I am going to digest this a bit longer. I enjoyed the book. It was evocative and descriptive. Very much planting the reader right into the gothic Victorian feel. However. I don't know how to feel about the story as a whole. I felt it went nowhere. Even though the ending was abrupt. Up until that point everything was predictable. I might change to so-so upon further reflection but right now it is a pick.

I really enjoyed this. Brought more to the movie. Now I would love to see he film again to absorb some of the extra details I did not notice before. I am completely ignoring The Cursed Child so this has made me very happy. #newt is my new #HarryPotterBoyfriend

The 3rd novella in a five book series. A loosely inter-related collection. This was a lovely tale of a friendship that spans continents and decades. A sad and heartwarming tale. The novellas are good but I think the strength of the collection is how the stories are individual yet intertwined. Beautiful all round. #australian

I am so far removed from a capital city right now this book seems like a dream. I did enjoy the intersecting stories set in London. Right now I'm in Moree. Remote NSW in Australia.

I feel guilty saying this was so-so. Honestly I think it may be a case of trying to read this book at the wrong time for me. Perhaps I will try after the hub-bub of the festive season has subsided.

Hmmmm. Not sure how to review this. Simply put ok. I just wanted more story less history lesson. Perhaps my expectations were off.

I really enjoyed this, really really enjoyed it.
I have read a couple of Pakistani expat stories this year, this was the funniest.

It read a lot like Bridget Jones, which is not a bad thing. I also read Pride and Prejudice comparisons but I feel this is only through the Bridget Jones style comparisons.
Overall, if you are looking for a fun and easy read for the Summer, this is a good place to start.

DebinHawaii I have this loaded on my Kindle and your review makes me want to move it up my TBR stack. 📚👍 3y

JUST.READ.THIS.BOOK

A legend Australian with a story that was equal parts hilarious, heartbreaking and confronting.

So much more than a Comedienne.

I don't normally read memoirs, but this is fantastic.

Once you are finished, waste an hour watching Magda videos on YouTube. especially Lynne Postlethwaite and Sharon Strzelecki.

Finally when you are done with that watch Magda on Q&A talking about Same-Sex Marriage.

Amazing woman.

Unintentionally my third book set in Africa this month. This time from an Australian experience. A harrowing tale of boy soldiers from South Sudan. Redemption at the end. Deng Thiak Adut recently one NSW Australian of the year. Such a worthy recipient. From boy soldier to human rights lawyer. Read this book. #non-fiction #Australian

Margaret Atwood is such a challenge at times. Like a Simpsons episode. You can read quite superficially and enjoy it. Yet if you look deeper the social commentary is right on point.

Fight Like A Girl | Clementine Ford

such a challenging book.
the message is strong and vital for women to read. More important to understand and change behaviours.
Ms Ford will always stretch boundaries past what is considered decent, but that is precisely the point. Why is it appropriate for a man to be crass and foul mouthed, and not women?
I hope all young women read this book and think,

Do not expect an easy to digest feminist manifesto, but one whose message is important.

EnidBiteEm I hope all men read it too. I will be giving it to my sons when they're older 😀 3y

High-Rise: A Novel | J. G. Ballard
Mehso-so

This may be a book that has not stood the test of time.

The dystopian future portrayed in 1975 is not really a possibility and the crystal ball lens appears blurred from the year 2016.

The styling feels like a nostalgic quaint description from 70s icons such as Aaron Spelling, Sidney Sheldon et al.

Clever premise. Just perhaps, for me, not the classic to have endured the test of time. I felt if you want a 1970s tale. Try Valley of the Dolls.

The Handmaid's Tale | Margaret Atwood
Pickpick

This book was chilling and compelling.
The strangeness of the story yet with so much reference to a possible future. The fact it was written almost 40 years ago does not diminish its impact in anyway. I think it is even more forceful for that.

The narrative style would not suit everyone. Yet I felt the stark structure leant itself to this story.

I feel a bit punch drunk now.

This is such a confronting book of poems. Challenging yet not unreachable.

Some standouts.
Marngrook. (My favourite )
Ghetto Gentry
Mali
Nothing Here Needs Fixing. (Another real favourite. )
Show Me a Girl at Five. (Ode to Maya Angelou)

I would not say I loved each poem. But that is not the point. The book as a whole is emotional and confronting.

Read it.
