All Things Cease to Appear
All Things Cease to Appear: A novel | Elizabeth Brundage
122 posts | 90 read | 3 reading | 176 to read
A dark, riveting, beautifully written book—by “a brilliant novelist,” according to Richard Bausch—that combines noir and the gothic in a story about two families entwined in their own unhappiness, with, at its heart, a gruesome and unsolved murder   Late one winter afternoon in upstate New York, George Clare comes home to find his wife killed and their three-year-old daughter alone—for how many hours?—in her room across the hall. He had recently, begrudgingly, taken a position at a nearby private college (far too expensive for local kids to attend) teaching art history, and moved his family into a tight-knit, impoverished town that has lately been discovered by wealthy outsiders in search of a rural idyll.  George is of course the immediate suspect—the question of his guilt echoing in a story shot through with secrets both personal and professional. While his parents rescue him from suspicion, a persistent cop is stymied at every turn in proving Clare a heartless murderer. And three teenage brothers (orphaned by tragic circumstances) find themselves entangled in this mystery, not least because the Clares had moved into their childhood home, a once-thriving dairy farm. The pall of death is ongoing, and relentless; behind one crime there are others, and more than twenty years will pass before a hard kind of justice is finally served.  A rich and complex portrait of a psychopath and a marriage, this is also an astute study of the various taints that can scar very different families, and even an entire community. Elizabeth Brundage is an essential talent who has given us a true modern classic. From the Hardcover edition.

I thought that this book was brilliant and very unsettling. I finished in one evening, and then reread it from the beginning. There is a lot of blurring between reality and illusion, time past and present. Lots of dread and atmosphere.

A sharp psychological portrait of a marriage and murder. The question of who the murderer is was never a mystery to me, but the unraveling of the husband and wife was both sad and shocking at times. When I started this, I didn‘t realize the majority of it was set in the ‘70s, but the undercurrent of the women‘s lib movement makes a nice juxtaposition to the uneven marriage. I was somewhat disappointed by the ending though.

Audiobook version is a little confusing when it delves into the unnecessary realm of art and God. Interesting story idea with mostly decent writing but it tangented a bit and just ended, like the author decided to be done.

It's been so long since I've posted, but I'm glad this book is the one I get to return to posting with. I don't even know how to really describe it. Not really a mystery, but there were some mysterious elements. More of a reflection on relationships and how the past can haunt the future. So good!

A pretty fitting bottle of wine for this book!

I really enjoyed this one, especially the twisting narrative and the complex backstories of all the characters. Go and read it!

So tough to discuss this one without spoilers! I can say that the writing was well done, the story was captivating, but I wasn't always pleased with what was happening in it. I definitely had some frustrated moments where I wanted to yell and I can't help but wonder if it would have been more interesting had the murder not been disclosed in the first few pages, but I'd still recommend this if you're ok not always feeling comfortable.

OK, maybe I'm being nitpicky, but you're telling me that the guy in this book hit a deer with a Fiat and there is no damage to the car? Ha ha, this story has me captivated so far, but there are a lot of little unbelievable details like this.

Notafraidofwords I didn't notice that when I read it lol. 2y

Not really sure how to rate this one. It was definitely not what I was expecting. Thought it would be a thriller but it was more just about the characters and their lives. The writing was good, but it drove me nuts that she didn't use quotation marks at all. Are all her books like that? Still giving it a pick since it was enjoyable for the most part.

Really enjoyed this author's writing style and the story set-up. The book starts with a murder and then flashes back to show how it all came about. The ending is a bit abrupt but that does not take away from an enjoyable read.

Um, what just happened!? ?I have so many complaints. If this hadn't been categorized as a mystery thriller with paranormal elements... Guys. I'd probably be fine. But it WAS. And it was not. A mystery. At all. ??And like, can we talk about the sexism here? Made me so angry ? also why so many POVs? And loose ends!? And NO QUOTATION MARKS? ?? Clearly I can't read "mysteries" without discussion buddies because how am I even gonna sleep rn?

WordWaller PS: I didn't hate it! But whyyyyyy was it sooooo looooong? 😉 Probably would've enjoyed a shorter version of this more. 3y
OSChamberlain Ohhhhh boy. It's definitely cringeworthy when an author chooses not to do any quotation marks. 3y
Megabooks I loved it. I didn't think of it as a mystery. I thought it was gothic, which helped. Plus I loved Willis! I thought it was a well-painted portrait of a psychopath. 3y
See All 9 Comments
Notafraidofwords I didn't think it was a mystery, atleast I didn't read it as such. I knew who did it all along. I saw it as a portrait of women in horrible marriages. 3y
WordWaller @Ebooksandcooks @Notafraidofwords I wouldn't even consider it gothic at all. The house element maybe, but even that didn't come off as strongly as it could have. I think when you look at it as the portrait of a bad marriage and the direct result of one of them being a psychopath, it was a good book. But again, too long. I really like Cole and Willis too, and wish we had seen more of them!! Why so rushed!? 3y
WordWaller Just realized I sounded like I contradicted myself. What I meant was that there were gems of characters and then unnecessary ones and she should have stuck to just a few to keep it shorter and more focused 3y
Notafraidofwords @WordWaller I definitely agree. I also wanted to experience more happiness for Cole. 3y
susanw I thought the same thing. If I went in thinking it was a slow burner gothic book is have liked it better. But I too went in with mystery thriller, and that it was not. Exceptions can really influence your reading experience. 3y
Jokila @Ebooksandcooks I loved Willis too! I think this book did pull this truck on a lot of folks though lol. I thought it was a mystery thriller when I started it and yeah, it's not 😝 I did like the loads of POVs though 3y

A sophisticated thriller with meditations on sex, class + the afterlife, All Things Cease to Appear isn't about whodunnit; no big twist is coming on the last page. It's more true to life than that + Brundage is so good at characterizing her cast that they can't hide their true natures. They're believably pathetic, believably miserable, believably terrifying + they each send ripples of damage through each other's lives, until no one's left unbroken

Evocative descriptions of characters and scenes. Compelling narrative kept me reading hoping that, as one character says, people get what they deserve.
