The Watch Tower: Text Classics | Elizabeth Harrower

Pickpick

Read an article in a weekend paper about her. Never heard of her before. Requested books from library and got two. This one was a bit of a tough read. Dysfunctional relationships. Excellent writing. First published in 1966. Long out of print until Text reprinted all her work in 2012 . Still being printed . An Australian author who should be remembered and read.

LapReader There are lots of Sydney Writer‘s Festival podcasts about her I‘m sure you‘d enjoy. 2w

Did very well yesterday on the 📕 front. The tagged 📕 I got at the op shop on my way home from rehearsals. I couldn‘t believe my luck that it was still opened & was a bargain at $5. The 📕 in the middle is from my building‘s 📕 swap from an author I‘ve enjoyed in the past & the top 1 was from a st library I discovered while heading to the pub last Sun so visited again yesterday. Was a massive day & I‘m still buggered today. Tempers flared at 🩰.

Jeg I‘m not a Tim Winton fan but this book was very good. Nice copy you have too. Hope your ballet wasn‘t stressful. 2mo

A future dystopian judgement of our lack of commitment to science and change. So close to home. So timely. So sad.

This monument to Aboriginal sovereignty is going to take hot minute to digest. Wright did an excellent job making time amorphous & porous, such that the characters live simultaneously in the past, present, and even the future. (Homage to oldest extant culture.)There are a multitude of ways to interpret all of the themes, symbolism, etc. such that my head is spinning. 😵‍💫

Tamra Note, because the writing is akin to the oral story telling tradition & is often dreamscape like, the repetition can get tedious. 3mo
CarolynM Interesting cover. It can be really hard to get our white, western, linear minds around Aboriginal story telling but it‘s worth the effort. I need to bump this one up my TBR🙂 3mo
Tamra @CarolynM settle in and let her take you on the journey. 😊 It sounds like the same colonization tactics and consequences here in the Americas with respect to Indigenous peoples. 3mo

As I was putting this together, I realized that May 11-17 was a really good reading week...I listed my favorite, but there were a few other contenders, which is a lovely problem to have.

Farewell, May 2025! You were a good reading month.

I own this one in print, but I wanted to do housework today, so I opted for the audiobook. The contemplative pace is great for listening while doing chores. Everything in this novel means more than one thing, which I find comforting. There's also a comfort in the slow pace and the feeling that there's always time to reflect and improve. I feel like reading this on paper now, too.

Geraldton - childhood home of Randolph Stow. I was surprised there was so little acknowledgement of his work. But we did find the modern day version of the merry-go-round in the sea.
