Dark Harvest had all the right vibes but you have to suspend your belief for this one. The author never really explains what‘s happening. And that‘s where I got lost. I want to know why this pumpkin walks around. If the Harvest Guild controls the town with dark magic say that. Spill that spooky gossip. That‘s what I crave. Don‘t just build something up and then just end it. That takes half of the fun away.I would have definitely liked more depth.
A spooky novel where each autumn, all of the young men in a small Midwest town take part in a ritual to hunt a giant pumpkin-headed creature that arises from the corn. The winner gets to leave the town and his family given monetary prizes. But something very dark is behind this tradition…..this sounds like a perfect read for next year‘s Scarathlon. #scarathlonphotochallenge #autumn #blackcatcrew
We just watched the film adaptation of the book, and I really enjoyed it! It's been about 10 years since I read the novel, so it wasn't fresh in my memory. There seems to be a plot hole in the movie, and some of the details are a bit different from the book, but it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the film. #horror #film #horrorfilm #horrormovie #Halloween #Halloweenmovie #scarathlon #booktomovie
Pretty good adaptation. I can see myself revisiting both the book and the movie, but maybe not so close together next time. Some things that are spelled out in the book are only vaguely implied in the movie, so some scenes might not make a lot of sense, and some of the changes from the book are questionable, but overall it works well.
Really excited to see this one since I read the book last year.

This read like a horror flick all the way through and I couldn't put it down until I was done! Fast-paced vivid imagery and no boring lulls or unnecessary scenes made this the perfect book for #readathon. 70 points for #Scarathlon #TeamWhoYaGonnaCall
This book was just cool! 😎 I'm not sure how he pulled it off. The phrases and imagery were excellent. The majority of it is narrative third-person, but the narrator switches to second person at times, telling a story while conversing with the reader, and it works so well. Lots of unanswered questions at the end, but that rarely ever bothers me (what did bother me was the handful of painful typos in this $40 special edition the library had 🤷)
Here‘s my most anticipated watch list for #Scarathlon I‘m super excited for Dark Harvest as my boyfriend and I get to go to an advance screening for it. #earlybirdpoints +21 #TeamCreepinItReal
Book 157 📚 3.5 ⭐
This book STINKS of atmospheric Halloween! In the best way of course.
You feel like you are right there, on the hunt... for him...🎃
If you want to feel the tingle old horror movies used to give you as a kid, this is the book for you.
And apparently it‘s being made into a movie! Which after listening to this, could be SO good.
A fun horror novella with hints of “The Lottery”. Every Halloween young men must hunt a being to get freedom, but is there more to it? This was a quick read, and I would recommend for something fun for Halloween. 4⭐️
I put this book on hold in early October, and it finally came in from the library a couple days ago. Ah well. On Halloween night every year teenage boys of the town have to face a monster with a pumpkin for a head. It‘s a short book (just under 200 pgs), and super fun, and apparently will be a movie. 👍👍
All the spooky love going out to @LeahBergen yet again for the perfection that is my #HauntedHollowSwap package.I was grinning like a fool during my entire unboxing lol.I love everything about this; that Frankenstein journal is almost too good to mess up with my writing ... almost. Seriously, thank you from the bottom of my cold black heart 🖤

Finally, thank you so very much @wanderinglynn for your time & work organizing the swap.
Each year the boys of this small town race to kill the the October Boy, an anthropomorphic pumpkin+vine monster.
Oooo, apparently they are turning this into a movie! I didn't know much about this one going in but I quite liked it.
New book review up! In this episode, I review "Dark Harvest" by Norman Partridge!

This was such a good, quick listen, perfect for the holiday season! Something truly horrifying happens in this small town every year - a pumpkin-headed creature comes out to cause havoc and the “lucky” boy who kills it gets the future of his dreams. But nothing is what it seems and even more sinister things are actually happening. Great full cast of narrators. Only downside was the somewhat unsatisfying ending. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 #scarathlon #teamslaughter

This was a recent cover buy. I may get to it as a mood read this month.
Got this one for the cover alone. It was a quick novella. Loved the concept, I think Stephen King would like it. Wish it was full length for more character development and atmosphere. Or it would make a good graphic novel or movie. #scarathlon #teammonstermash @StayCurious #promptmaze #spookoween #31by31 #pointsathon #dailyprompt @TheSpineView @Catsandbooks @DieAReader

This was a good, tense novella about a small Midwestern town which holds a hunt for the mythological October Boy each Halloween. If this was even shorter, such as 45 minutes or so for the audiobook, I think I would have enjoyed it more…but the author has a somewhat excessive style that was almost hilarious with how many dead horses he was beating at times. Overall this still makes for a fun action-packed book on a cool fall night! 3.5/5

Ya know how sometimes a book gives you exactly what you want when you see the cover? Yes, Dark Harvest did that for me. Originally published in 2006, this book has been on my TBR for years because of how much the cover makes me think Evil Wizard of Oz Story. If you didn‘t know, Jack Pumpkinhead shows up in the second book and the second movie of the Wizard Of Oz stories. His pumpkin head sits on top of his stick boy, and has magical life.
Dark Harvest was captivating, especially after the 20% mark. The writing painted a fantastically eerie atmosphere. I loved the small town + weird ritual trope, as well as the “Who‘s the monster here?” dilemma.

I think maybe we should stop trying to murder the pumpkin boy we create
#12Booksof2020 Day 12
Somehow I think I got a day behind, but wanted to finish up.
I‘m so happy that I finally picked this one up in October. I really enjoyed it.
Nov #BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks This horror novella was ok for me. I'm not fan of this type of book but I wanted to read it and it was in my tbr. I received it last year. Thank you @mabell No one can leave this town but every Halloween there can be a chance by killing the October Boy. How this boogieman is created? Is it true that you can leave the town if you kill the October Boy? Novel is creepy dark and gory but also sad for me🙁3.5⭐️
This one completely surprised me. Horror novella with thematic roots similar to The Lottery. I picked it up because I thought it would be fun & moody for the season. It quickly became one of the stand out reads of the year.
Every Halloween, the October Boy rises from the cornfields to make his way to the church in town. On his trek, he has to face a gauntlet of teenage boys hunting him so they can be the one to end him and win the run.
This one has been languishing on my TBR for years. I‘m so happy it was my #Doublespin , because it‘s the perfect read for October. #Screamathon #BookspinBingo
This was a fun Halloween read. Every year a pumpkin scarecrow comes alive and has to make it to the center of town without the male youth killing it or it killing the youth. Had a strong vibe of Jackson‘s The Lottery, but with a more violent, supernatural, Halloween spin. Decent enough, but nothing special.

This was okay. A quick horror read full of unlikeable characters, a fast moving plot and a writing style that tried to be poetic? I think? But didn‘t quite make it. The most interesting thing in this was the October Boy but aside from that it felt like a typical small town horror storyline just set on Halloween. Nothing exciting but entertaining enough for an evening. #teamslaughter #scarathlon2020 @Clwojick

About Halloween, with a pumpkin on the cover, a character dies, scares me.

Overall, I was reminded of “The Lottery“ and The Hunger Games. A weird blend of the two, yet effective in its examination of conformity and apathy, especially in small town cultures. Or, one could read it simply as a fast-paced, somewhat gory #Halloween tale about kids paying for the sins of their fathers... depending on how you interpret the reasons for the ritual.

This is a very well written book. I read it several years ago and the story is still very vivid in my mind. This town certainly has a unique, and twisted, tradition with pumpkins.
Hoping to get to this spooky read soon, set in #October! #Scarathlon #TeamStoker #ChillingPhotoChallenge @TheReadingMermaid @Clwojick +1 (94 Total)
The path behind my house is so nice and quiet that I can slowly trek up and down it reading, shuffling my feet through the #autumnleaves 😌🍂Great way to start Dark Harvest.
