The Plague of Doves
The Plague of Doves | Louise Erdrich
The unsolved murder of a farm family still haunts the white small town of Pluto, North Dakota, generations after the vengeance exacted and the distortions of fact transformed the lives of Ojibwe living on the nearby reservation.Part Ojibwe, part white, Evelina Harp is an ambitious young girl prone to falling hopelessly in love. Mooshum, Evelina's grandfather, is a repository of family and tribal history with an all-too-intimate knowledge of the violent past. And Judge Antone Bazil Coutts, who bears witness, understands the weight of historical injustice better than anyone. Through the distinct and winning voices of three unforgettable narrators, the collective stories of two interwoven communities ultimately come together to reveal a final wrenching truth.

Again, she does such a beautiful job of telling stories about ordinary people in places familiar to her and her readers. Deftly told multigenerational community stories - not all is revealed, but the ending is satisfying.

Ending my month of Erdrich on a high note. This book is comprised of interconnected stories centered around the unsolved murder of a family with a baby the only survivor. The ramifications start swiftly with misplaced vigilante violence and don‘t stop impacting lives for decades. The superbly drawn characters, intricate plotting, and breadth of emotions I felt while reading make this a new favorite of her books.

Cinfhen I tried this on audio and it wasn‘t working for me - I think I need to try again ☺️ 1y

New to me author. I looked up Erdrich as part of #AAM and it was really difficult to select a couple from her vest catalogue. It was pretty difficult getting back into reading reality after so long in fantasy land but I really enjoyed the tagged book.

Told from the POV of several people, the author explores the bonds between strangers and family in a small community in North Dakota over several generations. There‘s a LOT packed in here!

I have a love/hate relationship with novels in stories, but Erdrich once again proves what skill she has to unite stories that tell about the lives of two families across more than 100 years. #AuthorAMonth

A family is shot dead, all but the baby. Erdrich follows the families of the victims, killer, the Native Americans wrongly lynched for the crime, and those doing the lynching. It‘s a symphony of stories that bring out greater truths about life.

Megabooks @Soubhiville I‘m really happy to have an olive edition of this too because I loved it! I knew I was running a risk picking up one more book! 😂🤦🏻‍♀️ #MoreThanOneTimePeriod #Booked2023 @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @alisiakae #USA #ReadingTheAmericas @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle 1y

Megabooks @Soubhiville me too! I think I just chose the wrong book years ago and that set me in the wrong mindset about her. Kind of like reading Manhattan Beach early with Jennifer Egan. Happiness is having a bunch of Louise Erdrich‘s backlist on your TBR! Minus this one now, which was fantastic - such complex and interesting characters/relationships (and now I want to reread The Round House to remember which characters from this reappear in it). I just love the way she writes. Hoping to be motivated by #AuthorAMonth to fit in a few more of her titles this month.

What are your thoughts on the new HP Olive Editions? Overall I'm pleased with them. I own Beasts of No Nation already, but am interested in 4 of these. On sale 9-7, aka Rooney Tuesday:
https://www.harpercollins.com/pages/oliveeditions

marleed They‘re so pretty! 3y
vivastory @marleed Right? I love the ones that I bought from last year's line. They are very affordable too! 3y
Ruthiella The Thrity Umrigar title has been on my list for a while. 3y

vivastory @Ruthiella I have my eye on that one 3y
Liz_M I love the cover for Magpie Murders and so kept it even though I didn't like the book. The black and red designs from that year are arresting. I may need to get Native Son. 3y
vivastory @Liz_M I agree about the red & black designs. Sometime I will post my collection of their series from 2 years ago. They are all in red and black designs! I've been wanting to read more Wright since I read The Man Who Lived Underground earlier this year, so I will definitely be picking up the Wright in this series 3y
DGRachel The red & black year was when I discovered Olive Editions. My only quibble is that they often pick books that are part of a series and they don‘t always pick the first book. I prefer having my series be the same/similar in appearance. As for this year‘s books - they all sound really depressing. I‘m sure they‘re great books, but I bet they‘re hard reads. 3y
vivastory @DGRachel I noticed the issue with the series for the red & black year. That did seem to be a bit of an outlier since that was the yr devoted exclusively to mystery/thriller books, although they did choose the second book in a series for this yr. I have only read 1 book from this year's selections & it was memorable, but grim: Beast of No Nations. (edited) 3y

Louise Erdrich is my favorite author and I think that beautiful Native American literature is best read in nature. As Erdrich painted a breathtaking scene of doves with her words, I looked up just as a gaggle of geese flew from the pond in this picture. If I remember right, the last Erdrich book I read was last winter camping in the mountains of Texas.

Imagine my surprise to find myself sitting in my kitchen at 11:40 at night after furiously rereading different passages from this masterpiece I just finished. Erdrich deftly weaves together stories from three generations of a few families in Pluto, North Dakota, stories that are haunted by the mystery of a horrific crime in the town's history, and an equally appalling vigilante response. Read it immediately!

JazzFeathers Staked it 😊 Though the reason l still haven't read Erdrich is thst a friend if mine, whose literary tastes l share, told me she's quite a confusing author. But l'm intrigued by the mystery... which is the reason why l bought The Round House some times back. I'll come to her, eventually 😊 7y
Izai.Amorim Great lace curtains! 7y
Billypar @JazzFeathers I should clarify something- this is definitely not a mystery in the traditional sense. There's a historical mystery that is referred to by the different narrators but no one is trying to solve it. 7y
Billypar @JazzFeathers The multiple family relationships and timelines can be a little confusing to decipher. I really liked Roundhouse too- that might be better to start with- quicker pace and a more straightforward storyline. 7y

Closer to a pick then a so so. The first half of the book was a bit too disjointed for me. But, after it flowed really well. I liked Round House and LaRose significantly more. I probably would have felt differently if I had read this book before the next two in this restorative justice trilogy. But I did enjoy reading the backstory to some of the characters who appear in Erdich's books.
