Wonder | Emma Donoghue
In Emma Donoghue's latest masterpiece, an English nurse brought to a small Irish village to observe what appears to be a miracle-a girl said to have survived without food for months-soon finds herself fighting to save the child's life. Tourists flock to the cabin of eleven-year-old Anna O'Donnell, who believes herself to be living off manna from heaven, and a journalist is sent to cover the sensation. Lib Wright, a veteran of Florence Nightingale's Crimean campaign, is hired to keep watch over the girl. Written with all the propulsive tension that made Room a huge bestseller, THE WONDER works beautifully on many levels--a tale of two strangers who transform each other's lives, a powerful psychological thriller, and a story of love pitted against evil.

A bit slow to start but by the end I couldn't put it down. There were some very sad and difficult moments in this one. I don't think I will ever forget it. Historic fiction combined with a mystery to be solved. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This story was dark and damp and unsettling and I had to read some fun picture books to shake it off. I don‘t regret the time I gave to it, but I was glad to be finished with it. #bfc I have read 2 books and drank so much water (very hot and humid in Florida). Meditating for smaller moments has worked really well for for me. I have worked out almost every day because I am tackling projects and gardening and playing with grandkids!

wanderinglynn Sounds like a great week! 🙌🏻 way to go! And I like the idea of meditating in small chunks. I may give that a try because so far, I‘m not doing great at meditating. 4mo
Annl @wanderinglynn I am trying to do a lot in small chunks. But especially for meditating, trying to find a larger period of time is always difficult. I can find 2 or 3 minutes, even during days filled with young children. I hope to slip all these habits into my daily schedule permanently. I just did 15 minutes of little chores, change Ac filter, clean out a kitchen shelf. Thank you for hosting! 😘 4mo

I might have rated it higher, but the story was pretty slow-going. For the last third of the book or so, I thought it picked up quite a bit, but decided that I‘d keep my rating at “ok”, which is where it fell for me for most of the book. I guess I shouldn‘t have been surprised at the crazy religious people

This novel inspired by the fasting girls of Europe and North America who claimed to go for long stretches of time without food. This story is all historical fiction and a bit gothic also very heartbreaking a definite page turner. A19th century psychological thriller ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ same author as The Room

Really enjoyed this read in spite of the main character having some opinions that were uncomfortable to me. Her inflexible inability to understand the family she is assigned, as a nurse, to observe, makes her difficult to like. But it also adds to the interesting story arc.

Set in Ireland #bookishbingo

I enjoyed the book, set in Ireland in the 1830‘s. The MC is a nurse from England, hired to watch a girl who doesn‘t eat. The Irish Catholic Church and their belief in miracles is a back character in this one. Every family has secrets. #24b4Monday finish #3

This starts slowly and somewhat repetitively but overall I enjoyed it. I liked that the main character, Lib, was unlikeable, that she was often pulled up by the people she was so dismissive of. I enjoyed seeing how the story turned into something she wasn‘t expecting. Overall this is a study of faith, religion, communities, superstitions, and the era when nursing was not recognised as a profession or skill. Interesting and worth the read.

Absolutely riveting! Donoghue really captures how poor Irish lived after the famine and not only religious fervor but how cultural differences and prejudices can cloud ones perception. I was absolutely thrown at one point! Donoghue also created wonderfully unlikable characters!! The photo is of the Irish Famine Memorial, taken on our visit in 2017. *Note below*

IamIamIam Additionally, the memorial was built across the road from the site of a large work house and in which there is a large pauper's field. It was an extremely eerie place to visit and you couldn't have paid me to cross the street into the fields. Famine graves can also be seen in churchyards, marked by a stone with no names. They tend to be mass graves as those starving didn't have provisions for burial. 10mo

I have a REAL problem with Lib. She's so offputting to me and if @Tamra didn't say she enjoyed this so much, I'd think about bailing! First of all, she craps all over these poor people's living conditions and I mean POOR. 1859 poverty stricken Ireland! THEN, she breaks Anna's stuff with no remorse and also mocks Sister Michael's beliefs!!! Like you can't have taken vows and believe in caring for people at the same time. I'm mad....

Lib Wright is an English nurse (trained by the famous Florence Nightingale) who takes a job involving round-the-clock surveillance of an eleven year old girl. Anna hasn‘t eaten for months and her parents are convinced that she is a saint who can subsist on nothing more than air. Lib has her doubts and sets out to prove that someone is slipping food to Anna.

A slow-moving, atmospheric mystery that really got its hooks in me.

The subject matter and time period are not my usual fare, but I like to read something outside my wheelhouse now and then to keep things interesting. The story of a girl in 1800s Ireland who claims she doesn't need to eat (and the skeptical nurse hired to keep watch over her for a fortnight) definitely qualifies. This one sat on my Kindle for two years, but I'm glad I finally got around to reading this well-written and interesting book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

The plot moves incredibly slow and builds frustration in the reader which echos the frustration Lib has in her quest of discovering what is really happening with this little girl. Is she surviving without food, or is there something else going on?

Although slow at times, I was enchanted with Donoghue's work and can't wait to see what she has in store for readers next.

A shocking, slow burning novel that tackles the “fasting girls” phenomenon made popular in the 1800s. Lib, a Nightingale nurse, is hired to watch young Anna, who claims no food has passed her lips in four months. Lib is skeptical and sets out to “debunk” this. What she finds instead is a world full of superstition and religion and how the term faith can have many different definitions. This ended up a pick for me. My “W” for #LitsyAtoZ2018 .

RadicalReader She also wrote an equally incredible novel 12mo

It's a wonder I finished this book. The primary protagonist is straightforward Nightingale Nurse that doesn't suffer the religious leanings of the Irish. As expected, the climax leads much to be desired as the author gets bogged down (pun intended) in making everything/one as unlikable as possible. Bold move. Unless your interest is already present, I can't recommend this to anyone.

And boy did it. Nurse Wright went to the committee with less than desirable results. She shifted herself and hatched a plan to extricate young Anna from this religious nonsense. I haven't shifted much on my opinion on this book, though.
