Second book by Sedaris I'm reading because some members of my non-fiction book club love him... Well, another pan for me. I really don't understand the hype. His stories aren't interesting, I don't find him funny, you don't get any enlightenment from his stories, no “Interesting, I've never thought of this that way“ moment.
Well, now I know that Sedaris is really not my cup of tea.

My first David Sedaris read. Decently quirky and entertaining. I probably enjoyed 70% of the stories - especially those about his encounters with the French language.

I had been pretty good about not taking anything from the free book table at work for awhile, but I crossed some things off my list on Friday and felt I earned a treat #BookHaul

I actually switched the hard copy for audio and enjoyed listening to David Sedaris read. His humor is a little quirky and I think hearing it definitely adds something. At first I thought it was a little *too* quirky but by the time he arrived in France and began to struggle with the language, I was rolling. There will definitely be more Sedaris books in my future!

I read this book as part of the Goodreads 2023 reading challenge. I guess I‘ve found another genre that I‘m not particularly fond of. Maybe this type of comedy didn‘t translate well into the written form? Parts were funny, I did enjoy reading about the authors struggles with the French language. Other than that, this book just wasn‘t for me.

This book was too familiar to me, from his childhood visits to a speech pathologist to becoming an "ex-pat" (that term also always felt wrong to me, so I am happy he brought it up). Instead of French, I was taking Italian classes, which I had to pass to be a resident. I could relate to so many of his stories. Laughed a lot! ♥️

I love everything this man writes. Hilarious and thoughtful. I prefer the stories from his childhood over the ones about his time in France and for that reason, I enjoyed Naked more. Nonetheless, Sedaris has quickly become one of my favorite authors!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘ve read this 5, maybe 6, times. Idk, I‘ve lost count. Sedaris is my go-to when I‘m stressed and want to revisit (what feels like) an old friend. His essays about learning French are some of his very best! I die.

Had the absolute best time last night out to dinner and then to see DAVID SEDARIS with my mom ♥️
He was fabulous!! I spent the day leaving up to seeing him listening to the tagged book which covers his early days abroad learning French.
At the event, he read several essays from his upcoming Happy-Go-Lucky (releasing next month!), other essays and journal entries and even plugged another author — Patricia Lockwood. The best time ♥️

‘Me Talk Pretty One Day‘ is my first David Sedaris read. No recounts of human-nests fashioned from hair or even bananas that resemble a turd more than a banana could make me put this down. The lesson to be learned from this book is that it is indeed acceptable to think you are smarter than everyone, because you‘re probably right. 5/5.

Listening to this and lots of laugh out loud moments. Sedaris never fails to entertain.

Listening to David Sedaris‘ dark humor never fails to make me smile! 🎧

Incredible book by a very clever writer. The humor is sharp, but still playful, with some broader commentary at times occuring. A must read for fans of humor in writing.

I just don't know what to think here.

Another #NewYearWhoDis recommendation from @meghathecloud! Unfortunately, I didn't find this as enjoyable as some of Sedaris's other collections, but there were a few amusing moments. I went back and forth between the physical book and the audiobook, and definitely enjoyed listening to the stories more than reading them!

I am amazed at Sedaris‘s knack for being cutting without being cruel, to tease but never bully. Every critical observation he offers is laced with love and LOLs. Trump‘s callous “It is what it is” comment reminded me of what David Sedaris signed in my book a few years back. I think we all share that sentiment.

Fantastic read! Megan lent this to me probably ten years ago and I never got around to reading it. Found it in Benin and when I picked it up I couldn‘t put it down. Wonderfully funny and ridiculous and pessimistic and snarky stories. Stories about learning French and living somewhere you don‘t speak the language. I adored it and him. One of those books that make you want to be best friends with the author. He seems impossible

I was sort of stumped on the #Booked2020 #MakesYouLOL prompt when it hit me.... I could relisten to this!

Had started this one a long while ago and by the time I picked it back up, I had forgotten where I was, so I just started it over again. Sedaris always has the ability to make me laugh so hard, I‘m doubled over, and this one was no exception. The chapter “I Almost Saw This Girl Get Killed,” despite its gruesome headline, was hilarious. Highly recommend.

David Sedaris is a talent and his skill to elevate the everyday is inspired. Some stories are better than others, of course, but I knew I could count on him not only for good storytelling, made even better when listening to him tell his stories in his own voice #Audiobook #Audible, but also for a few good laughs, something I desperately needed this past week.

I needed some humor today and David Sedaris always delivers. 💗📖

Waiting for the rest of my group on our annual shopping trip. We hit 3 book stores and I bought 10 books. Eeeeek. I should have been Christmas shopping.

Ready to jump into this essay collection - looks funny and breezy, but still down-to-earth. I can tell I‘ll like it because the author is already calling out toxic masculinity and I‘m only on pg 5 ... 😂🗣🙇🏻‍♀️

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ After reading Zuckoff‘s amazing 9/11 book this week, I desperately needed something funny and comforting. And what‘s better than a favorite? This was my 3rd or 4th time reading this collection. Sedaris making fun of his French-learning process slays me every time.

Did not live up to the hype

I didn't love this one. Some of the stories were interesting, but overall they fell flat for me. I think that Sedaris probably is just not for me.

Opened up this book at bedtime last night and found a left-behind bookmark. I'm not even sure where I got this book, but the bookmark was a nice bonus! #currentlyreading #usedbooks #crafty

David Sedaris had me LMAO! 🤣😂🤣His deadpan delivery and astute observations were side splitting funny. I‘m not sure if living overseas makes me feel an instant kinship but I wept while listening to him tackle his French class lessons & eavesdropping on American tourists. He‘s the Greek Orthodox Jerry Seinfeld. Highly recommend the audio 🎧

Listening to David Sedaris recall his “time” spent in forced speech therapy and taking guitar lessons is hilarious 😂🤣😂😂I literally have tears rolling down my face.

⭐️5/5 Took me a minute to get use to the short stories, but I loved his style, his voice for the audio, and the humor in the stories. Definitely recommend.

Colour me somewhat surprised. I mean, I know I'm well read, but English is not my first language. Where do you fall on the curve?

Whenever my husband hears my audiobooks, he always asks why I listen to the exact same person over and over again. Usually he‘s just crazy, but I would say he has become familiar with Sedaris‘s voice, given how often I listen to his audiobooks. 😂 This one focuses on Sedaris‘s move to France and is just as funny as his others.

I think I gave this a fair chance, as I am on page 96, but I am just not enjoying this book at all. I‘ve resolved to abandon more books in 2019, which may seem like a strange resolution, but I need to stop wasting time on things like this. Life‘s too short. I‘d have no problem turning off a movie I wasn‘t enjoying. I need to better extend that to closing the book.
