The Whispered Word | Ellery Adams
post image

It‘s been a few years since I read the first book in this series, and I was in the fence about it. I don‘t know if the story & writing have improved, or living through a stressful pandemic and other major life changes have made me more amenable to cozies, but I really enjoyed this one. The characters are really starting to grow on me.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Could be a bit of both 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2mo
Cinfhen You must be close to completion of #Booked2021?!? 2mo

BarbaraTheBibliophage My reading tastes have definitely changed in our pandemic world! So your thoughts seem logical to me. 👍🏻🤗 2mo

Libertie: A Novel | Kaitlyn Greenidge

#HooplaAudio #ToB22ShortList Enjoying the narration & story 🎧A freed black woman who practices medicine in NY, in the 1800‘s and her daughter & apprentice Libertie. Gorgeous cover 😍

Megabooks This is up soon for me as well. I need to come up with a review for 2mo
Cinfhen I‘m happy I‘m listening via #Hoopla @Megabooks because narration is great but story is a little odd 2mo
Megabooks Her debut was odd as well 2mo

Cinfhen I vaguely remember hearing about that book !! I‘m sort of surprised Libertie made the shortlist 🤷🏼‍♀️ @Megabooks (edited) 2mo
BarbaraBB I have my copy of this book too! First Matrix, then Libertie! 2mo
Megabooks Her debut was thought provoking but I wouldn‘t say I liked it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2mo
Megabooks I‘ll be surprised if I love this. 2mo
Cinfhen Yeah @Megabooks at this point it‘s more background noise / I‘ll be curious to hear your thoughts @BarbaraBB when u get to it!! 2mo
Cinfhen It‘s actually getting better @Megabooks / the beginning had magical realism which I don‘t like but now it‘s becoming more historical fiction, and I‘m liking that 2mo
Megabooks Then I‘m not sure you‘ll like this re: magical realism. I‘m enjoying it so far. 2mo
4thhouseontheleft I‘m reading this next, after I make it through my back-up #bakedgoodsoncover book since I bailed on the first one! 2mo
Cinfhen It‘s not my favorite from the #ToB22ShortList @4thhouseontheleft @Megabooks but the audio is well done. 2mo
KarenUK It is such a pretty cover 😍 2mo

This was supposed to be my pick for #booked2021 #bakedgoodsoncover but I will have to find another one.

When I found myself bored 10 chapters in, I decided to bail. I wS already annoyed by the use of the R word for a person with an intellectual disability.

Good thing I have a back up book for the baked goods prompt!

Scochrane26 The “r” word may bother us now, but the DSM still classified intellectual disability as mental retardation until around 2012-13. The agency I worked for at the time had to change their name because it was part of the title. 2mo
Cinfhen I bailed on this one very early on!!! Wise move 2mo
Prairiegirl_reading Ugh!! I‘ve had this on my shelf for years, I might as well give it away now. I can‘t stand that!!! 😡 2mo
Ruthiella I also didn‘t find this book scintillating. I don‘t think Bender‘s flat style combined with the fantastical is for me. 2mo

A quick, easy read! My choice for #bakedgoodsoncover for #booked2021, however this series would also work for #includesrecipes for #booked2022 as you can get some bonus donut recipes at the end of the book if you want to.

5 ⭐

BarbaraTheBibliophage Nice!! Can‘t go wrong with donuts! 3mo

Maybe I‘ve just gone off cosy mysteries? Or maybe I just didn‘t warm to the characters and found the humour more silly than amusing. It was also on the snooty side, and tending to play to stereotypes. And cozies with a baker/cafe-owning woman in a romance with a police/ex-police guy would need something else to stand out. In short,I wasn‘t a fan.

But hey, it had #bakedgoodsoncover #booked2021. And it has a great rating on GoodReads, so…

TrishB That‘s a funny thing to write on the end of the blurb on here! I missed your book report, no pressure obvs 😁 4mo
rockpools @TrishB I hadn‘t seen that - there‘s a certain tone there 😬. And ha! I‘ll get on it (sometime today) - I have another review needs writing first 😁. Happy Sunday Trish! 4mo
Cinfhen It has the #bakedgoods so there‘s that!!! 4mo
rabbitprincess Yes, to help it stand out it at least needed a bad pun in the title and some delicious recipes at the end! ? (I always laugh when cosy mysteries promise « delicious » recipes—what if I wanted terrible recipes?!) 4mo

This novel isn't anything mind-blowing but I still couldn't put it down: dishy, snarky, and full of people with too much money. ❤️

(Also after my trip to Europe was cancelled because of my broken ankle I thought I could go to the Hudson Valley, where this is set. Nope.)

Cinfhen Sorry about the ankle 😫😫😫 5mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage So sorry about the cancelled trip … but, wow, you knocked off lots of prompts with this one! 5mo

ferskner @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage thank you! It's been a hard summer but hopefully fall will come through for me, even if I'm inside for most of it. 5mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage Fingers crossed for you!! 🤞🏻🤞🏻 5mo
Chrissyreadit I would totally meet you in the Hudson Valley if you went on a trip there ( and wanted to meet up) how is your ankle? 4mo
ferskner @Chrissyreadit 100%!!!!!!! Re:ankle - I start physical therapy tomorrow, so there's progress! I'm excited because my ankle wants to stretch so much. 4mo
Chrissyreadit @ferskner Im glad you‘re ready to start PT! It‘s really helping me with my decomposing body 🤪 I hope we do get to meet up! I love NY and the Hudson Valley is beautiful. 4mo

Murder with Lemon Tea Cakes | Karen Rose Smith
post image

I've been enjoying this cozy mystery series this month. In a small town in Pennsylvania, Daisy runs a "tea garden" that seems to attract murders. There's lots of references to tea of various kinds (although no builders' tea I'm sorry to say?) and to the goodies they serve with it (recipes included!). Perfect switch-off material and perfect for #Booked2021 #BakedGoodsOnCover.

Cinfhen These look delightful 😃 5mo
Ruthiella Are you tempted to try any of the recipes? 🤔 5mo
CarolynM @Ruthiella Yes, some of them sound really good, and not difficult🙂 5mo

Amiable What is builder‘s tea? I‘m a tea person (hate coffee!) and haven‘t heard of that —I‘m intrigued! 😀 5mo
Freespirit Sounds perfect lock down reading!!! 5mo
CarolynM @Amiable Ordinary black tea brewed extra strong (usually with a teabag in a thick mug) and served with milk and lots of sugar - it's a British/Australian stereotype of how tradespeople like their tea. When you say you're a tea person, do you mean black tea or herbal? And have you ever tried a proper cafe latte? (edited) 5mo
CarolynM @Freespirit Yes, very untaxing🙂 How are things with you? Are you seeing a lot of Covid patients in your hospital? 5mo
Amiable @CarolynM I‘m a black tea gal—no herbal! That‘s not real tea. 😉 I‘m particularly fond of Chinese teas from the Yunnan province. I like it strong, but not too much sugar. I don‘t use tea bags —I buy loose leaf and brew it myself with my tea maker. And no lattes for me —when I say I hate coffee, I really mean it! I won‘t even do anything mocha because I don‘t want any hint of coffee flavor at all. 😖 5mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage Lovely pick! 5mo
CarolynM @Amiable I asked because in these books black tea, green tea, herbal teas and tisanes seem to be treated just as variations on a theme, which is absolutely not how people think of them here, and I wondered how widespread that thinking is in the US. If we say "a cup of tea" here, we mean black tea. But I don't mind some herbals sometimes and I love jasmine tea at yum cha ? 5mo
Freespirit Hi @CarolynM we have had plenty of suspected patients..treated as Covid until testing comes back but no positive cases at this stage. Last time we were expecting the worst and we only had a few patients off the Ruby Princess. This time not sure..hoping vaccines will make a difference🙏🏼 5mo

Katie's wedding is just a week away and everything is going well until her future SIL's ex husband shows up, and later is murdered. SIL found him and is a suspect. This is enough for Katie to get involved, but there is magical residue as well. I really enjoy this series, and I really enjoy it on audio as I really like the narrator.

I finalized my June reading totals this morning. Not bad, though I really need to focus on my challenges!

I also submitted my 2nd quarter form for #Booked2021 , having read 2 titles for that challenge:

#BakedGoodsOnCover - A Sheetcake Named Desire by Jacklyn Brady

#PoetryOrWrittenInVerse - The Selected Poems of Emily Dickinson

Cinfhen Thanks for your submission 😊 Good luck 🍀 7mo

I actually read this one at the beginning of the year, but I‘m still working through my list of books to post about. Really enjoyed this first book in the series and will be continuing with it. There was a little bit of everything. Some funny parts, some sad and a definite want for the main character to succeed. #bakedgoodsoncover #booked2021 #l #litsyatoz #seriesread2021 #doublespin #february
