I love this book so much. I loved Violet and Finch and gosh I really fell for Finch. At the end I was just screaming for her to go find him and save him but when I read “Even when they bring the body up, swollen and bloated and blue” my heart just dropped. I immediately started crying and I cried for the rest of the book waiting for Violet to find Finch at the other wandering places and that he didn‘t actually die but that never happened. RIP TF💔

Trigger Warning: Suicide

I think this book could have had an important and impactful message.this book could have been about reducing stigma, listening to the signs, not being afraid to speak up. But instead, I found it really problematic. I thought it romantized teen suicide. I am over the tortured, mysterious, "sexy" trope.

corycatelyn @hes7 why did this book make you mad? 🤔 1mo
Scochrane26 @corycatelyn it made me mad because it handles mental health issues in a glorified way. Irresponsible in a ya book, especially because teen suicide risk is very high. (edited) 1mo

If this were only Violet‘s story, I‘d feel differently. Since it‘s Violet + Finch‘s, it made me mad.

It begins innocuously enough, an unlikely friendship forming between two struggling teens, helping each other through mental illness and grief. But then, with the (predictable) ending, it feels more harmful than helpful to the dialogue around mental health.

After this book + The Female of the Species, I really need some good, happy books. 😂

Scochrane26 As a therapist, I really had a problem with the last half of the book. There are other ya books that handle mental illness in a more responsible way. 1mo

This book was hard to read, but good to read. To me, it really isn't much like Fault in Our Stars, but is a different story about loss and mental illness. Finch shines brightly and full of life, though he spends his time deciding whether or not to die. His relationship with Violet is just as bright and heart tugging as the rest of the story. It can also serve as a warning to all parents, to listen, even when nothing is being said.

This book will definitely take me a few days to process... I‘m having trouble deciding if I liked it or not. To me, Holding Up the Universe had a better storyline, but regardless, I am sold on Niven‘s writing after reading another book of hers. My biggest complaint is that I predicted the entire ending within the first 25-50 pages, but that sometimes happens with YA. A solid pick for fans of Looking for Alaska by John Green. Grab some Kleenex.

This was one of the best books I've ever read. In the vein of thirteen reasons why ot was as real and visceral as any book about suicide. Finch and violet were amazing. This was funny and sad at the same time.

Still can't get over, the fact that Theoder left reality. I truly believe that he is now living in the world he had always wanted, but never had until it all ended. It was unfortunate to see how Violet wasn't able to save him through all the moments they shared together. Although, the wanderings that he left were lovely and heartbreaking at the same time. Jovian Plutonian effect, one of the best way to describe the feeling of being able to live🖤

It is one of the amazing books I've ever read. I was once again lost into the fictional world and finished it within two days because of such an enlightening story. All thanks to the author Jennifer Niven.

The story tells us about the two teens Finch and Violet. It is amazing to read where their destiny would take them in the future.

It is totally recommended for all the fans of ELEANOR AND PARK.

It's a sweet love story but asks some very pertinent questions. Its heart breaking and hopeful at the same time. It's about love and remorse at the same time. The book deals with teenagers wrestling with all kinds of complex issues & how important it is to talk to someone about it.The romance is beautiful, the loss heartbreaking, all in all a really good book
PS: This book could also be used as a guide to visit all the wonderful places in Indiana.

It rained today in Delhi which is unusual for this month. The rain and the cool breeze was very soothing just like this book. Even though the story is one of remorse and tragedy, it is told in the most simplest of manner with quotes from various books describing the characters feelings, it has a lot of emotions. 100 pages in and I am hooked.

Two years ago, my daughter told me not to read this book. She said it would upset me. She was right. But I seem to be a glutton for punishment so I suppose I am going to torture myself and see it through.

As an aside, and so I don‘t mislead anyone with my previous statement, this is a very good book.

Scochrane26 I liked the first half of this one, but I was upset about how the mental illness is portrayed & dealt with. It still bothers me, esp since I‘m a lcsw. I just thought it was irresponsible, & it took me out of the story. 7mo
Butterflyamore @Scochrane26 I haven‘t gotten past the first half yet although I already know what to expect in the end because my daughter warned me. I decided I would try to read it for a book group discussion but as a parent of a mentally ill child who has done some truly terrifying things that could have cost him his life, I feel extremely emotional about the text. 7mo

Jennifer Nivan writes a beautiful tale about two teens both contemplating love, life, and suicide. Though the story seemed predictable to me, I still felt Theo and Violet's story deeply and I believe Nivan tastefully discusses a taboo subject (subjects if I am being honest- suicide, abuse, drugs, bullying, divorce, lack of adult help/notice). A heavier read, but one that I am glad I read and one I reccommend.
