All Things Cease to Appear
All Things Cease to Appear: A novel | Elizabeth Brundage
A dark, riveting, beautifully written bookby a brilliant novelist, according to Richard Bauschthat combines noir and the gothic in a story about two families entwined in their own unhappiness, with, at its heart, a gruesome and unsolved murder Late one winter afternoon in upstate New York, George Clare comes home to find his wife killed and their three-year-old daughter alonefor how many hours?in her room across the hall. He had recently, begrudgingly, taken a position at a nearby private college (far too expensive for local kids to attend) teaching art history, and moved his family into a tight-knit, impoverished town that has lately been discovered by wealthy outsiders in search of a rural idyll. George is of course the immediate suspectthe question of his guilt echoing in a story shot through with secrets both personal and professional. While his parents rescue him from suspicion, a persistent cop is stymied at every turn in proving Clare a heartless murderer. And three teenage brothers (orphaned by tragic circumstances) find themselves entangled in this mystery, not least because the Clares had moved into their childhood home, a once-thriving dairy farm. The pall of death is ongoing, and relentless; behind one crime there are others, and more than twenty years will pass before a hard kind of justice is finally served. A rich and complex portrait of a psychopath and a marriage, this is also an astute study of the various taints that can scar very different families, and even an entire community. Elizabeth Brundage is an essential talent who has given us a true modern classic. From the Hardcover edition.

I am both frustrated and in awe. This was EXCELLENT. Without giving too much away, let‘s just say that the bad guy doesn‘t get what he deserves. Might be the first book I‘ve read where that happens. It‘s atmospheric, beautifully written, and honestly quite spooky. Just a general sense of unease but in the best way (if that‘s possible). @Megabooks WOW I loved this!!

I was listening to an interview with Elizabeth Brundage , and this show was mentioned. I‘m going to have a look , it‘s on Netflix . #12BooksOf2021

I am sharing my almost-favorites of the year. The ones who didn‘t make my #Top21Of21 but are favorites nevertheless. One for each month.

This book had been sitting on my shelves for years. In #May @Megabooks encouraged me to finally read it. And how right she was. This is an amazing atmospheric and thrilling book.

I‘m giving this a pick despite the disappointing lackluster end. Brundage knows how to write a thoroughly despicable antagonist and how to build suspense, which made it a compulsive listen and enjoyable. I think perhaps because of that I wanted a more satisfying resolution. Also my same old gripe about the romance that seemed so unrealistic and unimaginative.

Captured misogyny in the ‘70s well!

Cathythoughts Great review! The end was awful , he got away with it all … he didn‘t live, he just left , there was no justice. 3y
Tamra @Cathythoughts yes! It felt like she wanted to wrap it up the story & be done with it. The relationship between Cole & Francie was wayyyy to convenient and utterly unrealistic. 3y
Cathythoughts @Tamra I agree about the ending , but I didn‘t mind too much ( except for that psychopath) .. I enjoyed the journey & the writing very much 3y
Tamra @Cathythoughts indeed, she writes an excellent psychopath! 😬 I‘m anxious to see what you think of her next book. (edited) 3y

This book is a force of nature, metaphorically & literally. In Catherine‘s first experience of the house the weather is cold & unforgiving. 1970‘s , an old farm in a town in Vermont, two families intertwine their destinies. The weather , the elements, the psyche, of these people come together to deliver an excellent thriller.. I found myself believing in the ghosts of this book .. believing in the haunting of the past. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Cathythoughts My only issue was with the ending … that evil man , that psychopath, got away far too lightly @Megabooks @BarbaraBB 3y

Megabooks @Cathythoughts @BarbaraBB yes, all those years he got to raise his daughter were so frustrating as a reader. I do like the image of him tacking blindly into the wind and dying alone, but it sucks that he had a good life for so long before it!! No true punishment for his crime. 3y

Catherine is murdered and the focus of the book is more a whydunnit than a whodunnit. It‘s the story of the events leading up to the murder. It‘s the story of an unhappy woman doing the best she can, lonely in a rural community in upstate NY. It‘s the story of her husband who reminds me of Mr Ripley. And it‘s the sad story of the family who lived in their house before them. A riveting psychological and literary thriller. With a few ghosts.

Still a 5⭐️ literary thriller. The book opens to the aftermath of an axe murder, and the author then rewinds and follows the threads forward to it. The question isn‘t so much who did it but why it became necessary and whether he gets away with it. Both those questions are well answered, and that ending...very striking. My favorite character (again) is Willis, a runaway from the Upper East Side who propels a lot of action. Perfection! #reread

This literary thriller opens with the murder of a woman in her home. We then take a long meandering step back and meet the neighbors, their co-workers, even the family who lived in the house before them. At times I forgot it was supposed to be a thriller. I loved all the POVs. This is a slow burn but totally worth it. 4⭐️ book 19

A sharp psychological portrait of a marriage and murder. The question of who the murderer is was never a mystery to me, but the unraveling of the husband and wife was both sad and shocking at times. When I started this, I didn‘t realize the majority of it was set in the ‘70s, but the undercurrent of the women‘s lib movement makes a nice juxtaposition to the uneven marriage. I was somewhat disappointed by the ending though.

So tough to discuss this one without spoilers! I can say that the writing was well done, the story was captivating, but I wasn't always pleased with what was happening in it. I definitely had some frustrated moments where I wanted to yell and I can't help but wonder if it would have been more interesting had the murder not been disclosed in the first few pages, but I'd still recommend this if you're ok not always feeling comfortable.

Not really sure how to rate this one. It was definitely not what I was expecting. Thought it would be a thriller but it was more just about the characters and their lives. The writing was good, but it drove me nuts that she didn't use quotation marks at all. Are all her books like that? Still giving it a pick since it was enjoyable for the most part.

Really enjoyed this author's writing style and the story set-up. The book starts with a murder and then flashes back to show how it all came about. The ending is a bit abrupt but that does not take away from an enjoyable read.
