The Lies of Locke Lamora
The Lies of Locke Lamora | Scott Lynch
Remarkable . . . Scott Lynch's first novel, The Lies of Locke Lamora, exports the suspense and wit of a cleverly constructed crime caper into an exotic realm of fantasy, and the result is engagingly entertaining. The Times(London)An orphan's life is harshand often shortin the mysterious island city of Camorr. But young Locke Lamora dodges death and slavery, becoming a thief under the tutelage of a gifted con artist. As leader of the band of light-fingered brothers known as the Gentleman Bastards, Locke is soon infamous, fooling even the underworld's most feared ruler. But in the shadows lurks someone still more ambitious and deadly. Faced with a bloody coup that threatens to destroy everyone and everything that holds meaning in his mercenary life, Locke vows to beat the enemy at his own brutal gameor die trying.Praise for The Lies of Locke LamoraFresh, original, and engrossing . . . gorgeously realized.George R. R. MartinRight now, in the full flush of a second reading, I think The Lies of Locke Lamora is probably in my top ten favorite books ever. Maybe my top five. If you haven't read it, you should. If you have read it, you should probably read it again.Patrick Rothfuss, New York Times bestselling author of The Name of the WindA unique fantasy milieu peopled by absorbing, colorful characters . . . December #bookspin is ready!

Can‘t believe it‘s the last one of the year. I spent way too long figuring which reads I wanted to end the year with. Thanks to the long weekend, I now have most of the library books sitting on my digital shelf in preparation.

Final list of 2021 @TheAromaofBooks 😊

So, everybody's fuzzing about Locke Lamora. I was pretty sure that this wouldn't be a book for me. But when a fellow challenge participant asked to read it together, I was intrigued. One can still DNF after a while, right?

Well... Turns out that I listened to the 25 hours audio book within no time. Now I know what the fuzz is all about, and I'm totally fuzzing along. I was so captivated and couldn't get myself to stop. This Locke guy is such ⬇

Jari-chan an addictive fellow. I even stopped watching Classic Who to follow Locke and his gang. Yep, totally into the fuzz.

#BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks #SeriesRead2021 @TheSpineView

This was a re-read for me so I can finally read the next two books. I enjoyed this even more this time around. I feel like I picked up on the details more. This is such a great heist story and the world and the characters are excellent.

I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.

Soubhiville I love this series! 3mo

Really good book, cool world building, exciting and engaging. Lots of crazy situations and thief stuff. Unfortunate that these books have been hard to find. Hopefully will continue the series in the future.

An excellent fantasy series!

I‘ve read through the three books available and hope Lynch is hard at work on the fourth book! 📚

CrowCAH @Kimberlone a thief and heist type of story, with darker undertones. We‘ll develop characters that I felt for during their triumphs and setbacks. 6mo

An amazing read.

I've read over a hundred pages, and I just cannot get into this book. I wish I could, but I am not finding it compelling enough to keep my attention. I'm curious about the world and such, but there just isn't a spark for me. Maybe I'll try it again someday, but there are too many other books calling to me at the moment.

CrowCAH I‘m sorry to hear it didn‘t intrigue you. I LOVE this series, already read all three books released; the absurd language taunts and the schemes upon schemes are what hooked me. There‘s also a very real human aspect to the characters, they have emotions. 9mo
LazyOwl I read this a few years ago and did not enjoy, good to know I'm not the only one who couldn't get into this. 9mo

I really loved the Gentleman Bastards. I felt their pain, celebrated their victories, marvelled at the deceptions... absolutely adored this book.

For fear that I will cross the line between review and spoiler I will say no more but that I highly recommend this book.

Just having a sort out and came across a travel diary I‘d kept whilst we were on our honeymoon. Had a little chuckle at my enthusiasm to find a LIBRARY in the hotel!

Edit: The tagged book was why I was reading, though I found The Girl with All the Gifts on the library and read that too.

#LastFirst - last book of the year was The Iron Hunt, which was eh. I think my first book will be the tagged. I started it yesterday but put it down for a book I‘d actually finish.

Update, for those following the drama: the Amazon rep lied to me outright; they DID deduct the cost of shipping the return from my refund, and I have no recourse. I wish I‘d just kept the extra copy and given it to someone who would have appreciated it. Fucking Amazon, every time.

RainyDayReading Ugh. Amazon is such a mess. 11mo
TheAromaofBooks That's so weird. I've returned loads of stuff to Amazon without trouble - now they don't even have me box it up, I just print off the scan sheet and take that along with the item to a UPS store and hand it over & they do the rest! 11mo
ravenlee @TheAromaofBooks yep, they sent me the label and I dropped it off at the UPS store, and today was notified of my (reduced) refund. Not remotely worth the trouble. 11mo

I wasn't too crazy about this book. I felt like the story was overly complicated in some places. I felt like Locke was supposed to be similar character to Sanderson's Kelsier. Where Kelsier feels clever AND human. Locke felt a bit like a character where the writer had made a decision to make him clever and that's it. Ofcourse he has also other personality traits but he doesn't feel human enough to compete in the same category as Kelsier. 🤔

#20series20days @Andrew65

Locke Lamora and his crew of Gentlemen Bastards plot and scheme like no other band of misfits I‘ve ever known. His childhood reminds me just a bit of Oliver Twist, in a good way, but these are mainly his adult adventures of trying to rob from the rich. Scott Lynch is a master storyteller!

(I‘m afraid I must have lent out Red Seas, book 2... I don‘t know where it is! May have to buy another copy!)

Ruthiella I‘ve only read the first book but agree that Lynch channeled Dickens for the Artful Dodger/child thief upbringing. 😀 1y

This is the first book I thought of for the prompt #heist. What if the Artful Dodger grew up on an alien planet now occupied by humans in a pseudo-renaissance society and then formed an Oceans Eleven type crew to con the rich? This is the first book in a series, featuring the Gentlemen Bastards. It was a lot of fun, though I‘ve not yet managed to read on in the series. 😬

I haven‘t been on social media much this week so I nearly missed this Readathon. Supposed to have thunderstorms here all weekend so I‘m hoping to do some reading. My goals are to:
•Finish the tagged book
•Finish Binti
•Finish Dinosaur
•Read more of Alehouse
•Start Waste Tide
•Finish The Merciful Crow
•Finish Death in the City of Light
.....fingers crossed I guess.

Sibling Reading Challenge 2020! My brother and I are both readers, and although our reading tastes don't always overlap, we recommend books back and forth a lot...although he does a much better job than I do at actually reading the recommended books. So here's where the reading challenge comes in! My brother chose 6 books for me to read (top right) and for every 2 that I read, he'll have to read one book from the stack I made (top left).

AutumnRLS Lies of Locklamora is one of my very favorites. If you liked Six of Crows you'll definitely love it! 2y
Butterfinger What an awesome challenge. 2y
ozma.of.oz Elantris is excellent! And Trail of Lightning and Six of Crows are great choices. 2y

Oof this took me a solid month to read. It‘s hard to describe why I didn‘t like it all that much. I‘m not a prude (I love a good “that‘s what she said” joke) but all the characters were just a bunch of gross guys and I kind of hated them all. And Lynch could have easily shaved off 200 pages. There was not enough plot for 500 pages. However, I get to finish the series thanks to book club 😔 Thank goodness for audiobooks.

I‘m pretty sure these are my #SantaThing books...🙈🥴 There‘s no note, no remark on the delivery note...🧐

I‘m very intrigued by the both books, can‘t wait to read them!

Deifio Cool! 😍 I read both of them and they are both great! They both have a heist movie thing going. But very different settings and if course Pratchett's humour is unique. Enjoy reading! And btw I hope you find out who sent them! 2y

A fun revisit with an old favorite. If you love high fantasy and great world-building, Scott Lynch, IMO, is a better writer than Martin of Rothfuss. And the good thing about his Gentleman Bastards series is that they can serve as stand-alones so you don't have to wait for freaking years to find out what happens (I'm talking to you, GRRM...and Rothfuss) .

#MayMovieMagic #LustForLife

Finished this #audiobook today; quite the ride! For a second, I thought Locke was done for, but then I remembered there was a sequel, so it helped me continue reading, knowing it would turn out well - he lusted for life and so was able to defeat the bad guy.

I passed the book along to a fellow coworker who enjoys fantasy novels and still only reads paper books! Made my day 😊

AlaMich This was so good on audio! Great narrator! 3y

Just finished this monster and I‘ve got to say that while it had excellent banter that was marvelous and I loooooved the heist and conning elements; I can‘t say this was a winner for me 🤭.
The crassness and language, the gore and death and constant angst I experienced at the hands of this book landed it at a solid ⭐️⭐️for me self.
I‘ve read it, it took twists and turns I didn‘t expect, and now I can move on. I probably won‘t pick up the sequel.
