My favorite film of all time. Loved the book, too, but it's not my #1.

This is Hammett‘s classic, noir, crime novel with his quintessential hard-boiled private detective, Sam Spade (played by Bogart in the movie). The book is smart and well written but be prepared for a ‘male gaze‘ treatment of women who are seemingly either femme fatales or angels.
This was enjoyable. I'm not a huge fan of the genre, but this was alright. If dated. 🎧📖 #whodunit #100essentialnovels

1. Dark and gritty, no clear cut good guys/bad guys, usually involves some sort of crime, and rarely has a happy ending.
2. Tagged. Or The Red Harvest. Hammett wrote great noir fiction.

I listened to the theatrical audio version of this short book. It was different and interesting. The theatrics gave it a little umph, and Sandra Oh as one of the narrators was also pretty cool, but it was still just so-so

QOTD- What are your thoughts on the Noir genre?
Hammett is very much like his mystery genre counter, Agatha Christie, in that their characterization is economical but rarely deep. If you love Christie's writing style than you'll probably love this, but for me, the mystery wasn't quite compelling enough to make up for it.
P.S. click the link in my bio to read my short story 'Pot O' Gold' a tale about a young boy and a crotchety Leprechaun.
Whilst I enjoyed this book, it‘s very much ‘of it‘s time‘ - by which I mean rather sexist!
I didn‘t love the writing style - very short staccato sentences, but some of the descriptive passages were lovely.
Having said that, it did make me keep reading, desperate to find out what happened at the end.

Only 3 more to go now.... feminism, fantasy and 18th century.
I put my back out this morning, whilst putting my trousers on... 😬that‘s my excuse for spending the rest of the day on the sofa and I‘m sticking to it!
Hope to finish the tagged book shortly, and the maybe make a start on The Remains of the Day. I do feel like something a bit more contemporary though, but I have my Kindle handily nearby if I can‘t waddle to the bookshelf. (I am actually walking like a duck! 🦆)
I‘ve been to the library - yay! (wearing my lovely squirrel mask, courtesy of @Caroline2 )
As you can see, it was very quiet. It all felt very safe, with a one-way system and labels to put out if you sat down so that they could clean the chair.
Difficult to browse, as anything you touched but didn‘t take, had to be put on a quarantine shelf so, the tagged book I knew I wanted for #jennyis30, and the other two have been on my radar for a while.
I loaned the tagged book to my dad. My parents‘ puppy enjoyed the book yesterday.

A noir classic, in which PI Sam Spade contends with several murders, a missing bird statue, and at least one woman with questionable morals.
The first thing you need to know about The Maltese Falcon is that it is told from a fly-on-the-wall perspective. Hammett doesn‘t describe (or even hint at) any of the characters‘ internal worlds, thoughts, or feelings. It‘s up to the reader to guess for themselves each character‘s motivations and secrets, based purely on his descriptions of what they say and do. It is not often I enjoy a tale and dislike all of the characters. This is one. People are not always likable. They can be a part of an interesting story just the same.
I gave it 4 stars on goodreads.

Started reading for Dewey‘s 24 Hour #readathon this morning by finishing this classic crime novel set in 1930 San Francisco. #deweyoct #LibraryEBook

7-10-19: While reading my father‘s copy of The Maltese Falcon, there was a knock on the door and I found 10 blue packages from the library waiting for me! It feels like my birthday! 📚🎉💖📚
I liked this much more than I expected! At under 200 pages it‘s a quick read. And it isn‘t nearly as misogynistic as I was expecting from a hard-boiled detective novel 🤣. San Francisco Private detective Sam Spade figures out the various players in the search for/theft of the Maltese Falcon. #1001books #1000books
What an absolutely excellent description! I love when a passage just packs that little umph! that sets it apart.

This book reminded me why I write suspense/thrillers. Loved it! How about you? #classic #amreading #amwriting
1. Not really
2. The Maltese Falcon - Dashiell Hammett
3. Night owl, usually up to 2 or 3 in the morning, reading of course.

Just noticed that when rearranging shelves, I put my cute little owl figurine right in front of The Maltese Falcon. The falcon looks so angry about it 😂😂
Great audio adaptation. Like a radio play. (Made so much more sense than the movie.)
One of those books you read because so many others spun off from the genre. It was impossible to take seriously, but a fun quick read. #100essentialnovels

It‘s calm enough this morning to read a paper book outside, so I‘m starting this one of the #100essentialnovels.
Heading to the ER to see what's going on with my leg. Figured I'll take this along so I can get it shipped out to @Dempsey eventually.

I‘m a little over halfway, Ladies!! Also, because Amazon hates me and they screwed up one of my packages, I‘m going to mail your goodies to you to coincide with when you get my book! 😄😄😄
P.S. So far, this is good! I have no clue what‘s going on and the women are totally the stereotypes for women in 1920s/30s noir! 😊

When one of the books you're reading was written in 1929 and someone is described like he's Uncle Pennybags, but his net worth is roughly the value of your house, and you can't fathom what that would be in today's money (according to saving.com, $200,000 in 1929 would be about $2,883,321.64 today).
Getting around to another classic. I've been craving mysteries more lately, I think. I don't have many on my TBR pile, though.
What a great read 👍 Sam Spade had me until the very last page. What a great detective story, full of colourful characters, mysterious murders, and intrigue 😊 I‘ll for sure be purchasing more titles by Dashiell Hammett 😊
Current before bed must read 🙂 I purchased a copy years ago and I‘m finally digging in to this classic. So far so good 👍
Starting this old classic this weekend.

Wow - I liked this as an audiobook soooo much better than I liked reading it.
I gave it another go for 192019, & because it was on sale on Audible. I‘m so glad I did. The narration really brought this to life for me. Now I have to find more #noir for audiobooks. Suggestions?
Everyone wants to get their hands on this. #readingresolutions #greed
