Day 21 of the #Fallisbooked challenge by @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks and @OriginalCyn620

#tricks makes me think of magic which makes me think of the Kate Daniels series which makes me think of one of the greatest introductions for a character ever in an urban fantasy series, when Kate met Curran!

CURRAN - “What kind of a woman greets the Beast Lord with ‘here, kitty, kitty‘?”
KATE - “One of a kind.”

😹😹😹

I really liked this first book introducing us to this new magical world. When magic is up, technology is down. There is someone or something out there killing people and killed Kate‘s mentor. I really liked Kate, she‘s very badass. She makes a lot of people and makes enemies. I‘ll definitely try to continue this series on audio!

Alright, I‘m calling it. I didn‘t get a lot of reading done this weekend, but I finished 1 book and only have 2 hours left in my audiobook.

Saturday I felt like death and couldn‘t focus on reading, but listened to some of my audio. Today, I listened to my audio for a while during my errands.

I think I‘m just so exhausted on the weekends, I just want to watch tv and give my mind a rest 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thank you for this #Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView

1. I have never listened to an audiobook! 😳 A friend of mine highly recommended the “Kate Daniels” series on audiobook, so “Magic Bites” will be the first one I try!

2. As a gamer, I feel there aren‘t enough female protagonists, so when I play video games where you choose your character‘s gender, I almost always play as a woman. I‘ve been a female Jedi, a female dark elf, and a female crime boss!

Meaw_catlady I love being a female orc in Skyrim I think they are beautiful! 🖤 3mo

“Just what exactly in my track record gives you the idea that I‘m a nice person?”

People often tell me that I‘m not as nice as I seem - which usually just means I don‘t let them walk all over me.

I love Kate Daniels. Definitely time to reread the series.

Reread this to fit a SRP prompt, and still enjoyed it. I hadn‘t read this since it was new, so it was a nice reminder of why I love this series. They do get better, though.

Reading in the pit has gotten me some extra time, but only for things that don‘t require much concentration. Need to listen for my cues and be able to read in snips. But for the next five days I‘m off and can read more carefully!

Day 18 - Ugly Covers

I love these books by Ilona Andrews, but the covers are pretty terrible.

#30junebooks

wanderinglynn Yes! Especially the Burn for Me one, which looks like it‘s a trashy, cheap romance, but it‘s so much more. I love Ilona‘s books, but these definitely need a cover overhaul! 5mo
annahenke Agreed. The covers have kept me from reading these. 5mo
ravenlee I actually have always liked the covers, although I prefer the original model for the Kate Daniels series. But when the series started the covers were kind of unique, and a good way to differentiate this type of fantasy from high fantasy. Now the “badass girl on the cover” is soooo overdone. 5mo

TheLibrarian @ravenlee I don‘t like a lot of high fantasy covers either so maybe that‘s also part of the problem for me. 5mo
ravenlee I was talking specifically about the KD books. I agree that the Hidden Legacy covers are trashy, and don‘t really fit the story. I guess it‘s an Avon thing. At least the Kate covers kind of had something to do with the story. 5mo

If I am being honest, it took me a while to get into this book. It is setup in an odd "time" where magic rolls through and various creatures mix with people. I felt the authors were a little repetitive, but overall good. Kate Daniels is a straight up shit talker, but thankfully she has sword skills to back it up. The characters are all pretty quirky and I blew right though this book after the first few chapters.

When life, responsibility, and adulting become too much I save my favorites for re-reading and they never disappoint:) Kate is independent, stubborn, and a loner in an Atlanta slowly crumbling from technology back into magical madness. She‘s a broke mercenary who suddenly needs to figure out who killed her Guardian. Madness, mayhem, and snarky smart-assedness ensues.

Thought this book would be awesome for #booked2018 for the sword on the cover, but I only got halfway through. I dont think the authors did a good job of explaining the world i was in...halfway though the book I still dont understand anyones powers or WTF is up with the vampires. /sigh

1. My family & my books make me happy!
2. My favorite books involve dystopian chaos & in most of those scenarios, I know that I would meet a speedy (& probably grisly) death. So I‘m going with the Magic Bites series where they have magic & fantastic creatures galore and even more importantly—they have indoor plumbing! And of course, Kate Daniels & I would be bff‘s!

Really enjoyed the first three books in this series. Bad parts: the first book read more like a second book. I think some parts could have used more detail on the type of world it is and how it works. Kate's hidden past was easy to guess, no big reveal. Good parts: I loved the chemistry of the main characters and there were a number of scenes that I could have read over and over. Overall I really liked them and would continued reading the series.

Pretty good urban fantasy - liked it, didn't love it. It took a little too long to get started for me. The last third was entertaining enough that I'm giving it a pick instead of a so-so, and I'll probably read another one. I honestly am mixed on this. The story was good, the different take on the general classes of species was interesting. The development of the key world factor of tech and magic was lacking. It felt like i had picked up a book in the middle of a series, instead of the first one. The first few chapters were tough at times. Given that though, after finishing the book, i probably will give Magic Burns a chance.

3 ⭐️ Still a pick because I've heard from folks that it gets a lot better. I enjoyed this fine - it's pretty classic urban fantasy with all the requisite tropes. I found the lack of explanation about the setting or the magic system frustrating - it seemed that the tech/magic fluctuations happen to conveniently inconvenience the heroine. A bit gorier than my usual UF fare. This series has potential (it's on book 9 now!)
