I enjoyed this novel, and not just because of Emilia Fox's interpretation of a southern (US) accent. The characters are complex and realistically cagey, and Miss Marple rocks, as usual. The observations about the differences between US and English culture are interesting. I can't judge how accurate the English side is, but Christie basically suggests that United Statesians don't mind shameless self-promotion, and I can't say she's wrong.

I only started reading Christie in the last few years. This year, I'm reading through the Miss Marple series with a friend.

This is book 5 in the series and one of the stronger ones, in my opinion. Marple is a part of the story from page one, which I love because she's such a great character. The mystery had several layers to it, making it a bit more complex than previous books.

Overall, I had a wonderful time at Stoneygates with Miss Marple.

Yesterday I was here, and today I'm back home, doing dishes while listening to the tagged book (with cats staring at me wondering why I'm not sitting and petting them indefinitely after being away for a week).

ImperfectCJ @wanderinglynn @Suet624 @dabbe Thanks! It's Zion NP, and even in person it looked like a painting or something. The river was really muddy the day before, but it cleared up a lot overnight 1w

#bakerstreetirregulars this is the mural mentioned when they ended up in Asbury Park chasing that motorcycle. The murals at the boardwalk in Asbury Park are stunning, a way to cover up the fact that they are still trying to bring back the beauty of the buildings, it‘s taking a little longer than they hoped, I think. They made huge improvements, but they had a huge project ahead of them!

Ladygodiva7 That is beautiful!!! 2w
Velvetfur That's such lovely artwork! Where in the world is this? ☺️ 2w
BarkingMadRead @Velvetfur it‘s at the boardwalk in Asbury Park, NJ 2w

BarkingMadRead @emz711 me too! It‘s a buddy read group that @StayCurious and @CatLass007 started. This was our first read, and now we are reading 5d
CatLass007 @emz711 Would you like to be added to the tag list for #BakerStreetIrregulars? Every other month we read a book that is an homage to Sherlock Holmes in some way. On the other months, we read historical mysteries. 5d
CatLass007 I lived in Manhattan for several years but only visited New Jersey a couple of times. I never made it to Asbury Park and when I see this mural I‘m sorry not to have done so. 5d

#BakerStreetIrregulars Our March read was the new book by James Patterson and Brian Sitts, a fast paced detective story that paid tribute to three famous literary characters, Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple, and Poe‘s early detective Auguste Dupin. While the short chapters and quick dialogue made for an entertaining read, we felt that these authors may have tried to fit more into this book than they should have. There was…a lot going on. ⬇️

StayCurious Do you feel they would have been better served focusing more on one main case or did you appreciate each character having their own focus? Did you appreciate the homage paid to these literary juggernauts or do you think the book relied too heavily on their familiarity to pull in readers? 2w
StayCurious Which detective was your favourite?

Did you like the fast pace of the book and the quick, short chapters? Or did it give you whiplash?

BarkingMadRead I enjoyed this book! I liked the homage for sure, Marple was my fave. The short chapters could downtimes be too short, but I didn‘t mind too much! They maybe could have had less cases, but I‘m guessing that‘s what life as a PI is like. I‘m posting a pic of the mural they saw in Asbury Park, it‘s one of my fave places to visit. I miss it, we‘ve been in SC for 8 years, and I miss the smell of the ocean! 2w
dabbe Overall, I enjoyed the fast pace of this mystery read. I found I wanted to learn more about the 3 PIs and their supposedly lurid past. This definitely has SERIES written all over it. A more engrossing read on perhaps one intense case that could have offshoots or red herrings would have appealed to me more. The character of Poe is least like his true namesake IMHO. 2w
DGRachel As a general rule, I‘m a fan of short chapters, they make it easier for me to convince myself to read one more chapter at bedtime and end up reading a lot more. 😂 That said, the 1/3 of the book I read felt all over the place, like the authors just tried to do too much and ended up doing none of it well. 2w
LiseWorks This is James Patterson's style with the short chapters so I'm used to it. There was a lot going on. I loved Holmes the best. 2w
Read4life I enjoyed this one. I liked the short chapters and felt like the offshoots were to establish the strengths and demons of the three main characters. Holmes was my favorite but I liked the dynamic these three have. 2w
TheAromaofBooks I overall did like this one. Like @DGRachel I usually like short chapters, but here we were bouncing around so much that it sometimes felt chaotic and whiplash-y. If this ends up being the first book in a series, I think I'll like it more, if that makes sense haha A lot of this felt kind of like “we're introducing a bunch of characters who will be more developed later on“. Still, it was a fun read and the first time I've read James Patterson!! 2w

#unpopularopinion I do not care for the writing at all. It‘s tedious and I am not connecting with any of the characters. I should want their backstories, I should care about the solutions to the various cases, but I don‘t. The prose is just not engaging. It could be my current headspace or the fact that I‘m not a big Patterson fan 🤷🏻‍♀️. #bakerstreetirregulars

rubyslippersreads I‘m not a Patterson fan either. The title is great, though. 2w
dabbe #hailthebail! 🤩🤩🤩 2w
RamsFan1963 I like the premise, but I've always thought Patterson was a total hack so I know I wouldn't like it. 2w

DGRachel @RamsFan1963 🤣🤣 I‘ve only read the first of his women‘s murder club books and one or two of the Alex Cross series more than 20 years ago. He‘s clearly not an author for me. 2w
StayCurious I didn‘t really like it either lol - I felt it was uninspiring 2w
Graciouswarriorprincess Glad to know and since it‘s due tomorrow, I will probably just return it. 2w

#BakerStreetIrregulars #ReadAway2024 And I‘m going to add #SeriesLove2024 because I suspect it‘s the beginning of a new series. I enjoyed this very much. There‘s so much of the background of the three title characters and Helene left to learn. And of course, mysteries to solve.

TheSpineView 😎 Glad to have you! 3w
