The Road to Ruin
The Road to Ruin: how Tony Abbott and Peta Credlin destroyed their own government | Niki Savva
4 posts | 2 read
Kevin Rudd was given no warning, but even he lasted longer than Abbott. Julia Gillard had plenty of warnings, but even she lasted longer than Abbott. Abbott ignored all the warnings, from beginning to end the public ones, the private ones, from his friends, his colleagues, the media. His colleagues were not being disloyal. They did not feel they had betrayed him; they believed he had betrayed them. Their motives were honourable. They didnt want him to fail; they wanted the government to succeed, and they wanted the Coalition re-elected. Abbott and Credlin had played it harder and rougher than anybody else to get where they wanted to be. But they proved incapable of managing their own office, much less the government. Then, when it was over, when it was crystal-clear to everyone that they had failed, when everyone else could see why they had failed, she played the gender card while he played the victim. In The Road to Ruin, prominent political commentator, author, and columnist for The Australian Niki Savva reveals the ruinous behaviour of former prime minister Tony Abbott and his chief of staff, Peta Credlin. Based on her unrivalled access to their colleagues, and devastating first-person accounts of what went on behind the scenes, Savva paints an unforgettable picture of a unique duo who wielded power ruthlessly but not well.

Would Abbott have been as big a tool without Credlin, his Chief of Staff? Is it fair to blame a woman no matter how horrendous, when he is such a Tool? Are they both just tools? Did they have an affair, or was it just an infatuation that should have been an affair so they could have got on with running the country less toolishly? Who cares? Not me. Maybe I should've read this at the time he was PM, now that the whole country's in the dustbin 😕

Marchpane 😂 Best review ever 👏👏👏 how Abbott ever got the job is beyond me. What a tool. 7y
Sue Feel the need to add my voice of support to Abbott and his toolishness. Of course. Credlin must be to blame - as a woman her job is to screw up politics. Or so seems to think everyone with an opinion in this country. Pretty sure she didn't make him say stuff like 'suppository of wisdom'. 7y
Lauredhel This is hilarious! Great review. 7y

EnidBiteEm And I couldn't have read this during the reign of the tools (it was published after 😳). @Marchpane Thanks 😀. I know! Party of tools, maybe? @Sue Yep, I'm quite sure he could have done this all on his own, Credlin just gave it a certain brand of weirdness. Ha! I'd forgotten the suppository gaffe 😂 Maybe that was his purpose behind casually plucking that raw onion from the box and eating it raw. He needed a SUPPOSITORY... 😂 @lauredh 😀 7y

#Halloween so I'm reading about Australian politics, A TRUE HORROR STORY. The book on the bottom also has a very apt title given the monkeys who are running our country. #halloweenreads #booktober #freedomofspeech

Let me just make this perfectly clear: a book challenge asked me to read a book whose cover I found unappealing. I went a little overboard with 'repugnant'. Only saving grace is the word 'ruin'. Mmmm, I am a little scared to start.

MrBook 😂👍🏻 You'll do fine. 8y
