party of tools, maybe? @Sue Yep, I'm quite sure he could have done this all on his own, Credlin just gave it a certain brand of weirdness. Ha! I'd forgotten the suppository gaffe 😂 Maybe that was his purpose behind casually plucking that raw onion from the box and eating it raw. He needed a SUPPOSITORY... 😂 @lauredh 😀 7y

I think I was expecting too much of this (all those comparisons to The Fault In Our Stars, and Eleanor and Park). I read 154 pages and although I would recommend this as #YAlit to a teenager, the characters did not grab me the same way as an adult as Green and Rowell's teenagers. I read the author's note and agree with her about everything (she didn't say it was as great as Green or Rowell!)

Lauredhel You were wise to bail, in my opinion. This book made me angrier than any other book I read in the year. Sooooo terrible. It's hard to say why without spoilers, though. 7y
TrishB That's not pushing it higher up my tbr list.....been on there a while! 7y
Smangela @TrishB I liked it! I felt like it was something that was different than the typical YA novels and different than what I normally read. For me I think it was the serious subject matter - I liked that the author didn't feel her audience was too young to read about mental illness and thought it could prompt some great discussion with teens. Absolutely to each their own though! I listened on audiobook not sure if that made a difference? Try out 7y
See All 9 Comments
Smangela I agree the comparisons to TFIOS And Eleanor and Park don't quite jive with me! That alone would alter my expectations of the book too 7y
TrishB @Smangela I've read 13 Reasons Why and enjoyed. This one is on the pile to read with my 15yo daughter so sounds like could be good choice. Thanks 😀 7y
EnidBiteEm @Smangela @trishb adding Thirteen Reasons Why now ... 😀 @Lauredhel Glad I did then ... tell me in the comments and then use the spoiler tag (the skull and crossbones) to cover them up? 7y
Lauredhel @EnidBiteEm I hated that it glorified suicide. The competed suicide was presented as sad, but ultimately beautiful because of the way it was done, with the 'treasure hunt' and so on. It was all about inspiring Violet, not about the wracking pain and ugly pointless death that actual suicide involves. It also presents medication in a very negative light. Manic pixie suicide, ugh. 7y
EnidBiteEm @Lauredhel Thanks. The dynamic between Finch and Violet didn't quite gel with me, his need to help her /feelings for her wasn't in keeping with the apathy he said he was experiencing but didn't actually demonstrate ... thus his actions seemed more like a plot device for suicide attempts and it seemed like, if it happened, it was going to be glorified. I'm glad I stopped reading. 7y
Lauredhel @EnidBiteEm spot on. Onwards and upwards! 7y

Small Great Things | Jodi Picoult

Pickpick

Is it cultural appropriation for a white woman to write from a black women's perspective? Picoult goes to great pains to justify her choice of narrator. The women she interviewed to research first-hand accounts of passive, daily racism experienced by thousands informs this novel (whether it is the dearth of black faces on birthday cards, leading couples in romantic films, or the glib 'I don't even see colour,' ...) ... review continued in comments

EnidBiteEm ... who go to great pains to prove they're not racist (with the expectation women of colour will be appreciative) shows discrimination by a thousand cuts. Is this cultural appropriation bc it prevents someone buying a diverse book - no, as many Picoult fans will read her regardless and this reading may lead to more purchases. (Churchill fought his enemies on the beaches, let's fight Trump in the bookstores). As Picoult points out, 7y
EnidBiteEm those who are in positions of privilege have the responsibility to speak out and be proactive, it is not enough to be 'not racist' when one is the beneficiary of that inequality. Not a Picoult fan? I went through a period in my 20s where I inhaled everything she wrote and then grew tired of the similarity of metaphorical language between very different characters, and this one has similar issues, plus the dialogue between the white 7y
EnidBiteEm Supremacist couple did not ring true for me at times. However, I applaud Picoult for the range of topics she is willing to tackle and research and think her books are undervalued (Stephen King agrees with me 😀). This was a great Picoult to inhale after a long hiatus despite the cloying similarities of some of the more flowery prose (hey, we can't have everything perfect). 7y

Cinfhen Great review! I'm in the middle of this read and agree there is MUCH to garner, contemplate, share and discuss. My problem at the half way mark, it's a little too trite and conventional in some of the writing and I'm getting annoyed with one of the MC, Kennedy. 7y
TrishB I think it helps open up the discussion for people who won't necessarily be as comfortable discussing. Popular culture can help in that sense and she is very popular! 7y
nickimags It was my first Picoult read and I loved it! 7y
EnidBiteEm @TrishB @Cinfhen Agreed 😀@nickimags isn't it good to find an author you enjoy who has a large back catalogue? 😍 7y
EnidBiteEm There is one thing I wanted to add - although I didn't want Ruth to go to prison, I'm not sure the ending drove home Picoult's point. Would the reader have learned more if Ruth had gone to prison even though she was innocent? Was it a feel-good white person's ending? 7y
nickimags Absolutely! ☺ 7y

I didn't agree all conclusions but this was an excellent read. It made me turn a microscope on my life experiences, and the ridiculous things that females may feel shame or guilt for that are not their fault but caused by years of entrenched patriarchy. So MANY double standards abound. I agreed with Ford's point about being proactive, and that it's not enough for men to just be 'not violent', although I don‘t think reciprocal anger is the answer.

This book!, again!!, is one of two that have been my most worthwhile reads to process a year that has been world-wide crappy elections and votes. Maybe somebody had to come back in their time machine and ensure Trump and Turnbull and Brexit prevailed bc the alternatives would have been the catalyst for so much worse? Maybe we're destined to not know? Or maybe this is just the bargaining stage of the 5 Stages Of Grief. Who knows? 🤔🤔🗽🕰

When I made my list of November birthdays for the #lazyphotochallenge I hadn't planned to slam my first writer ? but these books (Man and Boy was the first and based on his real experiences of single fatherhood) haven't stood the test of time. They're formulaic and the observations a little trite. However, the line "I once read somewhere that, in any relationship, the one who cares the least is the one with all the power," HAS given me pause.

EnidBiteEm #happybirthday ... I think 🤔 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I've heard that line before (and there is a fair amount of truth there) but never the author... 7y
EnidBiteEm @thegirlwiththelibrarybag it was one of the better lines in the novel. I agree there is some truth there, but I also think there is power in walking away even if you do care the most, if there's an imbalance. 7y

I may, or may not, have had my three children several years apart so that each time one comes of age - by which I mean they are introduced to Harry Potter (sadly, as I am from a long line of muggles, our family is still waiting to receive our first Hogwarts's acceptance letter) - the next child in line is just a little too young to join us. Alas. This way I will need to read, and reread, and reread. Such a shame. #booktober #rereads #harrypotter

Texreader You are clearly brilliant. Our two kids are similarly spaced. 8y
Bookgirl Haha! Smart! 8y
EnidBiteEm @Texreader Ha! I don't know why midwives don't advise this more often after your first is born. Surely it is an essential piece of information before you leave hospital? @Bookgirl. Yes. The spacing had nothing to do whatsoever with any other life factors 😂 8y

According to Guinness World Records, this is the world's biggest book (it was unveiled by the Mshahed International Group) and is entitled 'This the prophet Mohamed.' #guinnessworldrecord #llikebigbooks #nolikereallybig #ginormous #booktober #armache. It's in Dubai. Has anyone seen it?

Can long-distance love work? I loved this collection when I was younger, but now the voices seem limited - who are these people with oodles of time and no children or other responsibilities? Yes, some of them have careers, but there's not the sense that this is a key issue. Then again, the young Australian 20 to 30-somethings had to cope with long-distance love without social media. A nice snapshot in time, I suppose. #booktober #wishicouldbethere

I loved teaching this one. There is so much pain in this novel but there is also so much truth, and so many of my teenage reluctant readers were drawn in and inspired to read beyond this text. #booktober #favegraphicnovel #reluctantreaders

rachelm Love this one too 8y
APLitlife I teach it every year. The kids love it. One year, the kids went and bought the second one, because they wanted to continue. 8y
eva_lution Yesssss a favorite, and one of my #booktober picks also! 8y
EnidBiteEm @eva_lution I just found your review 😀. @APLitlife The Australian curriculum has changed significantly in the last few years and Maus was one of my casualties, but I still refer to it and there are copies in the library for those interested. How wonderful that your students sought the sequel 😍 8y

Bechdel's childhood was not unlike Wednesday Adams's, and this memoir raises interesting questions about whether we only see connections and the bigger picture in adulthood, or whether we simply get better at creating meaning where there is none.Bechdel is unflinching in examining the often unintended influences of her parents. I'm a recent convert to the #graphicnovel but I really enjoyed this #favegraphicnovel #booktober #bechdeltest #queerbooks

brendanmleonard I love this one! 8y
EnidBiteEm @Bibliogeekery and that's the hashtag I was looking for - thanks, I'll edit my post 😀 @brendanmleonard I'm glad I'm not the only one 😀I felt a bit mean ripping through her life in just a few hours but it was too good to put down. 8y

brendanmleonard @EnidBiteEm I also recommend the musical if it comes near you! I was mixed on her sequel but it's also worth reading. 8y
EnidBiteEm @brendanmleonard I live in Tasmania so it's unlikely, but I will definitely check out the sequel. Thanks for the recommendation 😀 8y
MandaChittles @brendanmleonard - It's a musical too??? Wow! 8y
Gezemice I am a recent convert, too, and reading through the best ones. This is on the list - loved Maus, and the Saga series! 8y
EnidBiteEm @Gezemice The Saga series?? 8y
Gezemice Yeah, one of my first graphic novel series. This is the first volume: 8y

There are refugee stories as well as #immigrantstories between these covers, but all together? Wow. There are many hardships and humiliations, but also narrators finding their first loves ❤️. There is self-deprecation and humour and heart-break. There are essays about those painful teenage years by writers, painters and politicians. I work these stories into the curriculum whenever I can 💕. #booktober

Alfoster Lovely! 8y
EnidBiteEm @Alfoster 😀 Alice Pung edited this collection, but her two memoirs and her novel are also wonderful. 8y

This is perhaps an unorthodox choice for #unforgettablewomen but as the mother of two sons myself, Klebold's story crushed me. She and her husband were engaged and loving parents. They knew the names of their son's friends and met their parents, they were interested in his choices and were involved in his community and yet their beloved child committed the most horrific of crimes. Review continued in comments...

EnidBiteEm Klebold does not profit from this book and although it may be seen as a form of carthasis, for her there can be no real carthasis. It also made me check my prejudices, when I realised I was reading it to see where they went wrong. They didn't. She wrote it (partially) in response to one of the victim's parents asking for her story. 8y
EnidBiteEm Klebold highlights the issues of the lack of mental or brain health checks and the danger of first person shooter games, but she points out the main question is not WHY it happened, but HOW it happened 😢 8y

Gayan I pre ordered this and still have not brought myself to read it. 😞 8y
BookHermit Thank you for the review. I also have two young boys. I heard an interview with Klebold on CBC a few months ago and have been curious/terrified to pick up that book ever since. 8y
EnidBiteEm @Gayan @Bookhermit It is worth reading and although emotionally wrenching it does not have gratuitous details so it is not scary from that aspect. Klebold is a thoughtful, intelligent woman and every word is considered. I read it in a day or two (I could not put it down), and even though I think of her words months later at least reading it quickly means you are not in an overwhelming head space for a long time if you want to move on. 8y
EnidBiteEm @Libby I thought so too. 8y
EnidBiteEm @BookHermit You're welcome 😊 8y
Gayan @EnidBiteEm Have you read Dave Cullen's Columbine? 😞 8y
EnidBiteEm @Gayan not yet. I take it you have? Worth reading? 8y
Gayan @EnidBiteEm Dave did a wonderful job, the research is impeccable. It absolutely opened my eyes as to how tragedy is turned into news and things are reported that are nowhere near the truth. It is one of my favorites. 8y
EnidBiteEm @Gayan I will check it out. Thank you. 8y
AAdamson @Gayan I second your recommendation of Cullen's Columbine. Being educators I couldn't help putting my husband and myself into the situation. Ripped my heart out. Sobbed talking to my mother-in-law about the book. Cullen suffered some PTSD after being at the scene. HIGHLY recommended. 7y

I've only read the first story, but the last few paragraphs? Wow. It is now the yard stick by which I secretly judge all others, which is completely fair given they have no chance to defend themselves 😂. I should really read the other stories, given the first had such an effect on me. #booktober #shortstories

I read everything this woman writes (well, that is published. I'm not a stalker. Although, fortunately for her fans, some of her journal entries were published this year in Everwhere I Look 😍). This is a 'novel' but details the frustrations Helen faces when caring for her terminally-ill friend. Coincidentally, Garner also did this in real-life. This book won three awards 💕#booktober #awardwinning #aussieauthors #australianlit

Zelma Ooh, moving up my TBR. I have had this on my TBR forever and really need to make time for it. 8y
EnidBiteEm @Zelma Great. I'm glad I could twist your rubbery arm 😀 Have you read any of Garner's others? I love her writing style. It is direct and unflinching. I think some writers create worlds, and some write to seek the truth. Garner is definitely a truth-seeker. 8y
Zelma @EnidBiteEm ha, I didn't put up much of a fight on that one! I haven't read anything by her but your review intrigues me immensely. She sounds fantastic. 8y
EnidBiteEm @Zelma She's definitely one of my all-time favourites. 8y

Michelle_mck @EnidBiteEm I was 18 when it came out and I saw the film first and then read the book. I was filled with a rage only an 18 year old can have 😂 8y
EnidBiteEm @Michelle_mck 😂 How dare Jack! How dare Nan! How dare they stuff it up? I remember so little of the film, only that if we thought someone was a bit of a duffer/loser/hufflepuff in the 90s we often colloquially called them a Benny, and sometimes, affectionately, we used that term with each other. We had never known a Benedicta or a Bernadette, and we read the book after, so when the film started and the lead was called 'Benny', we lost it 😂😂😂 8y
EnidBiteEm @Texreader It was. What a shame you can't send food over Litsy. I had to eat it all myself. Sigh. 😂 8y
Michelle_mck @EnidBiteEm 😂😂😂 8y
DebinHawaii Now I want to go back and reread it! I am actually fond of the movie (especially Minnie Driver & Alan Cunning) although the book is better for sure. 📚❤️ That cheesecake looks divine! 😀 8y

Is It Just Me? | Miranda Hart
post image

So, there is a moment early in this book where Miranda insists you do a forward roll to startle the person beside you. Let's just say, maybe, that I did it. Let's just say that maybe I destroyed my neck in the process. I did not destroy the physiotherapist, who happily gave me a billl. Should you read it? I don't know, I was in too much pain to finish. Miranda, my husband was not startled, he did not even wake up! I will send you the bill ...

Kirstin 😂😂Ouch! I had a similar experience when I tried to show my daughter how to do a cartwheel. 😱it's not like riding a bike. 8y
EnidBiteEm @Kirstin There should be age warning about these things, "you will not bend like you used to," or something ?? 8y

Kirstin @EnidBiteEm - Yes! At least a "consider stretching first" ? 8y
britt_brooke @EnidBiteEm @Kirstin 😂👏🏻 I already have to go to the chiropractor once a month, lol! 8y
Zelma 😂😂😂 I don't mean to laugh at your pain, but that story is great! (And oh I can relate to not being so bendy. We do the oldster shuffle in the mornings until everything stretches out normally.) 8y
kspenmoll 😟😃 8y
EnidBiteEm @Zelma @kspenmoll Wasn't there a scene in HP and The Cursed Child where someone was described as being middle-aged bc they started to make an audible and involuntary "oomph," when they sat down? Sadly, this me ... I started when I was pregnant with my third child, but she is several months old now and I haven't stopped. "Oomph, oomph, oomph, oomph!" ? 8y
