The Republic of Thieves
The Republic of Thieves | Scott Lynch
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER“A bright new voice in the fantasy genre” (George R. R. Martin), acclaimed author Scott Lynch continues to astound and entertain with his thrillingly inventive, wickedly funny, suspense-filled adventures featuring con artist extraordinaire Locke Lamora. And The Republic of Thieves is his most captivating novel yet.   With what should have been the greatest heist of their career gone spectacularly sour, Locke and his trusted partner, Jean, have barely escaped with their lives. Or at least Jean has. But Locke is slowly succumbing to a deadly poison that no alchemist or physiker can cure. Yet just as the end is near, a mysterious Bondsmage offers Locke an opportunity that will either save him or finish him off once and for all.   Magi political elections are imminent, and the factions are in need of a pawn. If Locke agrees to play the role, sorcery will be used to purge the venom from his body—though the process will be so excruciating he may well wish for death. Locke is opposed, but two factors cause his will to crumble: Jean’s imploring—and the Bondsmage’s mention of a woman from Locke’s past: Sabetha. She is the love of his life, his equal in skill and wit, and now, his greatest rival.   Locke was smitten with Sabetha from his first glimpse of her as a young fellow orphan and thief-in-training. But after a tumultuous courtship, Sabetha broke away. Now they will reunite in yet another clash of wills. For faced with his one and only match in both love and trickery, Locke must choose whether to fight Sabetha—or to woo her. It is a decision on which both their lives may depend.PRAISE FOR SCOTT LYNCHThe Republic of Thieves   “Fast paced, fun, and impossible to put down . . . Locke and company remain among the most engaging protagonists in fantasy.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)   “The Republic of Thieves has all the colorful action, witty repartee, and devious scheming that fans of the series have come to expect.”—Wired   “A fantasy world unique among its peers . . . If you’re looking for a great new fantasy series this is one you won’t want to miss. . . . In a word: AWESOME!”—SF RevuRed Seas Under Red Skies   “Lynch hasn’t merely imagined a far-off world, he’s created it, put it all down on paper—the smells, the sounds, the people, the feel of the place. The novel is a virtuoso performance, and sf/fantasy fans will gobble it up.”—Booklist (starred review)“Red Seas Under Red Skies firmly proves that Scott Lynch isn’t a one-hit wonder. . . . It’ll only be a matter of time before Scott Lynch is mentioned in the same breath as George R. R. Martin and Steven Erikson.”—Fantasy Book Critic   “Grand, grandiose, grandiloquent . . . No critic is likely to fault Lynch in his overflowing qualities of inventiveness, audacious draftsmanship, and sympathetic characterization.”—LocusThe Lies of Locke Lamora   “Right now, in the full flush of a second reading, I think The Lies of Locke Lamora is probably in my top ten favorite books ever. Maybe my top five. If you haven’t read it, you should. If you have read it, you should probably read it again.”—Patrick Rothfuss, New York Times bestselling author of The Name of the WindFrom the Hardcover edition.

This series is phenomenal! Why did I wait so long to read book 3? I guess maybe because I knew the next book wasn‘t released yet...

The craftiness and cunning of these characters floors me every time! The political intrigue is genius! Plus the stories are really fun, and I love that the Gentlemen Bastards have their own unnamed god of thieves.

I loved seeing Sabetha and Locke‘s backstory. So good! Such tension!

@Mitch have you read these?

julesG I haven't started this series yet. I want to wait until I can read them all in one go. 1mo
TsundokuAleax My brothers have been on me about reading these.😳 1mo
Soubhiville @julesG and @TsundokuAleax I‘m not sure if he‘s planning to stop at 4 books? But each one is a pretty complete story in itself... although I think it‘s always clear there‘s a sequel coming. They‘re so good! 1mo

It‘s also nice to have Jean and Locke keeping me company in the glass studio. Fantasy Audiobook #chunksters rock!

I liked this book. But honestly, it‘s was just north of a meh for me. The ending is probably what saved it from that fate because I‘m 550 pages there wasn‘t a lot that I found exciting or compelling. The romance angle did absolutely nothing for me and the political side wasn‘t executed as well as it has been in other books. Right now I‘m debating on whether or not I‘ll continue with this series. It joins the Kingkiller Chronicles on that list.

TrishB I think I read the next one, then didn‘t bother any further. 12mo

This is taking me forever. As has been true for all of the books in this series, it would seems all of the action and excitement is saved for the end. I‘ve still got 200 pages to go. Nothing like 500 pages of build up

It took me forever to get through river of teeth, despite the fact hat it was only 160 pages. Work was crazy this week, I didn‘t even have a chance to take my lunch break most days, but things should settle down this week and I‘m hoping to get through this in a timely fashion

The latest in the Gentlemen Bastards series, where fantasy meets crime caper. Lynch really tells two stories here, and the continual back and forth slows the narrative down a bit. It's also considerably darker than the previous two as the creepy Bondsmagi play a greater role. Still great fun though.

Dragon I've read the first two but saving this one for just the right time 😀 2y
Vansa Is this as good as the first two ? I read the reviews and seemed mixed. 2y
Minervasbutler @Vansa I enjoyed Vol 2 the most cos it's where the Locke-Jean friendship gets played out best. This one is good, but it's essentially two stories, one 10 years earlier than the second, which makes it a bit slow moving imo 2y

Despite the fact that the character of Sabetha was quite disappointing, and Jean's role was reduced, Lynch once again delivered in impeccable plot, worldbuilding and lead-up to the next book. What I love about his characters is that no matter what awesome skills they possess they are still very much fallible. And in my opinion all three books show this. Also we find out some spine-tingling facts about Karthain and the Magi.

Finished this thrilling fantasy over #booksandcoffee this morning. Lynch crafted compelling characters in the Gentleman Bastards, and the latest entry does NOT disappoint. Magic, fisticuffs, and skulduggery bind Locke and Jean vs. Sabetha in a contest to rig the Karthain elections. Every page crackles with wit and double-cross as the Bastards vie to best each other and the powers that would use them as pawns. This book = SO much fun 👏👏👏

Not a bad read by any stretch, but I did not enjoy this one as much as the previous two Gentleman Bastard books. The schemes didn't feel as grand, the interludes wore on me and I wanted more Jean & Locke banter. But I did enjoy Sabetha and her romance with Locke more than I thought I would!
