“He seems to see good in every one. No one would take him for a clergyman.“
George Emerson, am I right? 🤤
Still 40 pages to finish, but, yet again,my husband should be jealous of this one. Also, how badly hides Forster all these homoerotic situations? Clearly I'm as in love with George as Forster was! (And was as thirsty as him after seeing him with my imagination bathing and playing by the lake 😅)

Nothing like a reread of a novel you first read as a teenager to see how you have changed as a person. All the characters that annoyed me I now sympathize with. I laughed more this time around, seeing the futility of a desperate adherence to propriety as a sign of lost authority. #readingtheclassics

It's so funny rereading these classics that left such a mark on me when I initially read them in my teens/20s. I do enjoy revisiting old favourites. Did I realise how awfully snobbish these characters were back then, I wonder? 🤔

I loved revisiting David Copperfield, a childhood favourite & comfort read. There's something so soothing about returning to familiar words, character & places, don't you think?
As January draws to a close, our next selection will be A room with a view. Starting on 1st Feb. All welcome to join us.

Lucy Honeychurch goes to Florence with her uptight cousin Charlotte hoping to see the world and expand her mind. She does not plan on meeting George Emerson and his father, 2 “radicals” who believe in “Love & Courage.” When Lucy develops feelings for George despite her engagement to another man(the dull & snobbish Cecil Vyse), she has to make a tough choice. Does she follow convention and do what is expected of her or does she follow her heart?
I listened via audible. I enjoyed this story which was first published in 1908. There were moments that made my jaw drop.
The narrator did a lovely job with all the female characters. I didn‘t care for her performance with most of the male characters.
If you have an interest in how middle class British folk talked and felt in the early 1900s this would be a good read. I found them highly annoying. But I guess that was the point of the novel. A mediocre romance at best.
#bookspin complete! I always feel like novels from this era pass me by a bit… I always miss the scandal (ie; the kiss in the violets) 🙈 and then have to backtrack to figure out what everyone is freaking out about! Predictable but some good dialogue and some pretty funny one-liners.
Heading back to serial reader. This is mentioned in 'Still Life' so seemed like a good choice
This book was funny, insightful, cynical, and romantic. What‘s not to like? I‘ve been familiar with the story, watching and rewatching various movie versions for years, but am so glad that I finally read it.
I‘ll give this a pick but it‘s probably more of a so-so. At times it was hard to follow as I found the writing a bit “proper” for lack of a better word which made the sentences garbled and confusing at times. And while the characters could be irritating in their stubbornness, it was a satisfying love story that also said a lot about the socio-economic aspects and sexism of the early 20th century. Glad I finally got around to reading this. 3/5⭐️
I found this to be an interesting read that had many beautiful and insightful quotes
My sister graciously took my kids this weekend so I could have some time to myself, and grow my ♾ TBR pile.
Up next...another new-to-me classic. Dying to travel somewhere. I really don‘t care where. So, give me all the books set in foreign cities! ✈️
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2 This is a pretty quick read. I really enjoyed the sense of humor and the characters. I felt it slowed toward the end but maybe because I got caught up with Christmas so it took days and days to finish!
Everyone walks through the world with their own “view“ which is unique to them. We also walk around with the understanding that others view people, events and situations differently from each other. Your view dictates how you navigate the world.

I adore Mr. Emerson. He is my favorite fella. So many sweet gems in this novel. As many times as I‘ve seen the film, I don‘t think I‘ve ever read the novel. I‘m really enjoying it of course!
A delight. I loved this comedy of manners set in Florence & Surrey. Lucy seeks adventure but still drawn to the safe future laid out for her. Charlotte is wonderfully funny as the martyr we love to hate. Forster captures awkward English manners perfectly. Light but clever prose, not a word wasted, with universal themes of constraints on women, love & breaking from family expectations. Great armchair travel.
File this under views I just can‘t get enough of. 😍

Exciting day here in stay-at-home-Brooklyn! My quarantine view has a new look, as they have just put up a new Apple ad on the billboard across the street (bottom pic). The previous ad (top pic) had been in place since early June.
(Sorry, couldn't resist using this book title for the post)
When we were only acquaintances, you let me be myself, but now you're always protecting me... I won't be protected. I will choose for myself what is ladylike and right. To shield me is an insult. Can't I be trusted to face the truth but I must get it second-hand through you? A woman's place!
I think if I had not seen the movie before reading it, I wouldn‘t have enjoyed this one as much. I love the movie, and I think that helped me enjoy the book even more. 🎥 📖 Basically, the HBCarter version is a pretty spot on copy of the book in the way of dialogue. I enjoyed the scenic descriptions as well. Reading it as an audiobook was enjoyable and I‘d recommend it.

Audio- listening to this one. When reading multiple books concerning hard subjects, I needed a light audiobook. I haven‘t read a “classic” in quite some time and I‘m hoping to start back by listening to them on audio. I Love this movie and thought, “ it‘s about time I read it. “💙
I can't stand these people and the story is tedious. I'm giving up. Maybe I'll try it again in a few months. Or maybe I'll just watch the movie. 🤷♀️ #BookSpinBingo
So far, I'm finding most of these characters have a rigidity of manners and thought that is most tiresome. Hopefully that is the point. If not I think I'll find this rough going.
“Life is easy to chronicle, but bewildering to practise.”

As a portrait of a young girl‘s coming-of-age in a time before women had the vote, and the class system was very clearly defined, this book has its place as an important book to read. And I‘m glad I read it. But I can‘t say I‘m enjoyed it. There are some moments of comedy in the behaviour of some of the characters - Ms Bartlett‘s attempts at explaining her obviously selfish behaviours as being solely for the sake of etiquette are exquisite...

Read this one to follow along with my friend's reading group (#RtC). Hard to get while in a reading slump, but I did ultimately enjoy it. It has all the elements I like in the genre and classical period of literature. Not sure why I never got around to reading it before, considering I've read Howard's End twice.

Steinbeck seems to have the right quote for everything. I‘m reading his “Life in Letters” and I can across this quote which reminded me of A Room With A View, which i just recently read and watched.
“Cecil, since his engagement, had taken to affect a cosmopolitan naughtiness which he was far from possessing.“
“The thousand little civilities that create a tenderness in time.“
“The sadness of the incomplete - the sadness that is often life, but should never be Art.“
