The Library at Mount Char
The Library at Mount Char | Scott Hawkins
A missing God.A library with the secrets to the universe.A woman too busy to notice her heart slipping away.Carolyn's not so different from the other people around her. She likes guacamole and cigarettes and steak. She knows how to use a phone. Clothes are a bit tricky, but everyone says nice things about her outfit with the Christmas sweater over the gold bicycle shorts. After all, she was a normal American herself once. That was a long time ago, of course. Before her parents died. Before she and the others were taken in by the man they called Father. In the years since then, Carolyn hasn't had a chance to get out much. Instead, she and her adopted siblings have been raised according to Father's ancient customs. They've studied the books in his Library and learned some of the secrets of his power. And sometimes, they've wondered if their cruel tutor might secretly be God.Now, Father is missingperhaps even deadand the Library that holds his secrets stands unguarded. And with it, control over all of creation. As Carolyn gathers the tools she needs for the battle to come, fierce competitors for this prize align against her, all of them with powers that far exceed her own.But Carolyn has accounted for this. And Carolyn has a plan. The only trouble is that in the war to make a new God, she's forgotten to protect the things that make her human.Populated by an unforgettable cast of characters and propelled by a plot that will shock you again and again,The Library at Mount Charis at once horrifying and hilarious, mind-blowingly alien and heartbreakingly human, sweepingly visionary and nail-bitingly thrillingand signals the arrival of a major new voice in fantasy.

I loved this book. I‘m still decompressing from the most amazing ride my mind has ever taken.

“With this particular species of crazy, you stop trying to make things better. You start trying to maximize the bad. You pretend to like it. Eventually you start working to make everything as bad as possible. It‘s an avoidance mechanism.” Jennifer looked Carolyn directly in the eyes. “It can‘t actually work. That‘s why they call it crazy.”

“ Of course, genuine emotion is the very essence of self. It cannot ever be unfelt, cannot be ignored, cannot even be channeled for very long. But, with practice and care, it may be hidden. “

This book is wild, y‘all .....and I‘m into it 👏🏾.

FINALLY finished this weird ass book. It was good, but was hard to follow at first because it just jumps head first into craziness. I wouldn't label it horror per se, but there were some pretty horrific characters and some pretty #gory scenes. 😬 (6pts. 5 for book, 1 for post)

#SoaringScores Not quite the #LibraryofCongress but a uniquely different and interesting library. This was a total #BlameItOnLitsy read 🤓It was whacky and weird and slightly wonderful. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Cranked it up to 2x speed and pushed through. I didn‘t hate it, nor did I like it exactly. Urban fantasy just isn‘t my thing. This story is totally bizarre, confusing, and grotesquely violent. If it had been reined in a bit, the whole might‘ve made more sense. Hidden in the weirdness is an elaborate revenge story, rooted in friendship. My favorite parts were the childhood flashbacks and the badass cover.

Erinreadsthebooks It is a great cover 😍 2mo

Well, we made it to our Up North destination. What this sign should say is "Welcome to Spider Hell." Trying out a new place this year and between the legion of arachnids, sulfuric stench of the water and the soul less gaze of taxidermied animals lining the walls, I am hoping that The Library At Mount Char will be creepier then my real life situation? Thankfully the weather is beautiful and we can spend plenty of time outside. ?

When I saw #Shocking was today‘s prompt in the #30JuneBooks challenge, I immediately knew what book I‘d tag. Refreshingly original with a cast of characters so bizarre they were fascinating. Unfortunately, as much as I liked the first half of the book, by the second half it felt like the author was just trying to outdo himself with the increasing ultra-violence. A good book that could have been a great one if the shock value had been toned down.

LauraJ Great pic! 6mo
DaveGreen7777 Thank you, @LauraJ 😊 6mo
Branwen I love this pic! 😁 I'm still torn about wanting to read this... I checked it out of the library one time but then returned it without reading it because I chickened out! 🤣😂 But I love Stephen King so it can't be worse than his stuff...can it? 🤤😱 6mo
See All 10 Comments
CouronneDhiver It was beyond strange... that‘s for sure! I DNF‘d 🤣🤣 6mo
DaveGreen7777 @Branwen Thanks, Becky! I‘m torn myself about possibly recommending this book to you. On the one hand, some of the writing is so original and almost poetic at times, I think you‘d get a lot out of it, but then other parts are really horrific! 😔 The worst parts are later in the book anyway, maybe you could start it and if it gets to be too much, stop reading when it gets too violent? 🤔 6mo
DaveGreen7777 @CouronneDhiver I totally get that. I‘ve heard stories about interference from editors and publishers hurting an author‘s original vision, but in this case, I think maybe an editor reining in the author and preventing him from getting so carried away would have been a good thing! 6mo

Well . . . it‘s finished. I‘m not 100% sure how I feel about it. The story was fascinating and also way over the top but in the end, I think the ending is what made me decide so-so. I can‘t quite put into words why the ending left me feeling just meh but that‘s what I felt. Definitely an interesting read all in all tho.

DaveGreen7777 I agree with a lot of what you just said! Overall I liked the book, but it really lost something in the third act... what I found most interesting was the different librarians, and when they all got unceremoniously dispatched in one scene (except for David), I just wasn‘t as invested anymore! 😕 7mo
Kaila-ann @DaveGreen7777 agreed. Even the ones that had been Carolyn‘s friends like Jennifer - that seemed harsh. And Steven getting turned it to the sun and her just being ok with it - wasn‘t a fan there either. Overall, I enjoyed the book even tho it‘s not my normal type of read but the ending felt, I dunno, kinda rushed maybe? 🤷🏻‍♀️. (edited) 7mo

This was a roller coaster ride, totally #blameitonLitsy , I‘m not even sure how to categorize this book. Probably horror. Trigger ⚠️ warnings- bad things happen to children. It‘s a pick but it‘s not for everyone. A demon ? decides to raise twelve orphaned kids as his acolytes in what he calls his library. What happens when he goes missing and the twelve are let loose in modern America? Mayhem!

Just a quick question, because I‘m kinda enjoying this, but WHAT AM I READING?!?

Crewgurl Oh I‘ve had this on my list for a while! I hope you like it 😊 9mo

I‘m going to do two “favorites” of the year lists—one for books and one for comics—just because...Read a lot of great books this year but if I had to pick an absolute favorite, the tagged book would be it. I read it early in the year and while other books were as good, nothing was better.

GrilledCheeseSamurai I friggen LOVED Mount Char! ❤️ 11mo
Tonton MtChar is bloody brilliant! 11mo

Pickpick

This wasn't my typical read, and I didn't love it, but it was definitely good, very well thought-out, and well written. The premise of the story was pretty interesting.

Happy #JolabokaflodSwap! My (chocolate) cup runneth over! Thank you, @staci.reads for the lovely card, the gorgeous bookish book and the yummy chocolate. I may share the chocolate with the Hubs, but the Godiva is allllll mine!
Thanks for giving me a great match and hosting the swap, @MaleficentBookDragon ❤❄🍫📚

staci.reads Yay! I'm so glad it got there on time! I was such a slacker not getting it sent sooner! Merry Christmas, and enjoy! 11mo
MidnightBookGirl @staci.reads Oh, if you only knew how much of a procrastinator I was! Honestly, it's probably good I got to open it today instead of having to practice self control! Your gift was the perfect balm to a hectic day! 11mo
