Penguin Essentials a Room with a View
Penguin Essentials a Room with a View | E M Forster
'You love the boy body and soul, plainly, directly, as he loves you . . .'Lucy has her rigid, middle-class life mapped out for her until she visits Florence with her uptight cousin Charlotte, and finds her neatly ordered existence thrown off balance. Her eyes are opened by the unconventional characters she meets at the Pension Pertolini: flamboyant romantic novelist Eleanor Lavish, the Cockney Signora, curious Mr Emerson and, most of all, his passionate son George.Lucy finds herself torn between the intensity of life in Italy and the repressed morals of Victorian England, personified in her terminally dull fianc Cecil Vyse. Will she ever learn to follow her own heart?A Room with a View is a sunny, brilliantly witty comedy of manners.'He says, and even more implies, things that no other novelist does, and we can go on reading Forster indefinitely' The Times 'I loved it. My first intimation of the possibilities of fiction' Zadie Smith

Cuilin A room is indoors, closed with walls, limited even boring. As a person it would be Cecil, as a society it‘s those that cling to old fashioned manners. A view outdoors is limitless, it‘s the Emerson‘s, it‘s a new generation willing to think and challenge. Such a clever title. 3w
AllDebooks @Cuilin great comment. It really is a clever title. I like the analogy of men having the "view" and women being enclosed by societal limitations 3w

George Emerson, am I right? 🤤

Still 40 pages to finish, but, yet again,my husband should be jealous of this one. Also, how badly hides Forster all these homoerotic situations? Clearly I'm as in love with George as Forster was! (And was as thirsty as him after seeing him with my imagination bathing and playing by the lake 😅)

#ReReadtheclassics @AllDebooks @LitStephanie @MilesnMelodies @Sparklemn @Crinoline_Laphroaig @Cuilin

AllDebooks 🤣🤣🤣😍 3w
Cuilin The bathing scene is completely homoerotic. I think he “outed” himself in his writing. Interesting considering he didn‘t want “Maurice” published till after his death. 3w
nanuska_153 @Cuilin I know, it's exactly what I thought too. Was even more shocking for me the fact that Cecil finally falls in love with Lucy when she describes him with Emerson's words and he falls in love with this "new person that speaks for her" and sees her as the perfect woman, so Emerson is the woman of his dreams? And me thinking "this is like when people didn't know that George Michael was gay" 3w

Nothing like a reread of a novel you first read as a teenager to see how you have changed as a person. All the characters that annoyed me I now sympathize with. I laughed more this time around, seeing the futility of a desperate adherence to propriety as a sign of lost authority. #readingtheclassics

It's so funny rereading these classics that left such a mark on me when I initially read them in my teens/20s. I do enjoy revisiting old favourites. Did I realise how awfully snobbish these characters were back then, I wonder? 🤔

I loved revisiting David Copperfield, a childhood favourite & comfort read. There's something so soothing about returning to familiar words, character & places, don't you think?

As January draws to a close, our next selection will be A room with a view. Starting on 1st Feb. All welcome to join us.

Lucy Honeychurch goes to Florence with her uptight cousin Charlotte hoping to see the world and expand her mind. She does not plan on meeting George Emerson and his father, 2 “radicals” who believe in “Love & Courage.” When Lucy develops feelings for George despite her engagement to another man(the dull & snobbish Cecil Vyse), she has to make a tough choice. Does she follow convention and do what is expected of her or does she follow her heart?

I listened via audible. I enjoyed this story which was first published in 1908. There were moments that made my jaw drop.

The narrator did a lovely job with all the female characters. I didn‘t care for her performance with most of the male characters.

If you have an interest in how middle class British folk talked and felt in the early 1900s this would be a good read. I found them highly annoying. But I guess that was the point of the novel. A mediocre romance at best.

#bookspin complete! I always feel like novels from this era pass me by a bit… I always miss the scandal (ie; the kiss in the violets) 🙈 and then have to backtrack to figure out what everyone is freaking out about! Predictable but some good dialogue and some pretty funny one-liners.

I‘ll give this a pick but it‘s probably more of a so-so. At times it was hard to follow as I found the writing a bit “proper” for lack of a better word which made the sentences garbled and confusing at times. And while the characters could be irritating in their stubbornness, it was a satisfying love story that also said a lot about the socio-economic aspects and sexism of the early 20th century. Glad I finally got around to reading this. 3/5⭐️

My sister graciously took my kids this weekend so I could have some time to myself, and grow my ♾ TBR pile.

mandarchy I like how you don't lie to yourself - TBR pile instead of reading all of this in one weekend. If I could just get someone to take my dog and my kid at the same time... Oh - and maybe not even be at home. The dishes even need me. Where can I hide? 2y
Tianarose @mandarchy I hear ya!! I am insanely jealous of people who post stacks like this for their weekly reading! Although since I discovered audiobooks a couple years ago I do manage to squeeze in a few more than I used to and still get all the above done. ( mom of 3 and two dogs!) 2y

A delight. I loved this comedy of manners set in Florence & Surrey. Lucy seeks adventure but still drawn to the safe future laid out for her. Charlotte is wonderfully funny as the martyr we love to hate. Forster captures awkward English manners perfectly. Light but clever prose, not a word wasted, with universal themes of constraints on women, love & breaking from family expectations. Great armchair travel.

I think if I had not seen the movie before reading it, I wouldn‘t have enjoyed this one as much. I love the movie, and I think that helped me enjoy the book even more. 🎥 📖 Basically, the HBCarter version is a pretty spot on copy of the book in the way of dialogue. As a portrait of a young girl‘s coming-of-age in a time before women had the vote, and the class system was very clearly defined, this book has its place as an important book to read. And I‘m glad I read it. But I can‘t say I‘m enjoyed it. There are some moments of comedy in the behaviour of some of the characters - Ms Bartlett‘s attempts at explaining her obviously selfish behaviours as being solely for the sake of etiquette are exquisite...

TheEllieMo ... but there seems to be also a lot of unnecessary nonsense in this book. Forster‘s writing didn‘t make me feel engaged with any of the characters. I fully expected to love this book, so I‘m probably more disappointed with it than if I‘d gone into it with no expectations. 3y
Bradleygirl it's young/early Forster, I agree it has some serious handicaps. This is one of the only books of which I say I loved the movie, much more. 3y
