Legends & Lattes: A Novel of High Fantasy and Low Stakes
Legends & Lattes: A Novel of High Fantasy and Low Stakes | Travis Baldree
268 posts | 212 read | 9 reading | 93 to read
High Fantasy with a double-shot of self-reinventionWorn out after decades of packing steel and raising hell, Viv the orc barbarian cashes out of the warrior's life with one final score. A forgotten legend, a fabled artifact, and an unreasonable amount of hope lead her to the streets of Thune, where she plans to open the first coffee shop the city has ever seen. However, her dreams of a fresh start pulling shots instead of swinging swords are hardly a sure bet. Old frenemies and Thune's shady underbelly may just upset her plans. To finally build something that will last, Viv will need some new partners and a different kind of resolve.A hot cup of fantasy slice-of-life with a dollop of romantic froth.

This definitely lives up to the hype. It's hard to believe this was the authors 1st book. I did this as a buddy read with my sister and she loved it just as much as I did. I immediately bought us both the sequel which is actually a prequel.

What a fun romp this was! High fantasy meets cozy, with a little romance. Viv is an Orc who is done with the bounty life and is looking to settle down. She wants to open a coffee shop - the first one in the city of Thune. She meets a quirky, lovable cast of characters along the way. Funny, hopeful, sweet. This is fantastic on audio - Travis Baldree is a voice talent turned author and voices his own book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 ❤️📚

I started this one on audio a couple of days ago. I got attached to the characters in the prequel, so I‘m hoping I didn‘t ruin my experience with this book by reading that one first. This one takes place several decades later. It‘s fun so far and the narration is excellent. The author is a voice talent and lends his voice to his own work with these books. ❤️📚🎧

Well, if I‘m not allowed to get up, I may as well finish a book!

I enjoyed this, though I didn‘t love it as much as I hoped. It was a fun, pleasant read. It did hit one of my pet peeves a couple times (it seems all the books I‘m reading right now are doing that). I liked all the characters. I will be reading the prequel.

RaeLovesToRead Hello kitty! I'm curious to know which pet peeve! 😅 3w
Clare-Dragonfly @RaeLovesToRead One I encounter frequently and struggle to describe… it‘s when you‘re in a character‘s POV, and they think or obviously know something, but the reader doesn‘t get to know what that is. Like “suddenly, she knew the answer” but I don‘t get to know the answer for pages, if ever. Some authors pull it off OK (it isn‘t bothering me as much with Becky Chambers), but usually it drives me nuts. 3w
dabbe 🖤🐾🖤 3w
RaeLovesToRead Oh yes! Thriller writers in particular are guilty of this! You're not building tension... spill it! 3w

After reading Bookshops and Bonedust, I had to revisit Viv as she finally finds her purpose and people ☕❤️ I think I enjoyed reading this even more the second time. Plus I hadn't read the bonus prequel yet so that was a fun connector of the two!

I‘ve seen so much love for this book, and though this genre is definitely not my usual read, I had a bit of FOMO. Then, when it was on @LiteraryinLawrence ‘s #AuldLangSpine list, I knew I had to try it. And, I really liked it! Totally not what I was expecting! I loved how Viv rebuilds her life through the cafe. My mouth watered over the treats Thimble bakes.

It was a good story. I liked it that much that I have a library hold on the next book!

monalyisha I was surprised by my fondness for it, too! 2mo

- The strength of the book are the characters, definitely. And I liked the diversity. Especially Thimble!
Atmosphere/Setting: - Nicely done world making and just a hint of magical stuff.
Well written and easy to read. Not much of a plot, but the story moves ahead anyway I did love how the characters come together, despite Viv at times.
• Enjoyment: - Definitely enjoyed it.

I *loved* this coffee & Ratatouille fanfic story! 😅

I kid…except about the loving it part. That part, I‘m serious about.

Seanan McGuire hails Baldree‘s novel as “sweet” & “kind” and she‘s absolutely right. It feels so comforting and hopeful to read about someone who has found — no, *created* — their happy place. It inspires the reader to actively wonder what they might need and what changes they might make in their own life to be so content.

monalyisha What kind of coffee shop lives in your heart? #AuldLangSpine @BarbaraJean 2mo

julesG It's the cozy fantasy book that I recommended the most last year. 2mo
shanaqui This is exaaactly why I liked this one. I didn't love the prequel as much, even though it's the same world, because it's from an earlier point in Viv's life and she's not there yet. It's fun, though! 2mo
monalyisha @shanaqui That‘s helpful to know, actually! It makes total sense but I wasn‘t thinking about it very critically. Maybe I‘ll put the prequel on hold instead of running out immediately to buy it. 😉 2mo
BarbaraJean Somehow I missed seeing this post!! I'm so glad you loved this. I felt the same way--this book was like a hug. And ugggghhhh: “what coffee shop lives in your heart?“ just hits too close to home for me right now! I'm on the verge of a career change and trying to figure out (again) the question of what I want to do with my life. Maybe I need a dose of hope via re-read. 😏 2mo

Drinking coffee while reading Legends & Lattes like…

The sexiest scene on TV in 1998. And ever since. 🔥

But honestly? That first sip? You only get one.

IndoorDame OMG, I happened to rewatch this episode recently and it‘s so true! 2mo
monalyisha @IndoorDame I did a rewatch probably back in 2010 and haven‘t seen it since…but it sticks with you! I‘m so happy someone knew what I was referencing. I was like, “I might be alone in this…” 🙈 Really, it was just a moment of mindfulness, though! I still think about it sometimes when savoring my first cup of the day. Gotta be present with your bean water. 😜 2mo

monalyisha @Amiable I accept your clear lack of irreverence without *too much* judgment. 😉 I‘m a tea Philistine. A cup of Sleepytime some nights is all I need. There is a wonderful business in my area, though! I‘ve bought her stuff a few times and am always pleased to see her at farmers markets, etc. I‘ll link you! 2mo
monalyisha @Amiable Oh! I lied! We camped, one time, on the grounds of this amazing flower and herb farm! I‘ll find them for you, too, just in case you‘re interested in taking tea recommendations from a total novice, lol. (edited) 2mo
Amiable I am always interested in tea shops! Thanks! I‘ve never liked the taste of coffee (sorry, again 😬) and used to be a Lipton-tea-bag-in-a-mug drinker. Then I started going to tea tastings at a local shop —the guy who owns it travels all over the world and knows more about tea than any book I‘ve ever read. He does weekly tastings with themes and different types of teas. This plus the awareness of steeping loose tea leaves changed my world. 2mo
Amiable Here‘s a link to his shop (Savvy Tea Gourmet) in case you ever wanted to do a tasting. He offers online registration too—you sign up and he ships the teas and you drink while watching him explain them. (But in-person is best.) https://drinkgreatteamarketplace.com/ (edited) 2mo

4✨ A really relaxing read that I didn‘t want to put down. I liked that they were building this business from the beginning. While we know what a coffee shop is, these fantasy creatures were discovering it for the first time. It was relaxing to the effect of causing me to space out quite a bit while I listened so I may have missed some things, but overall really excited that I enjoyed it. #SnowedIn @PuddleJumper @Clwojick

I heard this before I read it, but this is really the definition of cozy read. Viv is an orc that tired of her adventures as mercenary and with the use of a lucky stone opens a coffee shop in a city that never heard of coffee. In this fantasy world enough things happen so the day to day of starting a new business in a new city doesn't become boring, but not too much either to feel the coziness of a cup of coffee and a cinnamon roll leave us.

AvidReader25 Loved this one! There‘s a new one (a prequel I think) coming out this week! 4mo

This was a fun, light listen. I love the in-depth world building of high fantasy, but this is not that. It‘s a cosy read about starting over and finding true friendship in a fantasy world built around creatures and concepts with which many readers are already familiar but are never described in detail. It absolutely makes you want to hang out in a coffee shop sipping delicious beverages and eating pastries with your best friends.

This isn‘t a latte, and it‘s not accompanied by one of the amazing baked goods I craved the entire time I read this book, but it is a mocha nut mate tea, so I think that counts for something. Cozy, huggable, delightful—everything I hoped it would be. August #BookSpin complete!
