Mehso-so

A very not Sherlock approved setting for finishing up this read, but this cocktail pop is yummy!

I haven't read much Doyle, interesting how this book (#5) mostly follows Watson. There is a bit of misogyny like you would expect for the time but the layered mystery was interesting, I am still more of a Christie reader (her anti-Semitism and racism put me off there though)
This was just fine. Glad it is off the shelf.

Happy SHERLOCK HOLMES DAY!!!

Got a favorite story from the great detective?

Mine is The Hounds of the Baskervilles 🐕

CogsOfEncouragement Too hard to choose! 3mo

mabell That one is one of my favorites too! But I also always enjoyed The Sign of the Four. 3mo
CrowCAH @CogsOfEncouragement there are several to chose from! 3mo
CrowCAH @Brooke_H woohoo yay! 😁 3mo
CrowCAH @Bklover I remember watching a program on TV when I was younger and being spooked by the tale. Then I read the story later in life and appreciated the text. Sometimes it‘s not about remembering the details but how we felt about it in the end. 3mo
CrowCAH @mabell I‘ve only read a few Holmes stories. I‘ll have to put The Sign of the Four on the TBR. 3mo
JazzFeathers I didn't realised yesterday was Shelock Holmes Day. Yet l celebrated it. I met with a friend that is a fanatic of the TV series and is walking me through it. We watched The Abominable Bride yesterday night, and l loved it. 3mo

I‘m not a fan of neat and tidy endings (with many Sherlock Holmes books, you‘ll get the who, what, where, when, why and how for all aspects of a case, no matter how mysterious its beginnings….it IS a detective story after all); I still like the eeriness of the unexplainable. This book definitely kept up the eeriness for its first 200 pages. What atmosphere! Murder and old folklore all blurred together upon a bleak but beautiful Devonshire moor.

Next on my #12booksof2021 list (April) is the Sherlock Holmes novel: The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Structurally, Holmes' novels will never live up to the well-worn murder mystery formula that we now know and love, but they paved the way for the genre to develop.

The Hound of the Baskervilles is a fantastically atmospheric detective novel that takes the reader right out onto the blustery howling moors.

This book is unlike most other stories in the Sherlock Holmes archive because a significant portion of it is endured by Watson alone. Holmes and Watson depart when it is decided that there is too much work to be done in London and Watson is to advance in the investigation of the beast as much as he can in Devonshire. This strips the reader of the security provided by Sherlock's quick wit and rapid logic that leads to speedy resolutions.

Arthur Conan Doyle - The Case-Book of Sherlock , and other novels about the detective (3586 p.). In times of quarantine, I've been missing a good detective with a nice ending, when the good guys get the bad ones. It was totally worth it to open the classic novels about the iconic detective. Four books, and the last novels in the collection amazed me as much as the first ones ♡

1. So I think that I will read more or even re-read some of the short stories when I‘m home (I have a physical book of then at home) .. I enjoyed Sherlock but some of the narrators were difficult to get into.

2. I think I know the answer to this one!!!! I‘ll post it as a spoiler in the comments of my Litsy post

Just completed the Hound of the Baskervilles, circa 1902, my first Sherlock Holmes 20th century novel, no cars mentioned yet. I have to say this and Conan Doyle‘s A Study in Scarlet were my two favorite reads of his works so far. I thought the memoirs, the adventures, and the return were decent reading but I confess his larger stories are far more developed and interesting. These pieces were mainly written in periodicals for which he was limited.

282Mikado It's been 30 years since I read A.C.D. I may have to go back and read them again. I do believe I like Agatha Christie better though. I read a LOT of her stuff when I was on the Coral Sea back in '79 - '80. Nice thing about a carrier is we had a pretty good sized ship's library. 2y

Fun fact: I have never read or seen a Sherlock Holmes. Is this a good book to start with?

I have a coworker who is so obsessed with these stories that he named his children Sherlock and Irene. I should probably just ask him, but then it turns into a 3 hour conversation. 😅

It's still snowing like mad, so Lucas and I baked some cookies that I bought to support a student's basketball team, and we're going to curl up for the rest of the day. 🍪

Clare-Dragonfly Seems like a good choice to me! 3y
TiredLibrarian I think it's a good place to start. If you want to start at the beginning, you could read the story "A Study in Scarlet." It helps establish the backstory, which is nice but not essential to enjoying that one. I ? Holmes; envy you on reading your first! 3y
Rachel.Rencher @TiredLibrarian Ahh thank you, that's really helpful! 🤗 3y

rabbitprincess I endorse this as a starting point! Enjoy! 3y
Scochrane26 This is the only one I haven‘t read, I think. I would say I‘m a little obsessed w/ Holmes because I love all the spin-off series & retellings. And the show. But, I wouldn‘t name my kids after him. Maybe a cat. 3y
shortsarahrose This is where I started with Holmes. Even though Study in Scarlet came first and featured some backstory of Holmes and Watson, it isn‘t essential for enjoying this one (plus Study in Scarlet takes some odd detours, whereas Baskervilles focuses on the mystery at hand) 3y

This might possibly be my favorite Sherlock story! It has all the Classic 19th c Gothic elements: Fog-steeped moors, dead of the night howling & prowling, a turreted manor house... Sherlock takes on a case in which a baron inherits not only an estate, but a curse! Reason and logic war w/ superstition backed with witness accounts.
N.b. - This is the original story, NOT the TV adaptation-- which differs significantly but is no less entertaining :-)
