Here are the options I found for our #LMPBC book. I'm leaning towards Sourdough since I've been meaning to read it for years, but I know it was popular. Thoughts? @DarcysMom @leslieseidel @arubabookwoman

I‘m listening to Sourdough as a reread for #LitsyBookClub this month. As someone who has baked with sourdough for many years, the early portion includes a fun but unrealistic story of learning to bake. I can‘t imagine anyone being so successful so fast! While listening, I‘m enjoying a supper of fresh cucumbers and a baked potato from the garden with roast beef on a sourdough roll.

#audiobook #ReadandEat #reread

sammisho This book definitely gave me unrealistic expectations! 2mo
Daisey @sammisho 😂 I think I read it so quickly the first time and was amused enough that I didn‘t really stop to think about just how unbelievably amazing her baking was from the start. I remember noticing it but not like I did today. Perfect loaves in a homemade wood fire brick oven on the first try and multiple loaves a week when she had never baked in her life is ridiculous! 2mo

I don‘t know how Robin Sloan pulled this off but he somehow made a book about sourdough weirdly entertaining. Lois works at a high tech company in San Francisco and is given sourdough starter by acquaintances who need to leave the country. The sourdough starter takes on a life of its own and is a character unto itself. It was a fun read and left me hankering for some bread!

DebinHawaii I really enjoyed this one! 3mo

I experienced a similar development of feeling with Sourdough as with Mr Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookshop. At first I found the quirkiness charming and the interplay of tradition (books or baking) and high technology intriguing, but as the story went on it failed to add depth and once the initial novelty had worn off it became ephemeral and irritating like a vague itch.

LeahBergen What a great way of describing the moment when tepid interest turns to irritation. 👏🏻 4mo
saresmoore I felt much the same about this book. The annoying fizzle is both one of my pet peeves as a reader and one of my greatest fears as a writer. 4mo

I enjoyed Lois, the MC, and her adventures in and around San Francisco. Since I live in the city, I understood and appreciated all the landmarks as well as Tech start-up pains she was going through. However, the book lost me during the second half of the story. I liked that it was kind-of weird and creative, but the plot felt forced. I got a bored at the end and had to make myself finish.

Lois works at a tech company in San Francisco. Her life is predictable and not terribly interesting. When a sourdough starter enters her life, the unexpected happens, friendships bloom, and suddenly Lois gets interesting as she gets interested in life around her.

A tech geek programming robots in San Francisco learns to overcome her social awkwardness when she‘s entrusted with a crock of unusual sourdough starter. All of the foodie content, not to mention the magical microbes, put this satirical romp directly in my wheelhouse. Lots of fun, up to and including the fungal party hellscape near the end. #Audiobook performed by Therese Plummer also includes fragments of music as a nice touch.

Meh ... unpopular opinion time: I didn‘t love this one. Didn‘t hate it ... but definitely didn‘t love it. It‘s sweet, and easy to digest, and easy to cheer for Lois, Beo, & even the starter itself. I just don‘t see it sticking with me for long.

Finally got my Reading Recommendation Streak Going 💙I recommended this one to my mom the week of Christmas but she hasn‘t had time to read much. However, she finished it in a reading frenzy yesterday& this morning 🤗She loved it & asked if I had Sloan‘s other book Mr Penumbra‘s...& I said OF COURSE I DO! My past three RECS before this one haven‘t hit home for her- Im a Librarian for Pete‘s Sake! Thankfully, this one was the right one! ➡️

Emily92Bibliophile Any of y‘all have recommendations for books/ authors that have a similar writing style as Robin Sloan? I was thinking of Where‘d you Go Bernadette as one but couldn‘t think of another. 🤔I Have introduced Kate Morton to her and she likes Morton, but she wasn‘t as thrilled / excited as she was with this one. This was quirky & endearing and it made me crave soup & sourdough. Just as in Mr. Penumbra, it has a semi-fantastical element to it that in the end, takes the novel completely off the rails before Sloan reins it in with a quick resolution. But I liked it anyway! There were a few threads that seemed either unnecessary or underdeveloped (the Lois Club being the prime example), but overall I enjoyed this. Another solid pick for #NewYearWhoDis!

BarbaraJean I started this on audio, and finished it up in print over the weekend. And I do have to say that I wish the audio narrator had done her homework on how to pronounce a few place names (mispronunciation is one of my big audio pet peeves!), but other than that, the audio was good as well. (edited) 7mo
Johanna414 I think I liked this so well because I used it as an excuse to eat A LOT of bread while reading it... 7mo

To quote @candority (because I couldn‘t put it in better words):

“The main character, Lois Clary, is a software engineer who inherits a sourdough starter from her favourite restaurant. The first half of the book, as Lois learns how to bake, is fantastic and laugh-out-loud funny in spots, but the last 1/4 or so of the book fizzled out for me. The narrator for the audiobook was wonderful though!”

Started out great. Too bad the end got weird!

It‘s hard for me to objectively rate this book, because as predicted, I found myself wandering off a bit. I just don‘t do well with audiobooks since I don‘t really enjoy being read to. I never really have. I prefer to self narrate. Those tidbits aside, this book was whimsical and left me with a craving for freshly baked bread. And the image above was actually in my hamburger bun tonight. Anyone who read this book will appreciate the irony.
