Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim
Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim | David Sedaris
David Sedaris plays in the snow with his sisters. He goes on vacation with his family. He gets a job selling drinks. He attends his brother's wedding. He mops his sister's floor. He gives directions to a lost traveler. He eats a hamburger. He has his blood sugar tested. It all sounds so normal, doesn't it? In his newest collection of essays, David Sedaris lifts the corner of ordinary life, revealing the absurdity teeming below its surface. His world is alive with obscure desires and hidden motives -- a world where forgiveness is automatic and an argument can be the highest form of love. Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim is another unforgettable collection from one of the wittiest and most original writers at work today.

While I know of Sedaris, I don't think I've actually read him before? A Libro.fm sale was a good excuse to give him a shot - he's lovely reading his own work. This was a fun read, but not exactly in my personal humor pocket - it keeps edging toward embarrassment humor. But there were a few moments that were perfectly set up and gut-punched me with a combo of humor and emotion. Well worth the read.

A fun one from Sedaris. Most of the essays relate stories from his childhood, plus there‘s a particularly good one from his younger years in NYC. Definitely some laugh out loud moments.

David Sedaris‘ novels are the literary equivalent to stand up comedy. What humour and wit. He has such an eye for how the small moments of our lives can become pure comedic gold.

Can never get enough David Sedaris - trying to get through the backlist before seeing him live in October. I realized I‘ve barely been on Litsy; super busy at work, the US is a dumpster fire, and then Covid finally caught my husband and me after over two years of dodging bullets. It hasn‘t been fun at all but really hoping to be on the upswing in the next few days!

The only one of the stories from this collection I already knew was “Six to Eight Black Men“ which is about conceptions of Santa around the world and is much more like Sedaris‘ traditional comedy than most of this dry autobiographical collection. I ended up enjoying the more serious essays though, even though they surprised me, and I really appreciated his unsentimental observations on family. #WinterGames2021 #TeamGameSleighers @StayCurious

I loved, loved, loved my first adventure with David Sedaris, Me Talk Pretty One Day, so I‘m not ashamed to say I came to Dress Your Family In Corduroy And Denim hoping for more of the same. Such an approach would normally invite disappointment, but Sedaris totally delivered. This is an amazing collection of 22 autobiographical essays. My first David Sedaris book - I loved how human and intimate the essays were, but still funny. I love humour that doesn‘t try to iron out the complexity in real situations and reduce it down, this let all the people and situations be gorgeously and deliciously complicated, sometimes bittersweet, always so fun to read.

@CaroPi THANK YOU I loved it 🥰

COVID really threw a wrench in my daily reading routine. I had originally planned to read one or two books a week in 2020 and I thought with COVID I would be able to read so much more! But in actuality the opposite happened. that‘s not necessarily a bad thing because I have made progress in other areas of my life re: quilting. So....anyone else not meeting their reading goals, in lieu of other achievements?

So I think I read this in college and want to get to it again...I know it was Sedaris, but I don't remember which book it was. It was one of my first taste of gay media and when I talked with the professor about it she got super excited that I was excited and it was one my happiest memories of Minot State. God I wish I could remember which collection it was from.

His writing is sharp, hilarious, and always adds in a twist of a moral to give the reader pause- for-thought. I can hardly wait to read his newest book!

Another funny collection of essays from Sedaris. My favorite was the last one where David looks at his living room through the eyes of a stranger.

There were some stories I liked more than others, but I keep coming back for more so I suppose that makes me a fan.
