Lesser Bohemians
Lesser Bohemians | Eimear Mcbride
The breathtaking new novel from Eimear McBride, about an extraordinary, all-consuming love affair Eimear McBride s debut novel A GIRL IS A HALF-FORMED THING was published in 2013 to an avalanche of praise: nominated for a host of literary awards, winner of the Bailey s Women s Prize for Fiction and the inaugural Goldsmith s Prize, declared by Vanity Fair to be "One of the most groundbreaking pieces of literature to come from Ireland, or anywhere, in recent years," McBride s bold, wholly original prose immediately established her as a literary force. Now, she brings her singular voice to an unlikely love story. One night an eighteen-year-old Irish girl, recently arrived in London to attend drama school, meets an older man a well-regarded actor in his own right. While she is naive and thrilled by life in the big city, he is haunted by more than a few demons, and the clamorous relationship that ensues risks undoing them both. A captivating story of passion and innocence, joy and discovery set against the vibrant atmosphere of 1990s London over the course of a single year, THE LESSER BOHEMIANS glows with the eddies and anxieties of growing up, and the transformative intensity of a powerful new love."

Loved this book. So much more than a love story. If the unusual writing style put you off for any reason, can thoroughly recommend the audio, read by the author.

I'm at the start of all of these so not sure which will win...

And Happy birthday @kathedron for yesterday! Apologies for lateness, will write soon...

Very well written, and I really loved how it resolved at the end, but bits were so dark, triggering and just awful to think about, it honestly made me feel ill. Idk if it‘s a pick or soso, cause most of the way through I felt I could barely read it and just wanted it to end, but the ending surprised me by being satisfying and cathartic and making it feel worth it. So maybe I do recommend this, but only if you‘re fine with very triggering material

So surprised with how much I liked this but it just took on a life of its own for me. One of those where you think about the characters when you aren‘t reading it and after you‘ve finished it. Very real. There‘s a lot of sex, especially in the first half, but it was never just for the sake of it. It takes a dark turn, just over halfway, that gives more depth to the characters. I think essentially it‘s about love, relationships...👇👇

youneverarrived & how past trauma shapes how you behave. It‘s not a completely original story but the way in which it‘s told is very much so. The only thing I didn‘t really like was the age difference between the characters, but I get it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #booked2019 #irishauthor 5y

The way this is written drew me in from the start. It‘s not the most interesting story but I‘m absolutely loving reading it. And I seen someone today at work that fit the image in my head of what the main male character looks like .. if that doesn‘t make me sound too weird 😂

I wasn‘t a big fan of her other novel so wasn‘t expecting to like this one so much. #booked2019 #irishauthor

rockpools Glad you‘re enjoying this (and no, definitely not weird!!) Not sure if you do audio, but I‘m part-way through this, read by the author, and she‘s the perfect narrator! In all honesty, I think I might struggle with it in print. 5y

youneverarrived @RachelO glad you don‘t think it‘s weird 😂 I actually listened to her other book on audio, she narrated that too, and I agree she is an amazing narrator. I didn‘t like the book but loved the audio because of the way she read it. I thought I might struggle with the print but once you get into the ‘flow‘ of it it‘s like being right in the characters lives, but I can see why it‘s not for everyone. Are you liking it? (edited) 5y
youneverarrived @CarolynM I probably would have kept putting it off if not for this prompt. Glad I chose it though 👍 5y
youneverarrived @BarbaraBB it‘s very similar in some ways but a bit less bleak so far. I wasn‘t really expecting to like it but I think it‘s the writing that I‘m loving more than anything. I listened to the audio of the other book so I‘d be interested to see if I like it any better in print. 5y
youneverarrived @RidgewayGirl agree, definitely not for everyone. 5y
rockpools @youneverarrived I agree with what you‘ve said, really. I‘m enjoying the writing and the experience of listening to it more than the story itself. If it was written in ‘plain English‘ I probably wouldn‘t last that long! 5y

Started a new audiobook this morning, and it could NOT be more different from the last couple I‘ve listened to! It‘s read by the author, which is a huge plus in this case - it‘s almost like a prose poem - I think it needs to be read out loud. In style (not content!) it sort of reminds me of Mink River, which I love.

Really enjoying it so far. And got 2 miles in for #litsywalkers (way better than the rest of this week!) but forgot to take a photo.

#LiteraryLuck day 7 - Ireland

The Lesser Bohemians does not take place in Ireland, but the main character is Irish.
It is a really good book, my second time reading stream of consciousness. I really like the poetic writing, and the way the main character's name isn't even revealed until a particular point in the book, it was done in just the perfect way.
Really underrated book.

Such an erratic book I feel like my heads been in a washing machine 😂

The first half of the book is probably 90% sex so not for the faint hearted and the narrative is pretty tough to get through but I think the second half of the book is worth it.

A very raw story covering some difficult subjects. I had a love/hate relationship with Stephen and thought Eily was too weak at times but she was only 18. Won't give anything away though!

Initially, I put this down after 5 pages. Everything about the narrative seemed designed to shut me out but I found I couldn‘t stop thinking about the story so back I went. I‘m so pleased I did because it‘s a beautiful read and that‘s because of its challenges, not in spite of them. Brutal, honest and utterly compelling, the sense of achievement on finishing is second only to that which I felt on completing Middlemarch or Mrs Dalloway. Persist!

Book 18: Having struggled through A Girl is a Half Formed Thing, I was hesitant for round two. With nods to similar subject material as the first, this tale weaves in more sensuality and emotional growth. With a leading man far too familiar to one who in my own history, McBride captures that breathless and all-encompassing love, nay, compulsion of young love. Stick with the lamguage style - you'll fall into it. #readwomen #baileysprize

This is the first time I've read anything by Eimear McBride. I find her writing style a little disjointed, it reads more like poetry than prose. It's not necessarily a bad thing as it reflects the pace of the book. After all, this is the story of an 18 year old experiencing London for the first time.

Bailedbailed

Oh this was so not the right book to pick up as bedtime reading. To me it feels like reading under strobe lighting, fragmented, lacking meaning, requiring far more brain power than I care to give it in order to find the narrative. I've read other reviews (it's a love it or just don't get it kind of book) and the fans say stuck with it, it's worth it, you'll get used to the prose. I've decided I don't want to get used to it, I'm bailing.

Joanne1 I'd love to know the pitch to the publishers though, how does one get a book like this published. I'm not saying it shouldn't be, but it's got to be aimed at a pretty niche market. Thoughts? 7y
Megabooks Uh oh, I just bought this on book outlet. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻that I'll like it better 7y

I was so nervous this wouldn't live up to my expectations because A Girl is a Half Formed Thing is my favorite book of all time, BUT so far I have loved this. Maybe the most f--ked up love story you'll ever read? 🙈 I recommend the audiobook version; McBride reads it herself, she is a performer first and an author second, and her work often feels designed to be considered more as a series of monologues than as novels.

The Happy Accidents Award goes to the book that surprised me the most. This year's winner is The Lesser Bohemians.
This book tricks you in all the right ways. The narrative style is unlike anything I'd read before. And I didn't think anyone could ever get me to cheer for a 40 year old dating a 20 year old. But McBride gets you so deep into these characters that you cannot help but fall in love with them both.
Absolutely brilliant.

vivjm I checked this book out the library & felt the same way :-( 7y
sarielizbeth This feels like it was translated to English by a novice. Like when you get an instruction booklet and you have to reinterpret the English translation. 7y
Gina Yup I feel like I'm in a car and every few feet the driver is slamming on the breaks 7y

Eimear McBride floored us with her first novel, A GIRL IS A HALF FORMED THING, and didn't let up on the momentum with her most recent, THE LESSER BOHEMIANS. A love story that projects the intensity (for better or for worse) felt by its characters. This, and all other novels in our #2016giftguide are 10% off through December!

If you've read her other book, you're prepared for what you're getting into. The narrative style is difficult at first, but then you'll figure it out and move right along. And this one focuses on trauma and relationships too, making it a little brutal to read at times. It's worth it. I loved A Girl is a Half Formed Thing and this one did not disappoint.
