November Road: A Novel | Lou Berney
147 posts | 50 read | 13 reading | 55 to read
Set against the assassination of JFK, a poignant and evocative crime novel that centers on a desperate cat-and-mouse chase across 1960s Americaa story of unexpected connections, daring possibilities, and the hope of second chances from the Edgar Award-winning author of The Long and Faraway Gone. Frank Guidrys luck has finally run out. A loyal street lieutenant to New Orleans mob boss Carlos Marcello, Guidry has learned that everybody is expendable. But now its his turnhe knows too much about the crime of the century: the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Within hours of JFKs murder, everyone with ties to Marcello is turning up dead, and Guidry suspects hes next: he was in Dallas on an errand for the boss less than two weeks before the president was shot. With few good options, Guidry hits the road to Las Vegas, to see an old associatea dangerous man who hates Marcello enough to help Guidry vanish. Guidry knows that the first rule of running is "dont stop," but when he sees a beautiful housewife on the side of the road with a broken-down car, two little daughters and a dog in the back seat, he sees the perfect disguise to cover his tracks from the hit men on his tail. Posing as an insurance man, Guidry offers to help Charlotte reach her destination, California. If she accompanies him to Vegas, he can help her get a new car. For her, its more than a car its an escape. Shes on the run too, from a stifling existence in small-town Oklahoma and a kindly husband whos a hopeless drunk. Its an American story: two strangers meet to share the open road west, a dream, a hopeand find each other on the way. Charlotte sees that hes strong and kind; Guidry discovers that shes smart and funny. He learns thats she determined to give herself and her kids a new life; she cant know that hes desperate to leave his old one behind. Another rulefugitives shouldnt fall in love, especially with each other. A road isnt just a road, its a trail, and Guidrys ruthless and relentless hunters are closing in on him. But now Guidry doesnt want to just survive, he wants to really live, maybe for the first time. Everyones expendable, or they should be, but now Guidry just cant throw away the woman hes come to love. And it might get them both killed.

I‘m supposed to be doing a #botmbuddyread for this book, but I couldn‘t stop reading it. 🤷🏼‍♀️ This is a look at the factionalized account of what happened to a mob member involved in the JFK assassination after the job was finished. But it‘s really about the man and how his life changed completely with one decision.

I'm enjoying the book of the month buddy read so much that I thought I'd read the next section tonight. Nothing like a hot cup of Peach Orange Tea with a Sunday night read. Probably wouldn't have been a book I would have picked out on my own so I'm happy that I'm quite enjoying the read so far.

#BOTMBUDDYREAD FINAL THOUGHTS

Did we miss anything you caught while reading?
Do you enjoy this writing style ?

While reading do you remember there are no cell phones -computers -security at airports -women have little rights-civil rights are nil-Vegas was the to the mafia..and it all wasn‘t so long ago.

kspenmoll Yes, it is clear that this is a very different time, and the mob did run some cities then. NY, Providence, Chicago. 3d
kspenmoll Love this cover. 3d
Mitch Indeed - although part of me likes the fact the crime, the corruption is all so close to the surface its in sight... today everything feels just as deadly but buried deeper 3d
See All 15 Comments
Hooked_on_books I‘m enjoying the book. It‘s building tension well and ably juggling multiple storylines. 3d
RachelAmphlett I‘m loving the writing style and I‘ve been getting completely lost in the setting and time! 3d
AmyG The second reading section got me hooked. I am invested in Charlotte, her kids and Frank. 3d
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @kspenmoll me too!! I think we are the only ones!! Lol 😂 3d
Sargar114 I agree @AmyG! I think the the author has done a great job of keeping me in the time period. It‘s beautiful writing. I‘m really enjoying it now! 3d
Librarybelle This section went much better for me than the first section. I'm not loving the book, but my interest is piqued to continue the story. It's been interesting to be transported to the 1960s in this - my guess is, in 2019, Frank would have been caught rather quickly by Carlos' henchmen. So, this adds some suspense. 3d
Jess861 Really enjoying this read and the writing style so far. It is keeping me engaged and it is hard to put down when I finish reading the chapters to be discussed. Can't wait to see where this story goes because I feel as though it can go many different places. 3d
TheBookHippie @Jess861 I can‘t wait either half dread half curiosity but I love how it reads. 3d
TheBookHippie @Librarybelle my guess is it would happen so much quicker, it is so much harder to hide now a days! I am intrigued more in this section. I enjoy the writing style more this section. I feel I‘ve got a grasp on it now. 3d
TheBookHippie @Jess861 It is hard to stop reading!!! 3d
TheBookHippie @Hooked_on_books I think the writing flow is really smart. 3d

Where do you think the story is headed? This section went quickly!

kspenmoll I just have this premonition things may end badly- deaths. But I cling to slight bit of hope...Unlike Whitman, Guidry is not free to travel the open road while he is desperate for his life; Charlotte is, except she has to keep her daughters safe. (edited) 3d
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll RIGHT?! Maybe we will get a redemption story 😬...it can‘t end well 😫 3d
kspenmoll @TheBookHippie Redemption would be wonderful! I do like the characters, even rooting for Guidry despite his mob history 3d
See All 14 Comments
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll Right two different journeys searching for freedom! A life. Redemption world be wonderful unlikely but still wonderful ☺️ (edited) 3d
Mitch @kspenmoll I like the characters too - its a very fast paced drama - but im liking the writing and the way the author is really fleshing these characters out - they're really coming to life for me 3d
TheBookHippie @Mitch I like it more and more it reads faster and faster which I believe is purposeful . 3d
Mitch @TheBookHippie Agreed - its almost like you're speed of reading matches the frenetic journey of the characters - it can only end badly! 3d
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I‘m liking it more and more, but worried about the ending for Guidry!!! 3d
Hooked_on_books I don‘t think it‘s going to end well for anyone. There‘s a dark seam running through this book for sure. 3d
RachelAmphlett Agree with @Hooked_on_books - I‘m enjoying it, but there‘s a menace lurking around the fringes isn‘t there? 3d
AmyG I think they fall in love And want to start a life together. I want it to end well but I am not so sure. 3d
Sargar114 I agree, this section was much better. I also think there will be redemption...but I‘m guessing specifically for Frank it won‘t end well (edited) 3d
Librarybelle I agree with others that this section read better than the first section. I'm still on the fence with the story, though. As we've said in previous answers to questions, there has to be a big climax, with potentially some of these characters losing their lives. Frank and Charlotte develop feelings for one another, and that will probably complicate matters. It should be interesting to see how things progress. 3d
Jess861 I think there will be death in the end - how much death is the question? 3d

Frank seems to be intrigued by Charlotte and the girls. Thoughts on this?

kspenmoll He seems to be figuring out a way to use them- camouflage maybe? Makes me nervous for them. Charlotte has never been anywhere outside her hometown & though she is determined, she has no experience outside that world. (edited) 3d
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll I keep thinking OH GIRL BE CAREFUL!! 😳 3d
Mitch @TheBookHippie Yes - there a lot of tension in these sections - i want to scream out at here like at a Punch N Judy show - “ behind you...!“ 3d

Mitch @TheBookHippie Another great photo! 🙌 🙌 🙌 🙌 3d
Mitch Im wondering if subconsciously Frank is thinking about his own life - and part of him might be wondering if he can play the role of husband / father - see what it feels like - an alternate path his life could have taken if things had been different 3d
TheBookHippie @Mitch RIGHT?!?! Yelling at book. I seriously want this dress now 😆 3d
Mitch @TheBookHippie And handbag! 3d
TheBookHippie @Mitch Sundays meant gloves for me until my 30s 😇 ha. So funny how quickly that all changed. 3d
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Mitch agreed!! But I also think he is using them as a cover. I think he will fall in love with her in the end though... 3d
Hooked_on_books I think he‘s intrigued, but I don‘t think he‘d have any compunction about shooting them all. It‘s who he is. 3d
AmyG I am thinking they fall in love. He is using her, she is using him...neither wants to be involved as each is so different than the other. I hear...love. 3d
Sargar114 I agree that the love story is on the horizon. Frank wasn‘t anticipating it, but since he knows the life he knew is on the kaputz that he subconsciously is open to a different life and Charlotte is more than he expected. And Charlotte is looking for different, hopefully better. 3d
Librarybelle I think both Frank and Charlotte are using each other as a means to an end. I'm pretty sure a relationship will develop. Where will it lead?? I guess we'll find out... 3d

Is Vegas going to be safe?
Is there ever honor amongst thieves?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iqFxY8uTyc

Remember Vegas was way different then. Video link above.

kspenmoll Great idea to use that utube video! So sixties! And totally unlike all the glitz & neon today. 3d
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll I do think sometimes when reading we forgot what time period we are reading in. For me it‘s so much better to make sure setting of story is right in my mind :) 3d
Mitch @TheBookHippie Agreed - its so hard to think backwards to another time.... I think we've been taken there with authenticity though 3d
See All 12 Comments
TheBookHippie @Mitch I do too. It‘s well done descriptively ! 3d
Mitch @TheBookHippie I agree - and its cleverly written = because the description doesn't get in the way of the pace of the thriller 3d
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I agree? It‘s hard to remember we are reading about the 60‘s! 3d
Hooked_on_books No and no! Not safe at all, no honor. Frank knows that. Poor Charlotte has no idea what she‘s gotten herself into. 3d
TheBookHippie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks you watch the video and see where they are headed and then fear for them 3d
AmyG I wonder if things don‘t come to a head in Vegas. Back then it was full of the mob and mobsters. 3d
Sargar114 I was thinking that too @AmyG. Vegas is where everything will happen and it probably won‘t be good! 3d
Librarybelle Yes, @AmyG and @Sargar114 ...I was thinking the same thing! 3d
Jess861 Not safe at all and if Seraphine is a step ahead she may figure out where Guidry is heading (it would make sense that he goes to someone who hates Carlos). Will he actually make it to his destination? That remains to be seen. 3d

Seraphine, what is her reasoning? Why must Frank be killed ? Is there more we don‘t know ? Why was he picked in the first place ? Before the job he is in now. Is this more elaborate than it appears or all massive cover up after the fact? What string of events lead to this? Will we find out?

Mitch It's interesting - killing everyone up down the chain until nobody is left....I think Berney is switching between the characters stories really well - im kinda being convinced by all the voices! 3d
TheBookHippie @Mitch I do enjoy learning ALLL the ins and outs. Fascinating to read. 3d
Mitch @TheBookHippie Yeah - its an odd book - it works on lots of different levels for me- part thriller, part road movie, mystery, crime and all very well written....really enjoying it! 3d
See All 16 Comments
TheBookHippie @Mitch enough history and nonfiction truth as a bonus!! 3d
Hooked_on_books I think when you kill a sitting president, the fewer people who know about it, the more likely you are to keep in under wraps. So I get that. But I really don‘t think we‘ll ever learn why. Seraphine is interesting, but this book is decidedly not about her and her motives. Though I would love to read that book! 3d
TheBookHippie @Hooked_on_books I agree I‘d love to know her story!!! 3d
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @TheBookHippie me too!!! How did she get where she is?! 3d
RachelAmphlett I‘d love to hear her story too! I wonder if it‘s her fault it‘s all gone wrong and she‘s just doing what she‘s doing to appease Carlos? 3d
AmyG @Mitch yes...an odd, yet good book. I think the mob is covering tracks. I also hope we learm more about Seraphine. 3d
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I wonder if Carlos will get rid of Seraphine for botching this with Guidry?? 3d
Sargar114 I again agree with @Hooked_on_books it‘s just a massive cover up but we‘ll probably never know why Frank specifically. I can‘t help but think of Goodfellas and that there‘s really only two ways out, prison or dead...and Franks time was up I guess 3d
Hooked_on_books @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I think that depends on how it ends and on who‘s really in charge. I also wouldn‘t put it past Seraphine to take out Carlos if she thinks he‘s gunning for her. 3d
Librarybelle Agreed, @Hooked_on_books ! And, knowing more about Seraphine would be very interesting! 3d
Jess861 All just collateral damage when it comes to killing the president - don't think Carlos has much choice. Seraphine is definitely an interesting character and I'm not sure she'll make it out of the book alive with everything that has gone on so far. 3d

SO what do you think of Frank making sure Charlotte had to ride with him? ARE they safe?
Charlotte taking her girls and going?!

Mitch Deeply manipulative and super gullible ...... i think it shows her lack of worldliness and inexperience 3d
Hooked_on_books He gave her a solution right when she was out of options. So clever. But so wrong. 3d
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I‘m worried for them! He‘s already shown that he is out for himself only!! 3d
See All 8 Comments
AmyG Yes...to what all of you said. As for Charlotte....desperate times, desperate measures. He cares about himself. I have a sneaky feeling something happens between them. Makes sense. 3d
Sargar114 Another reason to dislike Guidry. I don‘t know if Charlotte saw herself as having any other option, I can‘t say I would do it with my kids but it was a very different time then and he has made himself look to be a trusting individual. The idea of it all terrifies me!!! 3d
Librarybelle Charlotte's decision to go with him does seem like desperate times, desperate measures, like @AmyG said. I cannot help but feel that, despite Charlotte being strong in so many ways, a decision like this shows her vulnerability and her naivety. A different era, but it would take a lot more than a “good looking“ guy telling me he would take my kids and my dog and myself to LA in his car for me to believe him and go. I'm sure a relationship develops. 3d
Jess861 Charlotte didn't have a choice in the matter thanks to Guidry - so I can't fault her for taking the ride. Not much she could do thinking she had no vehicle anymore. They are definitely in danger now that they are traveling with Guidry and in the vehicle that Barone and Seraphine already know about. 3d
AmyG @Librarybelle Yes, such a different time. A time where more people were trustworthy than not. Today it‘s totally the opposite. So much fear. 3d

What do you make of Barone and the kid? Can you believe he killed those cops too? What do you think of the kid? Do you feel like we‘re just barrelling towards DANGER ? All the details and build up for one huge event ? And we‘re getting all the sides of the story from each person involved first?

Hooked_on_books I do think all these characters are headed for a major event/clash. I worry for Charlotte and her kids what that means for them. Barone seems to have no conscience. He‘s so matter of fact about what he does that I actually don‘t hate him. I worry about the boy with him—I don‘t think he has a clue what kind of danger he‘s in. 3d
TheBookHippie @Hooked_on_books I‘m so worried about that little boy!!! 3d
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Me too!!! Poor kid and he was trying to take care of him when he was sick 😓 3d
See All 9 Comments
AmyG Barone is a mobster, a killer. The kid is hoping to get ahead somehow...money, whatever. I agree....there will be a moment when this all comes together. 3d
Sargar114 I am partial to the kid since I have a son named Theodore (but we call him Teddy 😂). I think he just saw an opportunity and didn‘t think much of it. I agree I worry about what will happen. I like having the perspective of Barone though, it really adds to the suspense of the story. 3d
Librarybelle Yes, @Sargar114 ...I too like Barone's perspective in the story. Poor Theodore! I was waiting for Barone to take him out of the story, though I suppose he needs him for a little bit longer to drive cars. This is all leading up to something big. 3d
Jess861 I enjoy the kid - just trying to get ahead in life and off on a little adventure. He saved Barone's life and helped take care of him when needed so it will be interesting to see if Barone develops a heart for the kid. 3d
Sargar114 I certainly hope so @Jess861 3d

The camera . A reminder of good. Has this ever happened to you in a low moment? Is this hope to keep her going? Is it a sign ?? Do you believe in forces out there that you need to pay attention to? Is it just a crazy coincidence ? Do you read things into happenstances such as these ? What does this say about Charlotte? Her need for the camera ?

Mitch It was a sweet moment - when she spotted the camera and stuck gold with the shop owner....I read this recently - that also had a person taking pictures thourhgout the book - she then printed the polaroids in the book - it was a great way to see the story retold through one of the characters eyes. 3d
TheBookHippie @Mitch oh I stacked that!!! Looks good. 3d
Hooked_on_books I don‘t think it was a sign or believe in forces. What I do think is that our subconscious knows what we want and seeks out ways to show it to us if we are being blind. The camera was a reminder for her of something she enjoyed as her own person and a possible way out. I thought it was a nice touch. 3d
See All 6 Comments
AmyG What‘s that saying....something like coincidences are the universe revealing truth. And in photos...there is truth. What you see is what you get. A reminder to her of that. And a bit of her “old” life‘s hopes and dreams. 3d
Sargar114 I tend to be a believer that things like that happen when you need them to. But maybe it IS because like @Hooked_on_books said and it‘s your subconscious seeking things like that out when you need it. Either way, I liked it. 3d
Librarybelle I do believe in signs, to a degree. Maybe it's your subconscious seeking things out, or maybe it's a world full of coincidences. But, there's just some things that appear right when you need them to appear, or something happens that prevents you from taking a path. This was a nice moment for Charlotte, and yes, it helped to show that there are truly kind people in the world. 3d

Why do you think Charlotte called home? Dooleys response -where‘s the sugar?!
Do you feel bad for Dooley at all?
Was he condescending in his words?

Mitch Oh i didn't feel sorry for him! He did miss the kids, and Charlotte has played the role of that type of wife for their entire marriage - so his comments didn't surprise me. How hard did she try to change with him - rather than need to leave him in order to change?? 3d
Hooked_on_books Dooley is such a product of his era that I should feel sorry for him, but I just don‘t. I think she called him because she just didn‘t know what to do in that moment and was looking for options. I‘m glad the call strengthened her resolve. 3d
TheBookHippie @Hooked_on_books I agree -I was so worried she‘d go back !!! Phew. I don‘t like him at all. Reminds me of 3d
See All 9 Comments
Hooked_on_books Totally Stepford! 3d
AmyG I, too, think at that moment she felt Dooley was an option to help. But was then Reminded of why she left. Do I feel sorry for him? No. 3d
Sargar114 I also think with everything happening, she was questioning her decision to leave. So the call home was a moment of weakness, and then Dooley‘s comments (while of the time) reaffirmed her decision. 3d
Librarybelle As others stated, Dooley's comments were really of that era. Do I feel sorry for him? No. Charlotte felt desperate at this point, and probably needed to reaffirm decisions. She made the right one leaving him! 3d
Jess861 I'm not surprised with Dooley's response since it fits with his character and the time. I think she called because she said she would and wanted to let him know that she and the kids were alright. I don't think she planned to go back to him - just doesn't want to up and disappear though. 3d

Why do you think the sheriff let Frank go? What do you think of how that played out? Justice for bad associations ? You think every mobster, mobster solider or associate ever lives to tell? Frank seems to remember all little details that keep him one step ahead, is this his survival skills learned from childhood?

Mitch I think the Sherif seemed like he was quite naïve - i think he really believed that the get out scenario that Frank gave him would actually work. I think he's probably quite a few steps removed from the action, perhaps his first time this close to the action??
3d
TheBookHippie @Mitch I assume so as well. I think sometimes it is romanticised too, the mob. Or people do not realise how dangerous it is to associate with them. 3d
Mitch @TheBookHippie I think he believed that others play by the same rules as he did - the world doesn't work like that 😤 Tough lesson - learnt! 3d
See All 12 Comments
Hooked_on_books @Mitch @TheBookHippie I agree with you both. I think the Sheriff was just a decent person at heart and tried to save someone, not expecting to end up dead himself regardless. I almost wonder if this was his first high-stakes interaction with this group, so he didn‘t truly know the risks. 3d
Mitch @Hooked_on_books He really read that situation badly! 3d
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Hooked_on_books I wondered that also... 3d
AmyG I wonder if the sherrif was part decent person part....he just doesn‘t want to get i volved in this stuff. If they could do this to Frank, what would he get stuck doing n the future and what could happen to him? As for Frank...he‘s a mobster. He knows how they think and act, he is a smart guy...so he can stay a step ahead. 3d
Sargar114 I agree with others, that he was being naive in letting Guidry go. Otherwise it doesn‘t make sense. It makes me dislike Frank knowing that he caused the sheriff to die for essentially no reason. I also found it interesting that Barone acknowledges that his reaction was excessive and blamed the infection fever for it. 3d
CoffeeNBooks I don't think the sheriff had any idea what he was getting himself into, but I don't think things would have worked out well for him either way. I think once he was in association with the bad guys, things were going to work out badly for him. 3d
Librarybelle I agree with @CoffeeNBooks ...there is probably an assumption going into an arrangement like this that you “think“ you know the dangers. But, the sheriff in a very small town in the middle of nowhere probably doesn't have a complete picture of what these mob bosses can do. And, I feel the same way as @Sargar114 ...Frank did not win points for me with his actions. He knew the risks, and I know at this point, he's thinking of saving himself. But... 3d
Librarybelle ...he had to know that Carlos and his crew would come after the sheriff and anyone set up as a pretend Frank. I did find it interesting that Barone acknowledges he let his temper/illness take over and take out everyone. 3d
Jess861 I believe that when Guidry brought up the Sheriff's family it is probably when he thought maybe I'll let this guy go. I think he would have ended up dead either way - but he did almost get away with switching the prisoner. 3d

Ruby kills Oswald and there‘s a hit on Frank..
He knows it.
Can you imagine how that feels?
Ruby and Oswald set up? For whom!?

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/4778698/jfk-files-explosive-documents-reveal-lee-h...

Hooked_on_books Frank chose this life and seems unsurprised by the hit. It feels logical to him. But I think this would be terrifying. Especially with the organization‘s apparent reach. He was clever to disguise himself with Charlotte and her daughters, but the tension for him has to be off the charts. 3d
AmyG That the mob got away with this is terrifying...what @Hooked_on_books said. I can‘t imagine how he would feel. But anxious would be a gross understatement. He chose to do what he did. 3d
Sargar114 Completely agree @Hooked_on_books I would be going crazy with the fear. It was super smart to hook up with Charlotte and her daughters. 3d
Librarybelle Completely agree with @Hooked_on_books ! I would be so terrified. But, Frank seems to get it. He's expendable, and he's done hits for Carlos that took out other guys who “knew too much.“ Still, terrifying! 3d
Jess861 I as well completely agree with @Hooked_on_books - but I also feel that this is the life he chose and it probably wouldn't be that surprising after the initial shock. 3d

Just started reading this yesterday and loving it so far. I‘m fascinated by everything Kennedy and this time period. It pulled me in right away with all the New Orleans references especially the places that aren‘t there any more. I vaguely remember my dad talking about Carlos Marcello. Excited to see where this will go!

Kimberlone @TheBookHippie thanks! This was my BOTM for December last year. I may still participate in the discussion, but I don‘t have the book anymore! I look forward to seeing the choices for 2020 because I have a lot of BOTM books on my shelf that are still unread. 1w

#BOTMBUDDYREAD FINAL THOUGHTS
Did we miss anything ???
Anything strike you while reading ?

Sargar114 Great Questions!!! I‘m middle of the road on this one so far, but knowing these discussions were happening kept me going!!! 1w
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 🧡 I love our weekly discussions too. I‘ve got hope for this book yet ...I‘m middle of the road as well but it has me researching and pondering so that‘s always a good sign! 1w
Jess861 Great discussion so far - thank you for letting me participate even though I'm not part of the BOTM buddy read, it is much appreciated! Random - but I am curious as to how Charlotte will take care of a dog on medicine while on the run with very little money. 1w

TheBookHippie @Sargar114 gosh no❤️ it‘s for everyone 🤪❤️❤️❤️❤️ anyone who wants to read along with us every month/week we love all the participation!!! We are in our third year starting this month. I like all your points! Helps the book be a better read. 1w
TheBookHippie @Jess861 BOTM buddy read is for anyone who wants to read a book for an entire month and discuss it weekly on Sundays by the sections laid out. ALLLL are welcome at anytime. ❤️ (edited) 1w
AmyG After this section I want to read more. Do I love this? No but hoping I will. I am thinking this book is more of a slow burn for me. Thank you for the questions! Year 3? Wow. And I love seeing different perspectives on these stories...and being shown things I missed. Love my online book club. 😘 (edited) 1w
Sargar114 Year 3!!! Wow. I‘m loving it. It keeps me on point of reading my BOTM that just sit on my shelf collecting dust! 1w
Mitch Im - happy to have discovered something different from my norm, happy to be reading along with other wonderful readers and happy with Berneys writing style so far! 1w
TheBookHippie @Mitch I am liking this style of writing as well. I now really want to visit New Orleans too 🤷🏽‍♀️😂😊 1w
TheBookHippie @AmyG I know we‘re in year three 😱 how did that time go so fast!!! I so love all our Sundays ! Even our awful books 🤪 1w
CoffeeNBooks While I'm not loving the book so far, I love reading the discussion questions and answers- sometimes it helps me better understand parts of the book that I don't like. I love seeing everyone's perspectives! 1w
Librarybelle Thanks for the questions! This is the third month I've participated, as I've had these BOTM books on my shelf and haven't read them. It's so good to read with others and get others' take on the sections. I'm not a fan of the book so far, but sometimes books start off a little slow and get better as they progress. 1w
TheBookHippie @Librarybelle it is so much fun to make the questions ! So glad you‘ve joined us! As @CoffeeNBooks said I love seeing everyone‘s perspective. I also learn every read. 1w

“...there's always a bumpy road than the one you're riding on...
We end with this quote ..
Is this way of thinking helpful or hurtful?
Was she reassuring herself?

RachelAmphlett I got the impression she‘s reassuring herself and that by doing this she‘ll keep going in the direction she‘s chosen... 1w
Sargar114 I agree @RachelAmphlett I thinks it‘s more hopeful. Things could be worse and she‘s doing this so that they aren‘t! 1w
Jess861 It is definitely placing a positive outlook on her current situation. Which I think is the best she can do for herself at the moment with little money, nowhere to go and two girls and a dog to take care of. 1w
See All 7 Comments
AmyG What did Charlotte have to lose? Things were already bad for her. If she didn‘t try to change things....nothing would ever change. 1w
Mitch I think it might be hopefully - but also might be a hint of what's to come - that this part of the story is the smooth bit - and the bumps are coming! 1w
Librarybelle I think she's reassuring herself - creating a positive outlook on her current situation. 1w
Hooked_on_books I think it‘s used hopefully here but also has the potential to be hurtful a la learned helplessness. I actually really like this quote. 5d

#BOTMBIDDYREAD #10 FYI:
In its 1978 investigation Jack Ruby's murder of Lee Harvey Oswald as a primary reason to suspect organized crime as possibly having involvement in the assassination, noted the presence of credible associations relating Lee Harvey Oswald and Jack Ruby to figures having a relationship with Marcello's crime family. Marcello had the motive, means and opportunity to have JFK assassinated. Thoughts??

Sargar114 I‘ll admit I don‘t know much about the mob theories, but part of me thinks it‘s so complicated and I tend to go with Occam‘s razor and the more simple solution being the more likely. 1w
Mitch I know nothing - but want to know more! Love when books send you down a rabbit hole and as a result of reading one book you add at least 5 more to your TBR. 1w
TheBookHippie @Mitch so far I‘ve added 3 and I‘ve only read 8 chapters 😳 1w

#BOTMBUDDYREAD #9

How are you liking this read? Is it what you thought? How do you think our characters are going to meet?

RachelAmphlett I didn‘t read the blurb or anything before starting it, I just bought it based on some bloggers raving about it. At the beginning, I wasn‘t sure what to think, although I adored Berney‘s turn of phrase with characters and setting. When it transpired he *might* have had a hand in the assassination, I was like whaaaat? 😂 1w
TheBookHippie @RachelAmphlett I always go in blind to these #BOTMBUDDYREADS so I‘m unbiased to make questions and read it clean -so I had the same reaction ! I didn‘t read the flap on the book til yesterday 😬😳 1w
RachelAmphlett @TheBookHippie I did the same with an Instagram readalong of King‘s Duma Key earlier this year and I think I enjoyed it more for that reason 1w
See All 19 Comments
TheBookHippie @RachelAmphlett I am finding I prefer it. No clouding of judgement even if I think I‘m going in blind. It‘s fun to find out all together as well as speculate together. 1w
Sargar114 So far, I‘m meh. I really like Charlotte but not overly fond of the noir style going along with Franks story. I think I‘ll enjoy it more now that they‘re on the run. But I do like seeing the perspective of the hit man. That‘s an exciting touch and will give a good cat and mouse kinda feel. 1w
Jess861 This isn't a book I would've picked up if I hadn't decided to try and join in on this conversation (if I can find the time). I find myself pleasantly surprised and am enjoying the book so far. I was able to get to the end of chapter 8 fairly quickly and found myself wanting to read more. I am interested to see how the characters meet as I really haven't an idea at the moment (although I assume they will meet somewhere on the road very soon). 1w
AmyG I probably wouldn‘t have picked this up on my own. I wasn‘t too sure about it but am curious to see where this all leads. I like the Charlotte part the most and I figure her and Guidry will meet at some point. I, too, @Sargar114 am not a fan of the Frank noir part. I am thinking this will get better the more we know. 1w
Sargar114 I think so too @AmyG. I think it was mostly for character introduction so now that he‘s on the run it may be more standard narration. 1w
Mitch @Jess861 Totally agree - the cover would have put me off from reading it myself - but im enjoying it. It has a good sense of place- and i love a book where I can picture the landscape. The writing's good so far and im lovinG The diverse range of characters.Good choice @thebookhippie and @alwaysbeenaloverofbooks 1w
TheBookHippie @Mitch the cover -I so agree! 1w
TheBookHippie @Jess861 We try to stretch ourselves out of our normal reading patterns I‘m finding I learn so much this way and read books I would have never looked at. It‘s been so much fun. 1w
CoffeeNBooks I had no idea what this was about before I started reading it. I'm not sure how I feel about it so far. I'll keep reading, though. 1w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Mitch thanks!! I‘m at work and trying to look at the conversation!! 😱😱☺️☺️ 1w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @TheBookHippie @Mitch awww I like the cover 💗 1w
Librarybelle I'm thinking it's a meh read so far. After the first chapter, I did contemplate whether or not to continue. But, I continued reading and got into the rhythm of the narrative. If I had to rate the book at the moment, it's probably somewhere between a 2 and 3 star. However, I'm interested to see how Frank and Charlotte's story intersects. And, I want to see what happens when Carlos and his team realize Frank skipped town. 1w
Mdargusch So far I‘m really enjoying it and I‘m glad I can start reading the next section! 😆 1w
Hooked_on_books I hated the first chapter. I found Guidry to be a despicable man who treats women like garbage and thought the noir style was way overdone. But I kept reading and with each chapter I like it more and more. I‘m excited to continue reading—it‘s got me for sure. 5d

What theories involving the mob regarding JFK have you heard? Did they get him the presidency ? Was JFK father a part? Could this story be true?

Sargar114 I don‘t know too much of the mob theory but I had thought it had to do with Bobby Kennedy since he was the attorney general and was going after the mob pretty aggressively 1w
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 I know JFK purportedly slept with a girlfriend of a mob boss and it‘s been says they supplied women to him 😳 1w
AmyG @Sargar114 I agree....wasn‘t Bobby Kennedy as AG cracking down on the mob big time? They couldn‘t have been happy. 1w
Mitch I dont know too much about the mob connections- but i'd hazard a guess that throughout time - money and power has influenced many powerful positions and decisions made in our name. 1w
Librarybelle I'm not very familiar with mob theory with the Kennedys. I have heard about possible connections, including the buying of votes to get JFK elected president, but I cannot say whether or not I believe those theories. I still need proof one way or the other. 1w

The mob. It was really active in 1963. What do you know of it? Do you believe it is? Do you think it‘s still active today?

AmyG I don‘t know much about the mob. Is it active today. Yes. Perhaps more than ever. And not just in the US. Look at Russia. Not all mobs are called the “mob”. 1w
Librarybelle I haven't read much histories on the mob, so I know my knowledge is limited. But, what I do know is that the amount of power the mob bosses have is unbelievable. And, they have their hands in every type of business and organization. It's an open secret, for instance, that the community my dad grew up in has mob ties - the Catholic diocese is mob controlled! That is not speculation. Yes, I believe it is still active today. 1w
TheBookHippie @Librarybelle I think it‘s extremely active. Russian Italian American Etc etc the mob will always be around in my opinion. 1w
Hooked_on_books I don‘t think it‘s as active as it once was but is definitely still around. I have a friend who went to medical school in the late 90s in Chicago who saw a Gambino as a patient and was told he should be their “family” doctor. I think now billionaires function in the way the mob did then—openly breaking laws and using their wealth to buy politicians/elections. Same concept, more “respectability.” 5d

#BOTMBUDDYREAD #6

Money is mentioned frequently as we read I thought this might help. Isn‘t this hard to wrap your brain around?! Do the amounts that Charlotte and Frank have on them play into the story?

Sargar114 I‘m assuming their stories will cross paths but I haven‘t already any synopses since first getting the book last year. I‘m sure it‘ll play a role 1w
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 I assume so too -it‘s a lot of money talk in very certain amounts. Unless it‘s just for perspective .. 1w
Sargar114 @TheBookHippie I didn‘t really notice the money talk until I saw this question. Haha. But looking back yeah that would make sense. As a mom when she‘s adding it up, I would totally do the same thing. And now I realize Frank was doing it just before he left for Dallas...so he was doing the survival thing someone mentioned earlier. 1w
See All 20 Comments
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 Right as a mom you‘d be counting up and figuring it out. That was my thought too. Both need to survive on what is at hand. 1w
Jess861 These stats really showcase the inflation in prices of, well, everything. I think if Charlotte had more money she would have left her husband long ago. If Frank had more money he probably would have fled the country. 1w
TheBookHippie @Jess861 I agree. I was telling my kids I mentor when I first moved out it cost me 280 in rent and 40 bucks a week for groceries movies were 3 dollars... they about lost it. Five dollars an hour was a huge deal if you could get there😱 1w
Sargar114 @Jess861 good point about Frank staying in the country! I was thinking earlier that it seemed excessive that he had flown to Dallas cause I don‘t know how common flying was as a means of transportation in the 60s. Then again, it was on the mobs dime...but then why leave a paper trail 🧐 1w
Jess861 @TheBookHippie Just in the last 15 years it has been crazy. Minimum wage when I was in my late teens was just under $7 an hour, now it is $15 an hour (where I live). I think minimum wage is a good way to gauge how costs of other items have gone up. 1w
Jess861 @Sargar114 I think that flying was still a common means for transportation in the 60s although I'm sure less were doing it and it was more of the upper class. However, I bet you could fly with a lot less of a paper trail then there is now days. I don't imagine security around flying being anywhere near where it is today. Although, I also remember Frank stating that he was sure Seraphine would have people watching the flights to Dallas and Miami. 1w
Sargar114 @Jess861 ahhh yes Seraphine!!! Always keeping tabs! 1w
AmyG The average cost of a house couldn‘t get you a new car today. Pretty wild. Everything comes down to money....it‘s how they will survive....like @Sargar114 said 1w
Mitch Id gladly part with 591 for a 1963 ford cortina - classic!!
1w
Mitch I really liked the money talk - I thought it both set the scene in terms of where we were in time - as well as reminding us the characters are working class people making ends meet 1w
TheBookHippie @Mitch me too!!!!! Oh a classic! 1w
TheBookHippie @Mitch It puts us in the correct frame of mind for the story I believe. 1w
Librarybelle Isn't inflation wild?!?! I like @Mitch 's train of thought - these are working class people who are trying to make ends meet. Money is going to play a big role, I bet, as we move further in the storyline. 1w
Mdargusch Interesting since I hadn‘t noticed so much money talk. $300 will buy lots of bread! 1w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Mdargusch yes!!! I was thinking she wouldn‘t get very far on that!!! 1w
TheBookHippie @Mdargusch Seriously!!!! 1w
Hooked_on_books I hadn‘t thought about the difference in money value for the 1960s, so I‘m glad you brought this up. It‘s interesting to see that house prices have gone up much more precipitously than car prices. 5d

#BOTMBUDDYREAD #5 1963 Christianity, which placed the indissolubility of marriage at the core of its beliefs ruled law: Divorce was limited to occasions of grave offense and generally prohibited/courts lost their power to adjudicate matrimonial cases upon marriage, husband and wife became one person in law, with the wife‘s legal existence being suspended for its duration. Thoughts?
https://vardags.com/family-law/divorce-and-womens-rights-a-history

Sargar114 It‘s sad to think that technically Dooley wouldn‘t qualify for any of society‘s grave offenses. Even though drinking away all their money and not working seems to be pretty destructive and grave to me. 1w
Jess861 @Sargar114 Agreed - Even though I don't think Dooley really realizes what he is doing to his family, it is not fair to his wife or his girls. Charlotte should be able to divorce on the grounds that he is wasting their money (and time) away with drinking. Although I am of the belief that with how easy it is to get a divorce now days it has swing too far the other way. 1w
AmyG Dooley knows the “power” he has because of society. That frees him to do whatever he wants. Charlotte knew the only way out for her was to leave. (edited) 1w
See All 10 Comments
Sargar114 @jess861 I agree that society swung that way, but recently I think it‘s swinging even more in the direction that people are taking more time in considering on if they want to get married at all. People seem to be getting married later and later 1w
Sargar114 @AmyG totally!!! 1w
Jess861 @Sargar114 Good point! 1w
Librarybelle Divorce has such a stigma, even during the 1960s. It is such a shame that in Charlotte's case, she knows her only action is leaving. 1w
Hooked_on_books I totally agree with @AmyG . This was also an era in which men could beat and rape their wives and it was socially acceptable for him to do so while being an embarrassment for her. Thank goodness that‘s improved! 5d

Sargar114 Interesting. I like Seraphine, then again, I like powerful female characters. She clearly is painted as such. The neck that turns the head where it needs to. Looks like an interesting read the book suggestion! (edited) 1w
Jess861 I am intrigued with Seraphine. Can't wait to see where the author goes with her character. 1w
AmyG @Jess861 I was intrigued by her too. So much of this story to still learn. 1w

Mitch She is interesting - i liked the women we've met so far...all really powerful, individual and real. I think the author has done a great job of creating characters quickly that feel real. 1w
Librarybelle Seraphine does seem interesting, with her way to manipulate all of these mobsters to do Carlos' bidding. I wonder if we will learn more about her... 1w
Mdargusch I agree @Mitch - I‘m loving the powerful and brave woman so far. 1w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Librarybelle I hope so!! I‘m interested to learn more about her!! 1w

What do you think of Charlotte?
How she was raised ?
Are girls raised to be submissive ?
Does this set them up for abusive situations ?
Can you believe she ran?
Is the original girl before her life changed fighting to get out?

Sargar114 I like Charlotte. She feels very real to me, was adventurous at one time but when her father died her mother raised her to societal norms, which she succumbed to but after the assasination and her confrontation of Dooley, she saw it would get worse before it got better. Was it the right choice, I don‘t know, but it‘s clear she wanted something better for herself and her family. 1w
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 I like her too, I‘m thinking there‘s a ton of strength in her. 1w
Sargar114 @TheBookHippie I keep wondering about Dooley‘s parents and if they gave her the money thinking she‘d run or how heartbroken they will be with their grandkids taken away 1w
See All 17 Comments
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 I‘m wondering if they‘ll appear again too? 1w
Jess861 Sounds like she was more of a tom boy growing up but her mom really pushed her to conform with the social norms of the time. I think she ran for her kids and to show them that girls can be more than just housewives. Back in this time frame girls were raised to be submissive and due to this they had more of a chance of finding themselves in an abusive situation without a way out. But times were also changing around this time. 1w
Jess861 @Sargar114 @TheBookHippie I also found myself wondering if Dooley's parents will make anymore appearances throughout the book. They seem like they were nice people and will just be crushed that their grand kids are no longer in the same town as them. 1w
AmyG I like her. I believe she is a woman of the times she was raised in. She did what was expected of her and I think would have stayed and dealt with it all if her husband was not a drunk and successful. I am thinking she acted on impulse, yet it was something she mulled over for a while. To save her girls and herself. What did she have to lose? I agree, the in-laws may come back into the story...perhaps being “on her side” of things. 1w
Mitch @AmyG Totally agree - I think this was a really impulsive action - aided by the grandparents ( although they will no doubt be devastated - im wondering if a small part of them knew this might be one possible consequence of giving her the money). 1w
Mitch @AmyG Totally agree - I think this was a really impulsive action - aided by the grandparents ( although they will no doubt be devastated - im wondering if a small part of them knew this might be one possible consequence of giving her the money). 1w
Mitch I like Charlotte's bravery and small acts of defiance - i love that the dog got to sleep on the motel bed - yeah go Charlotte! 1w
CoffeeNBooks I think this was an impulsive action, but I think Charlotte is smart enough and brave enough to make a new start. 1w
Librarybelle Charlotte is interesting, and the character I'm liking most at this point. She made an impulsive decision, knowing that there will be consequences, yet her bravery seems to be saving her and her girls from an ugly situation at home. Dooley may not have been violent at that point, but who's to say what would happen if he continues down the dark path of alcoholism?? 1w
Sargar114 I agree @Librarybelle I think she saw the path they were headed especially when Dooley blatantly refused to admit he had a problem. While it was impulsive, she is strong enough to pull them through. 1w
Mdargusch It definitely surprised me that she ran but the extra money gave her the courage. I‘m sure the grandparents will be devastated. 1w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Librarybelle I agree. I feel like that was just around the corner... 1w
Hooked_on_books I like Charlotte. She chafes against societal norms in the model of Betty Friedan‘s Feminine Mystique housewife (though she does work). And yes, girls were and are raised/socialized to be submissive and subservient. Things have changed a little, but watch parents with small children—they hold tight to the little girls and encourage the little boys to wander and explore. It‘s socialization of gender roles from day 1. 👇🏼 5d
Hooked_on_books There was an interesting study out of Sweden a few years ago looking at 5 year olds. They had lunch with the kids and without being told what to do, the little girls started helping and serving and the boys waited to be served. In one of the most equal countries in the world. This is pure socialization. 5d

What do you think of Frank Guidry so far? Typical mobster? Is there a heart in there?

Sargar114 I get the feeling we‘ll find out he actually has a heart, but definitely being introduced as a typical monster. I‘m not sure my take on him yet, so far meh 🤷🏼‍♀️ 1w
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 🤷🏽‍♀️ I‘m in the same place. Thinking I may end up liking him😬 1w
Sargar114 Monster is supposed to be mobster 😂🤣😂🤣. But still kinda works! I agree @TheBookHippie 1w
See All 15 Comments
RachelAmphlett Yeah, I‘m not sure yet - he‘s a survivor, given how long he‘s lasted in his line of work, but I‘m not sure yet about what form his (possible) retribution might take. 1w
TheBookHippie @RachelAmphlett I‘m anxious to read the next section ! 1w
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 🤪🙌🏻 ha! I agree! 1w
Jess861 No heart so far but I also have a feeling that he might have one later on in the book. He is a well written unlikable character though because I don't mind reading about him even though he isn't likeable as of right now. 1w
TheBookHippie @Jess861 He is really well written. I do think we‘re going to like him. 1w
AmyG No opinion yet. He seems like he is very smart and out for himself...trying to save himself. I read a blurb on this book and I am thinking we will learn more about who he really is. 1w
Mitch At the moment I think he's super unlikeable - a well written mobster / monster! However, I get the feeling we need to dislike him, in order for his full character arc to rise as the story stands meet-up 1w
CoffeeNBooks So far, he seems like an unlikable mobster, so I'm curious to see where his story goes. 1w
Librarybelle I really have no feelings for him so far, except that he seems to be the typical mobster character. You know something has to happen - he was smart enough to know he's in danger. 1w
Mdargusch I agree @Jess861 - I definitely think we will end up liking him. 🤞🏼 1w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @AmyG I agree... he‘s definitely out for number 1!! 1w
Hooked_on_books He is so despicable in the first chapter that I almost wanted to stop reading. But he‘s fleshing out into an intelligent, interesting person, if still reprehensible. 5d

#BOTMBUDDYREAD #1

What are your thoughts on the Kennedy assassination ?
Conspiracy ? The mob? Lone gun man? What were you taught in school if anything?

Sargar114 So I came across a theory a few years ago and it was basically a stray bullet from an accidental fire from a secret service agent and then the rest is cover up and it has a lot of convincing arguments. So that‘s my go to...either that or the lone gunman. 1w
AmyG I haven‘t done much reading on this, so I don‘t have much of an opinion. Other than...do I think it was a lone gunman? No. 1w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I haven‘t done much research either, but I‘m thinking the mob... 1w

Mitch @AmyG Agreed Amy... im not a huge conspiracy theorist - i tend to be a trusting soul (for better or worse!) but things are never simple and usually small things are part of a bigger web! 1w
CoffeeNBooks I think there's more to it than just a lone gunman, but I don't really have any theories. 1w
Librarybelle Funnily, I had an English professor who had the class read a book on the Kennedy assassination and write a paper about our personal theories (remember...I said English professor, NOT history professor). He then proceeded to tell the class that he knows what happened, but the FBI and CIA are out to get him, so he can't share his theories! I think there's a coverup somewhere, but we'll never know the truth. And, there was more than 1 gunman. 1w
TheBookHippie @Librarybelle oh my word!!! Fascinating . My parents told me growing up that the mob killed him and Bobby and Marilyn Monroe. My dad thinks JFK jrs plane was fixed to crash by the mob. 😱 1w
Mdargusch I had never heard that all those people were killed by the mob! @TheBookHippie but the assassination definitely feels like there‘s more to it than we‘ve been told. I liked how this book gave another theory about how it might have happened. 1w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @TheBookHippie hmmm that‘s very interesting... I remember watching all of the coverage on that 😓 1w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Librarybelle wow!!! That‘s crazy!! 😳😳 1w
Hooked_on_books I‘ve finished the first section of chapters, so I thought I‘d peek at the questions. I think if there had been a cover up about a presidential assassination on US soil that enough people would know about it that something credible would have leaked by now. After all, look how little time elapsed before we knew who killed Bin Laden when they originally said they wouldn‘t say. 5d

#botmbuddyread #NovemberRoad
I am going on a family drive/hike so I will not be available for discussion today. I will check in later. So far the characters are well done, each unique in their own way. Atmosphere of New Orleans mesmerizing. Throw in a possible connection to Kennedy‘s assassination, and a woman looking for more than her small town life, and you have a compelling mix.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I‘m enjoying it!!! Enjoy your day!! 💗 1w

Picked up a few books for the little guy with his birthday coming up and in an attempt to get him excited for the new baby in the new year. Of course this meant I needed to pick up a few books for myself as well. I think I will try to join a few conversations on November Road when I can (not sure if I'll have the time but I'll try).
