And with this book, SJM loses me a lot. Aelin is conniving, and after 5 books her lack of communication is so frustrating. Especially when combined with SJM‘s habit of springing “known” info on the readers, it was a slog. Also, the repetition is a little annoying. “Rutting” isn‘t a great word, and absolutely does not replace the f-word well. Just say f*ck with your whole chest, please.

Pickpick

The last book I finished before camp ended! Heir of Fire and Queen of Shadows are probably my favorite books in this whole series. Chaol can jump off the tallest glass spire, but I enjoy everyone else. Rowan and his cadre are still my favorite characters, and Elide/Manon‘s storylines are more compelling than the others, but I still had a good time.

This book is why I like the series. I had such a good time reading it, even though it had many of the same problems of the other two. I think it‘s just that Maas finally figured out who her characters were and where she was going. It just feels more solid than the other two, even if I still have the same issues.

Spoilers in the comments, but this book really pissed me off in a couple places. I do definitely remember liking it, and apparently I gave it a “pick” rating before, but now? Again, after growing up, I‘ve changed and so has my rating.

MsRadioSilence Why - *why* - did Nehemia have to die? Answer: she didn‘t. Chaol could‘ve died and Celaena could‘ve been radicalized that way, or Dorian. She had other friends besides Nehemia that could‘ve served the same purpose. Her death was just a waste of such a good character, and also dropped the diversity of the book back to zero. 3y
MsRadioSilence I also hate the casual mentions of new characters? And like, ones that had an IMPORTANCE to Celaena‘s backstory too. Sam wasn‘t mentioned until pg 70 in ToG, and Farran seemed like an afterthought. And some reviews I‘ve read discussed how Celaena killed Archer, and she 100% stabbed him in the heart at the end, not gutted him. 3y

I really hate when a book uses assault as a plot point, and then that plot point is dumb or doesn‘t go anywhere. I was really liking this book until then, so I‘m really disappointed Hendrix went there. Also, VERY startling to read your name in a book like this, haha.

I finished this one a while ago. I loved the story up until the end, where it just kinda... stopped? A wild, wonderful ride until then, but I wish there was more of a finale.

“In the language of the day, Miss Brookhants was a young widow and Miss Trills was her devoted companion. Her very, very dear friend. Her confidante.
Her bestie.*
*But, like, with benefits.” Pg. 111

Yet again, after this super gruesome death, and I‘m laughing?? I love this book already and there‘s over 500 pages left.

TW: AWFUL DEATH

“At some point Flo must have charged toward Clara, presumably to help her, and was at once wrapped in her own cloak of yellow jackets. And Charles---of course, fucking Charles---ran away.” Pg. 15

It‘s this really gruesome part and Danforth is just gonna make me laugh like that??

“*Did I tell you that Charles named his car America? I hate him so much.” Pg. 11

I am really enjoying this book so far. I was worried I wouldn‘t be able to remember all the names being thrown around, but the ones that are supposed to be memorable are given so much life that it‘s easy. I have no idea where this book is going and I‘m living for it. The writing is so quippy and funny!!

I really wanted to like this book, and I did more than The Babysitter‘s Coven, at least. I loved the LGBT representation, although I hope we get more Cal in the sequel. The reason it‘s so-so for me are 2 major things and 2 minor: 1) Veronica is the MOST ANNOYING character on the planet. That, and she doesn‘t respect boundaries AT ALL. No means no, unless you‘re Veronica, and then there‘s no such word. 2) I‘ll put below bc spoilers.

MsRadioSilence 2) You don‘t really get to know Hannah‘s dad before he‘s killed off. Hannah is so preoccupied with a lot of other things so he isn‘t really around. His importance is more told to you, rather than shown, so I feel like the book would‘ve been better if it had taken away from some of the high school drama to focus on family matters. 4y
