Book Scavenger
Book Scavenger | Jennifer Chambliss Bertman
For twelve-year-old Emily, the best thing about moving to San Francisco is that it's the home city of her literary idol: Garrison Griswold, book publisher and creator of the online sensation Book Scavenger (a game where books are hidden in cities all over the country and clues to find them are revealed through puzzles). Upon her arrival, however, Emily learns that Griswold has been attacked and is now in a coma, and no one knows anything about the epic new game he had been poised to launch. Then Emily and her new friend James discover an odd book, which they come to believe is from Griswold himself, and might contain the only copy of his mysterious new game. Racing against time, Emily and James rush from clue to clue, desperate to figure out the secret at the heart of Griswold's new gamebefore those who attacked Griswold come after them too.

What a fun bookish adventure this was! I read Escape from Mr. Lemoncello‘s Library earlier in the year, and was underwhelmed—but this one was what I‘d hoped for out of Lemoncello. Characters with depth, fun puzzles, a nice little mystery, and some sweet themes about family and friendship. I would have loved this when I was 10 or 12, and I really enjoyed it now as an adult.

megnews I‘m reading this for #mgmarch. 3y

I spent my morning filling some little free pantries. When I found out 2 had Little Free libraries, well I had to take restock. Pictured in the top row is the Graham elementary food pantry. They don‘t have a little library, but it‘s an elementary school so I left some books anyway.

The second row is at one of the high schools. Their LFL is Nice. Metal coated and they may sure it‘s hard to damage. They had some books...⬇️

LibrarianRyan But as you can see it was kind of sad. So I stocked them up on some YA and some favorite adult from Litsy that would be okay for YA. Our first stop Washington also had a LFL (I forgot my phone and didn‘t realize it til first stop). There LFL was well stocked so I didn‘t leave anything. It also had a broken door but the person who made it was already aware and was coming to fix it. The liquid nails got to hot and came alert. 4y
Trashcanman Make sure you leave Dickens out there. Don't ruin reading for others! 4y
LibrarianRyan @Trashcanman I would have to buy dickens to leave it. Sorry my money is better spent on other things. I just left stuff from my done pile that I could grab quickly. I wasn‘t originally planning on going with Josh but hey it was fun and 2 birds. 😁. Now if I could just get my dad to build mine. 4y

The Book Scavenger, written by Jennifer Chambliss Bertman and illustrated by Sarah Watts, is a (RF) story about a girl Emily and the adventure she finds after moving with her family to a new city, San Fransisco. With help of her new neighbor, she tries to solve and connect clues from the game The Book Scavenger after its creator and her favorite author is attacked. This leads to a whole new mystery about his attack.

WoodsKatie This leads to a whole new mystery about his attack. The whole story is thrilling and great for students in 5–8th grade. The Book Scavenger has received over 35 awards, including being a New York Times Bestseller. In a classroom, this book can be used as a LC or IR. This book satisfies UDL guidelines 6.1 and 6.3 as well as ESOL strategies 4 and 5. 5y
WoodsKatie A high quality resource I found was on the authors website (jenniferchamblissbertman.com) and she has multiple resources for each of the books in the series, such as a teachers guide for the book (http://jenniferchamblissbertman.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/TeachersGuide.pdf) which include vocabulary words, common core activities, and guided lessons. #LAE3414sp19 5y
DrSpalding Are we still working on a project here? Make sure you bring back the book and let‘s have a chat! I would really like this to work out that we could create a book scavenger hunt here! Maybe we could present it as a professional development offering… Knight Ed talks? 5y
bobarlotte I love this book- it's so very good and actually what had me searching online for online book communities because Book Scavenger (the game) doesn't exist. And that's what led me to Litsy. I've also read the sequels. This is such a great series. 5y

I‘ve been pretty good about not buying a ton of books & reading down my TBR this year, but I may have undone all that good work yesterday with Book Outlet‘s Boxing Day sale.😬I couldn‘t resist these prices—I spent $37 & got 12 books. (And that Madeleine L‘Engle bio—😍) This is half the haul: stay tuned for the rest!

Also—I meant to buy Ink and Bone by Rachel Caine & accidentally bought Ink and Bone by Lisa Unger instead. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Giveaway, anyone?

4⭐️ A fun mix of the Caulder books by Blue Balliett. Willy Wonka, and Mr. Lemoncello. It‘s a mystery, but it‘s a treasure hunt. I really liked how the author used real events such as the book Masquerade and its treasure hunt, as well as real characters like Poe, Hammett, and Karuack. This fun romp was not as fast paced as Lemoncello, but allowed itself to be funny in ways that are missing from Blue. I look forward to reading the sequels.

Often I have no patience for “childish” antics or behavior in YA books that may be appropriate or true to character. In this book, I didn‘t get annoyed. I liked the plot and puzzle (and the idea of book scavenging!). Good pace, interesting puzzle, good balance of action and character development. Didn‘t like the treatment of a bullying character - too one-dimensional and the main characters thought it fine to return the meanness.

I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was WAY better than Mr. Penubra‘s 24 hr bookstore. I used Book Crossing a lot when I was in high school and the author says it inspired the story. Two kids hunt across San Francicsco to find a treasure hidden by the Willy Wonka of books. A little danger, a lot of code/cyphers and a bit of fun SF and book history makes this book fun and entertaining. It also inspires me to return to book crossing! 4/5 stars

Emily moves to San Francisco just in time for the unveiling of the next anticipated book scavenger game from Mr. Griswald, only the reveal doesn‘t happen. Mr. Griswald is shot and in critical condition. No one knows what the game is meant to be.

But what if the book Emily finds is a part of the new game? And not just a piece of the game, but a clue to who shot Griswald?
