Looks like this is my #DoubleSpin for the month; I already got started on it, which is nice (albeit stalled out a bit due to bewilderment about the setting). Work: A History of How We Spend Our Time by James Suzman is my #BookSpin.

And here's my bookspin bingo card... I did already get started on reading for February, and include some of those books on my list, so I have a start. (Don't worry, I didn't peek at the numbers before I made the list.)

Who‘s ready for #NewZealand in February? What do you plan to read?

@Catsandbooks has posted a lot of options on her StoryGraph #foodandlit challenge:

https://app.thestorygraph.com/reading_challenges/e03136df-4623-4395-8388-39cf041...

Catsandbooks I actually wasn't the one to add the books to the Storygraph challenge. I've just added books to the Google doc 2mo
Texreader @Catsandbooks Ah!! Well thanks to the wonderful folks who did! 2mo
ChasingOm I added some. 😄 I‘m a StoryGraph newbie but I love tracking challenges there! 2mo
Dilara I am planning on picking up The Matriarch by Witi Ihimaera again. Hopefully, this time, I'll make it to the end 😁 2mo

This was on my tbr pile of books I bought at an op (thrift) shop because it looked interesting… not sure how long I‘ve had this one - but it absolutely sent me down an internet rabbit hole to discover what I could about Ruth M. Hawker - which I‘ve since added to her GR page. Put my GR librarian powers to good use.

I‘ve never seen this kind of notice before! Truely a glimpse into a different time.

Pickpick

A rather gorgeous slice of life fiction about town girl, Heather, who gets sent to spend her holidays with her uncle who lives on a remote outback farm when her mother is called away to take care of a sick relative. Heather makes a friend, learns to ride a horse, writes a brilliant essay about her holiday and overcomes several sticky situations with good cheer.

Originally published in 1950 - this is a nostalgic look at (white) rural life in 🇦🇺

thegirlwiththelibrarybag 📕 Heather at Magpie Creek by Ruth M. Hawker, first published in 1950 by Geoffrey Cumberlege for Oxford University Press. 2mo
LeahBergen This sounds like my cup of tea! 🥰 2mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @LeahBergen, probably not the easiest to find - I bought it in an op shop ages ago because I thought the cover was cute. 2mo

LeahBergen Oh, I just realized that this is by the same author as the cute vintage children‘s book that @CarolynM sent to me! You can see my post here: 2mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @LeahBergen, oooh! That‘s too good! Would you like this one too? I wasn‘t planning on keeping it, I‘d be happy to send it on. 2mo
LeahBergen Oh, you‘re so thoughtful! I live in Canada so it would be too pricey to send it along to me. Thanks for the kind offer, though! 😘😘 2mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @LeahBergen, I don‘t think it would be too bad (looking at the Australia Post website) - so I really don‘t mind. I‘m hoping to visit Canada this year ☺️ my leave has all been approved but November feels very far away at this point. 2mo
CarolynM @LeahBergen How fun! I‘d never heard of her when I found the Wombat Flat book, but apparently she published 14 books! A name to look out for in the second hand bookshops🙂 2mo
LeahBergen @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I would love to have it! And I‘ll send you a little something in return. 😊 2mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @CarolynM, there is precious little information about her online, the State Library of South Australia looks like they‘ve got almost all of her books. Not the easiest to access! Makes you wonder how many authors (and lady authors especially) have been almost completely vanished without a trace. 2mo
LeahBergen @thegirlwiththelibrarybag @CarolynM This seems like a common occurrence for many mid 20th century children‘s authors. 😕 2mo

I thought about flowers for #autumnplease day 9 and my brain went straight to ‘what‘s really horrific and scary and involves flowers?‘ So we ended up with A Rose For Emily 😬 this book was in a short story collection I won as a prize at school when I was 12 and I LOVED it. I was a ghoulish little thing lol
