The first full-length mystery starring Miss Marple is a bit hit & miss for me. The main issue for me was that the book was told from the POV of an extremely boring character: the local vicar. Both he & his younger wife (& some of the other characters) were extremely rude about the older women of the village & it felt really uncalled for. Then I realised that Christie was showing us the disdain & dismissal that older women are viewed with.

OutsmartYourShelf The idea of a kindly looking octogenarian having one of the sharpest crime-solving brains & confounding everyone around her is brilliant, especially when they realise that they have to start taking her seriously.

I'm not sure whether Miss Marple is one of those characters (like Inspector Morse) that just seems to translate much better onscreen than in the original books. This one just scrapes a 'Pick' rating at 3.5🌟

I‘ve decided to reread all of Agatha Christie‘s novels starting with Marple. It‘s been years since I read some of them that I can‘t remember them all. I always enjoy a Christie although Poirot is my favourite and I‘m not as keen on the Tommy and Tuppence books

The first Miss Marple book (although GR has it listed as book 2). I wouldn‘t call Miss Marple the main character of this book, but she does solve the mystery. Not much more to say that hasn‘t already been said about the book…

I love Miss Marple! She‘s eccentric, she‘s observant, she‘s just wonderful. I look forward to reading more Miss Marple books.

So, I switched back from Pratchett to Christie. Seems to be a good system for my commute - moving back and forth from Discworld to the world of murders.
I didn‘t know that Miss Marple actually doesn‘t take up a main character‘s position in the first novel. I hope this changed in the following novels.

Ruthiella Miss Marple is always a bit hidden in the novels. She‘s typically underestimated at first… 9mo
MariaW @Ruthiella I never knew, just watched the movies and obviously she the main character there. But is interesting to see/hear her from an outside point of view. 9mo

I sincerely hope the Miss Marple books come to more closely resemble the collection of short stories with the same character, as I enjoyed that collection much more than this.
Perhaps the formula suffers in trying to make it novel length. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality The drawn out nature of setting up the mystery and gathering clues, the impressive amount of tiresome if not downright unlikeable characters who can't get to the point, the rampant classism in discussion of servants and the poor, the police force who, instead of being congenial or full of harmless bluster, are repeatedly misogynistic and ageist in their estimations on the faculties of women and especially little old ladies... 2/? 10mo
Robotswithpersonality Elderly women who do themselves no favour, or are characterized poorly, in transparently having nothing better to do than spread gossip and get in other people's business, whilst the young women all seem to fall into the trap of acting like vapid, callous twits at one point or another. 3/? 10mo
Robotswithpersonality Not even Miss Marple escapes a negative cast by a certain lurid fascination with the mystery at hand, though certainly more of her would have been better than following the vicar around. I wonder how much Agatha Christie was confined to the formulae and popular attitudes of the day. I think a publication from 1930 may be hampering my judgement - if this wasn't so gratingly historical in attitude, I might judge it better. 4/5 10mo
Robotswithpersonality I have not given up on this author or this series, but the next Marple book may determine whether I take a break and give a Hercule Poirot book a try. 5/5 10mo

I always enjoyed Agatha Christie cozy mysteries. There was a murder in this small town and everyone has an opinion of what happened. As the vicar said “The whole village of St Mary Mead probably knows exactly where you keep your toothbrush and what kind of tooth powder you use...if you change your shaving cream it will be a topic of conversation”🤣Miss Marple, who they said past her time looking through the window😳will discover the mystery⬇️

Gissy There were so many funny parts in this novel. But I also found various pejorative comments against women🙁I count at least 7😐Besides those comments, that I can ignored because it was “a silly woman” who resolved the mystery👍 I really enjoyed the novel. 3/3.5⭐️

Yes I loved this mystery! And I actually have never read Agatha Christie before- (except And Then There Were None) but this was charming, similar to a cozy, humor and intrigue. Another example that English villages are rather deadly places- so glad this was picked for the #goldenagecrimeclub kickoff

Like an afternoon spent with an old friend, catching up and hearing all the news of the village. Such a treat. And, I remembered very little. I love Miss Marple and her debut here is so good. Plus, the Vicar's narration is particularly delightful. Looking forward to chatting about it with #goldenagecrimeclub tomorrow. Also, marveling about how so many mysteries that came after echo bits of this.

LiteraryinLawrence I completely relate to what you‘re saying!! I‘m doing some Agatha rereads right now, including the tagged book, and it‘s just so familiar and wonderful to hear from these characters again. And I also rarely remember too much about the book, so I can experience it afresh. 💗 14mo

Like @TheAromaofBooks said, I've read this multiple times but I'm always surprised anew by the outcome. I'm not sure what this means—but for me it's super fun to find that the Christie books tend to be mysteries that keep on giving. Great period detail about an English village & how it views women/spinsters/elderly ladies, which means certain troubling elements, as well. I appreciate the sharp wit & the vicar's POV. #GoldenAgeCrimeClub @Mitch

I'm always happy for an excuse to revisit any of Christie's books, so even though I have read this one several times, when I saw it was January's pick for the #GoldenAgeCrimeClub I was happy to reread!! I never seem to remember how this one is going to turn out. The red herrings are laid so well. I absolutely love the vicar and his wife as well, and despite there being quite a few characters, I never felt overwhelmed by them. Miss Marple is ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) always a delight as well. Looking forward to discussing this one!!

Finally read the very first #Marple and it was a delight! At first I thought ‘more Marple, please!‘ but Christie knows her business and it was the perfect build-up in getting to know Jane Marple and how people underestimate her. The vicar as narrator and the intro to the village were perfect. The mystery well done. The surprise was the wit and humor in the dialogue. Such a good read!

This is Agatha‘s first Mis Marple Mystery story. As you can tell as she is barely in the story besides being said to be the cooth who lives next door to the murder location. No, I still didn‘t guess the murder, but it was slow going for me. Very misleading and round about. Generalizations galore. Enjoyable, as all her books are though. Interesting point of view being from the vicar himself - was his place the murder was done. #AgathaChristie

I found this mystery delightful! Miss Marple is a dear and I love the relationship between Len and Griselda. I feel like Christie found something of her stride with writing characters in this one. I mean, sure, they're still types, but they seem more 3-dimensional than usual with her books. I also appreciate the vicar as narrator; his profession gives him an excuse to hear from so many different characters.

Ruthiella Miss Marple is my favorite Christie sleuth. I wish there were more novels featuring her! 3y

I hate to give a Christie crime a so-so rating, but I guess I was expecting more. The first Miss Marple mystery and she‘s hardly in at all, she‘s not a side character either. She‘s mostly referred to as an old lady in the neighborhood that knows everything. I hope there is more Miss Marple in the other Miss Marple books.

Scochrane26 She is more present in other books, but the theme of being an old lady who couldn‘t know anything is usually present. There‘s some characters though who are quick to defend her abilities. 3y
