Today's #libraryhaul. The tagged book is our book club book for the month. I'm looking forward to rereading it and hoping it holds up to my memory of loving it!

Crazeedi Have you read the others in the series of moon sister? 3d

I created this #TBRBingo in August 2017, and this morning, I finally finished the last book! I'm greatly enjoying this sense of accomplishment, while simultaneously planning my next bingo card. 😃

LibLib How do you reward yourself when you complete the bingo squares? I hope it's more books 😋 4d
smilingshelves @LibLib I honestly haven't given a reward any thought, but I like the way you think! 😄 4d
BucklingBookshelves 🎉🎉🎉 I‘ve toyed with the idea of something like this — even maybe just a “high priority TBR” list but I‘m sooooo terrible at sticking to anything like that — regardless of how fun making the list is! 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3d
smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves Let's all take note that it took me almost two years to finish mine. 😆 For my next round, I'm thinking of doing categories, like the color of the book cover, or genre, or the year it was added to my Goodreads TBR. That way it can be based on mood reading, too. 3d

I heard that this was a telling of the Biblical story of Ruth and Boaz, which was interesting enough. But to open it to discover that it's a retelling set in 1860s England where "Ruth" is an Indian woman had me so excited. I love the way this retelling brings the Biblical story to life in whole new ways. And the writing is phenomenal. Plus, the cover! ? Highly recommended!

This graphic novel was awesome. The humor was spot-on and laugh-out-loud. The art was perfect for the style of story. I felt like it could have been a Monty Python sketch. I'll be reading this one again before it goes back to the library!

These are not the books I was planning to get at the library. (And yes, I plan what books I'm going to get. I miss the fun of browsing, but this is a lot faster when going with little kids.) Despite checking the catalog the night before to make sure the ones I wanted were available, they were both checked out when I got there in the morning! So I grabbed these instead. I'm sure I'll enjoy these just as much (still sightly disappointing, though).

smilingshelves @Andrew65 Thanks! I've been looking forward to starting this book for months. And because her books are so good, I really should be glad if it takes me weeks to finish, right? 😀 2mo
rretzler I actually liked The Liveship trilogy better than Farseer. I think by the end of Farseer, I was feeling a little frustrated with Fitz and his inability to take advice from those who were more experienced - it would have saved him so much pain, but of course, there wouldn‘t have been much of a story 😝 2mo
Andrew65 @smilingshelves Most definitely 😊 No doubt she‘ll tell a great story and it will be worth the time invested. Enjoy. 👍 2mo
smilingshelves @rretzler So tricky as a writer to find that balance! And a testament to Robin Hobb's skill that we're drawn so completely into her world as to be so frustrated by Fitz's choices! 😀 2mo

BucklingBookshelves As much of a crier as I usually am with books, audiobooks don‘t usually get me teary for some reason. This was still so heartbreaking how hard she is on herself 😞 Along with the passage where she calls herself a useless girl — “Then they wouldn‘t have to worry about another body, my useless body, to fill with water and food anymore” — that just kills me because SO MANY girls feel this way, in all different circumstances. 😞 2mo
smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves Yes, that passage was awful as well! I feel like so much of this could have been avoided if their father had just explained to them what was going on. They actually hid the newspapers so Nisha and Amil couldn't read them! If they had known what was going on and knew why it was so important to not talk to anyone, they might not have tried to talk to the neighbor girl. 2mo

I see some parallels with Merci Suarez Changes Gears. In my opinion, twelve is plenty old enough to know what's really going on!

@BucklingBookshelves #buddyread I haven't much time to read over the past couple days, but the next few should be better. How are you doing?

BucklingBookshelves Same here — it‘s been a crazy week here! I did decide to do the audio though and signed up for a Scribd trial, so I think that should help me get back into it. And YES that‘s a definite parallel to Merci. As a parent, it‘s soooo hard I think to walk that line between telling kids too much and too little and knowing what age they are ready to know different things. 2mo
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves I‘m sorry I got so behind! "How can somebody popular have so many people glad to see her crash?... Popular is even weirder. Turns out, it's not the same thing as having friends at all."

The beginning of your sixth grade year is a really good time to learn this, Merci! All of this middle school drama has had me squirming. Suffice it to say that middle school was not my favorite time of life! It's really accurately portrayed in this book, though! @BucklingBookshelves

BucklingBookshelves I totally agree! And I totally put a book dart on that quote — wise words from Merci right there. Popularity is such a double-edged sword and it‘s definitely not all it‘s cracked up to be. I was way too introverted to be popular, but I know it is so easy to look at the popular kids and think how great they must have everything. How easy life must must be for them, especially in middle school! But so much of that is just on the surface. 4mo

BucklingBookshelves I don‘t get it either! Definitely frustrating for her because she obviously can tell something is going on, just no one wants to talk about it. It‘s not like with a tiny kid that would just be oblivious. Not to mention how scared she must be because she is so close with Lolo and he‘s not acting like himself. Here's a connection I didn't expect! My daughter is going through something similar. Her eyes cross in, not out, and she just got glasses to fix it, not a patch. But I will definitely be reading this book with her someday! #buddyread
@BucklingBookshelves

BucklingBookshelves Oh my goodness! I can‘t believe how similar of a connection we have — my daughter hasn‘t been able to open one of her eyes all the way since she was born. It‘s improved to about halfway but that‘s still problematic for developing her vision, so we‘ve had all sorts of eye appointments (and a couple nervewracking days involving an X-ray to rule out a more serious, scary cause than just an underdeveloped eyelid muscle — thank God, that was clear!) (edited) 4mo
BucklingBookshelves ... They said she might need a patch on her good eye to try to strengthen the weak eye, but we are just waiting for our next appointments. And possibly surgery 😬 but we aren‘t quite sure about that yet. I‘m glad to hear your daughter could be helped with glasses! 4mo
smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves That is crazy that we have this in common! Your daughter is so young to be going through all of this! We just started treating this at 7 months old because she hadn't outgrown the eyes crossing, which should have been gone by 6 months. She's only had the glasses for a week. She's going to wear them for 3 months to see if they help enough. Otherwise, surgery is a possibility for us, too. We'll have to keep each other updated!🙏 4mo
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves I hope the glasses are all she needs and neither of our babies need surgery! 🙏 Mine has her next appointments mid-March so we should know more by then. Surgeon definitely wants to wait as long as we can even if she does need the surgery — the bigger and stronger they are the better, for sure! 4mo
