Anybody have some advice? Bought this used paperback and didn‘t notice until I started reading that the binding is cracked in the middle. The pages are all still held in there but I‘m worried if it keeps falling open where it‘s broken that the pages will fall out eventually. The internet says Elmer‘s glue and pressure will do the trick but I wanted to ask you guys. :)

This book was just what I needed. A childhood adventure, mixed with real-life adult issues (without being too heavy). You know those stories where you're like "oh, i hope these certain things work out this certain way" but then some of the things work out differently, but in a really nice way? It's like that. I read mostly upsetting books... A wholesome tale with a happy ending was exactly what i needed before spooktober haha.

Suet624 Felt exactly the same way about this book. I wasn‘t expecting a lot and it was a pleasant surprise. 9mo
mrsh62010 @Suet624 Yes, I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. There were whole chapters I wanted to share but that's too much for a litsy post haha 9mo

Ok I made it through the first section and barely into the second. I decided the writing in this book is not something I have to force myself to comprehend right now. Too many old/colloquial words I guess. I'm already fighting off distractions every time I read, so it's just not working out. I'd like to try again at another time, and I'm interested in trying Bone Clocks if it's a bit easier to read, but I'm gonna go ahead and move on for now.

TrishB The Bone Clocks is a LOT easier to read!! 10mo
Oryx I had to try three times with this book before I got past the second section. It was worth it in the end, but the first bit was a struggle. 10mo
mrsh62010 @TrishB @Oryx thank you for the encouragement! 10mo
zsuzsanna_reads I agree with @oryxI , some bits are a lot less interesting than others, especially the first one. I should reread this, all I remember about it is that it had a trick structure. Have you seen the movie? It's on my Netflix to watch list. 8mo

This is my 4th Haruki Murakami book. None of them have made sense. All of them have stuck with me for a long time after reading and left me with a desire to reread in the future. The feelings these books give you linger like a weird dream that you'd like to figure out but probably can't. I love his writing style and his unique perspective. I highly recommend literally anything by this guy.

Next up! I just picked this up from the library based on a recommendation from a Haruki Murakami fan group. This guy David Mitchell is inspired by Murakami's writing and I'm excited to check him out. My boyfriend just told me this was made into a movie too! So we're going to watch the movie after I finish reading it. :)

vivastory I haven't seen the movie, I've heard mixed things about it. The book is definitely polarizing, people either love it or hate it. I thought it was brilliant. Is this your first David Mitchell? If you haven't read it yet, Slade House would make a great fall read. 10mo

A little bit of reading time with my pup before meeting my dad for lunch... Our relationship is very strained, and all he wants to talk about is his political beliefs (he's desperately seeking acceptance from me, his socialist daughter, of his pro-Trump beliefs... Not gonna happen...) So I want to have a dad, but he's making it difficult. I'd much rather agree to disagree and talk about literature or philosophy or food or work like we used to.

Kayla.Adriena Aww at least you're trying. My relationship with my dad has become distant in my late twenties and it makes me sad. So I can relate to your post. Hope your lunch went well! 11mo
mrsh62010 @Kayla.Adriena Thank you so much. It was difficult, but today I got more of a sense that he's working toward having a relationship with me despite our differences and he is working harder at finding common ground than arguing points. He consistently crosses boundaries, i can tell him directly that I'd rather change the subject and he goes on regardless. But I can tell he's trying :/ 11mo
Kayla.Adriena I feel for you! Hope your relationship continues to improve. We need our dads no matter how old we get, I wish mine realized that 😥 11mo

mrsh62010 @Kayla.Adriena I hope your relationship can improve as well. Both parties have to work really hard to bridge big divides. Some people just don't have it in them and are more comfortable separating from family. I'm lucky that we're both at least trying. We're both too stubborn to just give up haha... But I do often wonder if I should, for my own sanity... 11mo
Kayla.Adriena I should give my dad credit as well, he has young children again and has a busy life. I'm all grown up and independent... probably doesn't help that I'm passive aggressive and he doesn't know how I feel 11mo
Kayla.Adriena I'm sorry this has turned into a heavy topic on a lovely photo of you reading with your fur baby on what is supposed to be a primarily bookish platform. Anyway thanks for the dialogue! 11mo
mrsh62010 @Kayla.Adriena It's a people platform I think more than anything. What I posted wasn't about the book, it was just on my mind. You're more than welcome to open up around me. That goes for everybody. 11mo
Kayla.Adriena A "people platform" I love that! It's why I joined, I'm looking for connection ☺️ 11mo
mrsh62010 @Kayla.Adriena I think you'll find what you're looking for on litsy. There's so many book swaps and pen pal type things being organized all the time. I have very few irl friends who like reading at all, so I definitely needed an outlet for sharing my favorite hobby. Nice to meet you. :) 11mo

I'm gonna abandon that 2nd-in-a-row autobiography I've been reading, in favor of some fiction by my (probably) favorite author, so that I'll actually want to pick up a book again.

I want to find my niche in non fiction books. I love learning, but autobiographies are not appealing to me. I think, in general, the kind of person who is inclined to write an autobiography is just a little too self absorbed for me to enjoy their writing.

Is anyone else wondering if this woman is a complete narcissist? She never mentions caring for or loving anyone but herself. Everything she does so far is completely selfishly motivated. Like, i understand an Iranian woman having to stand up for herself and defend herself (that's why i wanted to read it) but she never describes feeling any type of affection for siblings, parents, husband, child, friends, etc. Maybe it's just her writing style?
