I‘m usually a big fan of spy thrillers, espionage etc in a novel but this was just too slow and painful for me. I just couldn‘t stomach more than the first half, so I bailed. Maybe I‘ll watch the film, if I‘ve got a couple of hours on a rainy afternoon ☔️

This book was between a pick and a so-so for me. There were certain points where I couldn‘t put it down and others when I would space off in the middle of a page or chapter. Also, since many characters go by multiple names I sometimes had trouble keeping track of who was who. I‘m looking forward to watching the movie and will likely read the rest of the trilogy, though.

I don‘t read many spy/espionage thrillers. After reading this book, I‘m not sure why! Slow to start as the stage is set, but then the action and intrigue take off. The pace doesn‘t slow down until the last page, which sets the stage for the next book in the trilogy. FYI, contains graphic violence & sex. Bonus: one recipe at the end of each chapter for the foods consumed in the novel (although they‘re vague w/ no measurements). ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

This is what my day off has looked like: my book, my dog, my couch, with cough drops and tissues nearby. A day of rest while I try to kick this cold. I even shirked my mom duties today and had hubby bring dinner home for the kids. I can‘t remember the last time I truly took a sick day. 🤧😷 Thank goodness it‘s Friday!

I am about halfway through this book and think I‘ve figured out who the mole is. Now, to race to the finish to see if I‘m right!

My 13 year old daughter gave me the second book in this series for Christmas. She got it from the local “Five Below” (like a dollar store but everything is $5 or below) and did not know it was the second in a trilogy, and I love her for it. ❤️🥰 So, I borrowed the first book from the local library via Overdrive and I am starting it today, so I can read the book she gave me next.

It took me forever to finish this! It was interesting but it wasn‘t one of those stories I couldn‘t put down. I listened to a good part in audio which helped with all the Russian pronunciations. Since it took so long for me to finish this one I wasn‘t going to bother with the next one but Red Sparrow kind of ended on a cliffhanger so now I need to know what happens next! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

This book is definitely not a typical spy novel. If your idea of the spy life is James Bond, this may not appeal to you. It goes quite in-depth about spy jargon and is probably more realistic than most spy novels. I was torn between So-So or Pick because the use of Intel. Agency terms and Russian phrases caused me to look meanings up several times. However, the story is too entertaining to not give it a pick.

I really liked this book in the beginning. It was moving quickly and really got me interested in the characters and the story. But then, it just kept getting more complicated and there were infinitely more characters to keep up with. By the end, I felt myself getting confused and I had a hard time staying interested. I liked this, but I don‘t feel like it needed to be as long as it was.

ReadZenRites I admit that I paused 1/4 way through, thinking I‘d go back, but nothing in the plot is enough of a “must know” to draw my attention back. 😟 1y
Victoriahoperose @ReadZenRites I don‘t think I‘m going to read the rest of the series. It just didn‘t wow me by the end. 1y
ReadZenRites I wonder if it would have been a better story if the author put it all in one book instead of trying to stretch it out into a trilogy. 1y
Victoriahoperose @ReadZenRites I agree with that. My biggest complaint was that after a certain point, it felt like it just went on forever. And then the end was almost anticlimactic. Maybe if it was altogether, it would have been more entertaining? 1y

#AudioPuzzling along tonight(or early morning)with Red Sparrow by Jason Matthews, the series that the movie is based on. Obviously, considering the title page is the movie poster. Really enjoying it so far, if this is at all accurate, I‘m terrified of the future which will include a worse Cold War than the last one. Some seriously scary stuff.☢️

Maewyn I need to do some audio crocheting before the busy season at work starts. What are you doing the puzzle on? 1y
Lizpixie @Maewyn my iPad. It‘s an app called Magic Puzzles & it‘s brilliant. You have options of either small free packs or the free monthly packs of mystery puzzles(you don‘t know what the picture is), you can buy packs of between 25-50 puzzles based on a theme or you can pay a large fee to unlock every puzzle. Plus you can use your own photos to make puzzles. And you earn coins for finishing one, the smaller the pieces you opt for, the more you earn. 1y

I know it's the movie tie-in cover- please forgive me, but it's Jennifer Lawrence, enough said. Quite a deviation from the YA phase I've been in, but so far so good as long as I can keep all the Russian names straight. I remember a similar predicament with Crime and Punishment. 🤔

This is a great yarn about the CIA and its Russian counterpart waging a secret war. At the center is Dominica, a Russian agent, who has fallen in love with Nate from the CIA. There are myriad subplots and Matthews is a master at creating memorable supporting characters. There‘s plenty of action and intrigue as the agencies move their human pawns around a global chessboard. There are two more books in the trilogy and the second is just as good!

Right book, wrong time. I like my spy novels to be a bit faster-paced. Fans of Le Carre and Martin Cruz Smith will enjoy this one. Good writing, but I just couldn‘t get into it lately. I‘ll try again another time as I‘m sure it picks up as it goes along, but there was way too much initial set-up for me. I definitely wanna see the movie though!

I am going to rate this well because I found so much to digest. Pun intended. Too much to break down here in 451. I read the other 2 in the series as well but it went down hill fast. I have to wonder if these were rushed because of a/the movie deal? It FEELS like everything that could have been - just was not. By book 3 I wanted to give Jason Matthews a hug & help him look for his soul. Or maybe he is laughing to the bank. Could go both ways.

All in all, a solid beach read, not a real PICK but not SO-SO either! I LOVED that the author (former CIA operative) used Putin as a character in his story! That ego!!! Fascinating info about Russian/US spy networks! A believable plot but needed more character depth.

I finished this just over a week ago and really liked it. It had a brisk pace and the characters had good dimension. It had some technical jargon that I didn‘t know but was able to get with context; I blame that on this being written by someone who is a CIA agent first and an author second. The main characters were flawed but likable and the good vs evil was very blurred at times. I‘ve never read a spy novel before and have been wondering how ⬇️⬇️

TommieMarie74 realistic some of it was. Are there spies among us all the time and we don‘t know? Is espionage really going on all the time? How would we ever really know? I also saw the movie last weekend and enjoyed it as well. I would say it was about 15% similar to the book. Most of it deviates greatly, from major changes to characters, relationship dynamics, and the ending. It made some scenes seem gratuitous when they were very important in the book. 2y
LMJenkins Great review - agree with everything. Just listened to this recently and liked it a lot. Haven‘t seen movie yet. Thinking of reading the second in the trilogy soon. 2y
TommieMarie74 @LMJenkins Thanks! Based on the alternate ending, I‘m guessing there won‘t be more movies. The book also showed Putin in a not-so-good light and that was missing in the movies. That also leads me to believe the movie will be a stand alone. But I could be completely wrong. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I hope to start book two soon. (edited) 2y

This one started off slow for me bit once I was hooked it was great. I loved all the spy intrigue and the fact that the writer was in the CIA hopefully adds some truth and accuracy. I could have done without the romance because that felt forced but otherwise it was a great spy novel. Now to see the movie!
