Just dropped my kids off for their first day of school (1st grade and preschool). The house is so strangely quiet! Now Mommy's feeling a little emotional, so I'm going to sit on the porch and read to distract myself. 😊

BucklingBookshelves I‘m a little late here, but I don‘t think those quiet days lasted too long! It is still a big, emotional transition though. ❤️ 1y

Anyone else have a copy of this book like this? Is it intentional? I actually haven't started reading yet, so maybe it will make sense with the story. Or maybe it's a publishing mistake. 🤷🏻‍♀️

BookKenz I don't have a copy of that book, but my copy of My Sister, The Serial Killer has the last 50 pages or so printed upside down. 2y
smilingshelves @Kenziejo That's even weirder than only part of it is upside down! 2y
BucklingBookshelves I missed this post! If it‘s a library book, my best guess is they accidentally attached the mylar cover upside down. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 2y
smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves Yup, that's exactly what happened! The librarian I told thought it was pretty funny. Of course, she wasn't the one who had done it in the first place. 😄 2y

I was in the mood for a middle grade binge, so I had a lot of fun at the library this week. Which one should I start with?

smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves Have you read any of these? Any thoughts? 😊 2y
BucklingBookshelves I haven‘t read any of them yet, but my mom & aunt borrowed Calpurnia Tate from my Newbery shelves and enjoyed it! The sequel as well. Pax is on my TBR, but I forget where I heard it recommended. 🤔 2y
BucklingBookshelves And I have the Ickabog on audio because it‘s narrated by Stephen Fry — an all time favorite narrator of mine! 2y

smilingshelves @LiteraryinLawrence Will do! It's been years since I've just grabbed what looks interesting off the shelves. It was so much fun! 2y
smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves I think Pax may have been a RAR rec originally? I know it's been on my TBR for a while. I'm really looking forward to Calpurnia Tate. I love the cover! And I don't know how I haven't read The Ickabog yet, but it sounds like I might need to read it on audio, too! 2y

BucklingBookshelves It can be hard to come to this point… at what point is it time to speak up? Most of the time, the adults in a kid‘s life are just doing their best to do the best for them… but there comes a time when the child does need to have a say in these kinds of decisions. It certainly happened for Reha here and it was a beautiful moment. 2y

This is a beautiful book, in both words and illustrations. I expected it to be a pretty text-heavy picture book, but it definitely wasn't. You could tell each word was chosen with care, and they're so powerful. The illustrations evoke such an atmosphere. What did you think, @BucklingBookshelves ? #buddyread

BucklingBookshelves I completely agree! So much emotion is evoked in the illustrations and they work seamlessly with the spare text. I can see why this won both a Newbery Honor and the Caldecott Medal. It‘s not an easy story, of course, but it amazes me too how memory can be brought to life on the page. The events the book are based on took place so many years ago! 2y
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves Are you up for continuing our Newbery buddy reads in April? Wondering which one I should try to get a hold of next. 🤔 2y
smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves Sure! I think anything else I'll have to request from a different library branch, so it doesn't matter to me. What do you want to do next? 2y

BucklingBookshelves I book-darted that quote! There is much truth there, even if our own journeys tend to be a bit more mundane. I love the stories-within-the story setup, (like the rabbit stories.) (edited) 2y

So, so obvious when she says it like that. But how often do we think about it like that? That's certainly not the prevalent view in our culture, although I know there are efforts being made to change that. A brain is not as easily understood or treated as a broken bone, but it is treatable!

God bless Nevaeh! What a good friend she was through this whole book. Amazingly tuned in to what Della needs. How do I raise my kids to be this compassionate of a friend?? #buddyread
@BucklingBookshelves

BucklingBookshelves Oh, I know that feeling! We are with them (almost) all the time, at least when they are little, so we see the sweet/kind moments, but we also see all the squabbles and bickering and wonder where we are going wrong (or i do, anyway!) Normal developmental stages in most cases and things they need to learn/practice/work at, but I agree, I want to foster the kindness & compassion and it can feel like a tall order in the everyday thick of parenting. (edited) 3y
smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves Right? I want to be a fly on the wall in my son's preschool classroom to see how he treats his classmates, because I know how he treats his sister! (Which, to be fair, is wonderful most of the time - but certainly not always!) Right now we're working with him on actually thinking about someone else's needs and wants other than his own. Developmentally appropriate, probably. But easy to despair as a parent! (edited) 3y
BucklingBookshelves I always say my kids are the best of friends AND they fight like cats and dogs. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Little sister wants to do EVERYTHING like her big brother so sometimes it can be a bit much to get along all the time. My mom says my brother & I didn‘t fight as much (almost identical age gap), but it was a different dynamic having the girl be the older one. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3y

I was a teacher for ten years. It breaks my heart to think about all the little cries for help that I surely missed. Hopefully, none of my students went through what Della is, but I know there must have been things like this that I missed. (Page 11) #buddyread
@BucklingBookshelves

BucklingBookshelves It‘s easy from the reader‘s perspective to fault the teacher for not noticing better... but I also feel like the best and most caring teachers WILL miss things because of the nature of a how a large class works. In this case, it seems the kids did want the teacher to notice. But in many cases kids actually don‘t want the teacher to notice bc they don‘t want to stand out or fear making things worse, which also happens at other times in this book. 3y
smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves Both are probably true, in different situations. I'll keep an eye out for that as I continue to read. Every kid should have someone who notices, whether they want them to or not. Which is one of the reasons why reading middle grade as an adult is so important! Eleven pages in, and this book is already doing its job! 3y

Got it, @BucklingBookshelves ! I've got to finish my book club book by Friday. 😬 Maybe we could start this weekend?
#buddyread

BucklingBookshelves Sounds like a plan! 3y
BucklingBookshelves I got started today! So I think this is going to be a bit like All Thirteen for me.... It‘s a very good book so far, but I can tell I‘m not going to want to linger in the middle of such a difficult story. I‘m already halfway through & have a bunch of quotes bookmarked to discuss, so I‘ll make sure to mark as spoilers and follow your lead for pacing out our discussion. 🙂 3y
smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves Wow! I can understand the not lingering thing. Read as fast as you like. I'll be starting tomorrow, apparently, because I just realized I left mine upstairs where the kids are sleeping, and I'm not sneaking back up! 😄 Post whenever, and I'll join in as I can! 3y
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves I hate when I do that! I told myself I‘d just get a couple chapters in because I knew it would be a tough one and didn‘t want the weekend to get away without me even starting... and then I was like, nope, can‘t stop now. 😬 I don‘t seem to have a middle speed with this year‘s books - I‘m either way ahead or way behind! 😆🤦🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ 3y

Here's the quote I marked, @BucklingBookshelves . Thought-provoking!

BucklingBookshelves Yes, very much so! I‘ve been thinking about this one and I don‘t think there‘s an easy answer. It feels sort of like a cop-out, but I think a balance of both really is important. Too much freedom can make people selfish, I think, and then it can impede on other people‘s right to be safe. It‘s the classic tension between the rights of the individual vs the rights of society at large. I‘ve already forgotten the context here, but it‘s very relevant! 3y
BucklingBookshelves There are sooo many current issues where the tension of safety and freedom are headline news. On a personal level, I think sometimes a person does need to take some risks rather than always stick to the safe route. But then there are so many other risks we are “free” to take that affect more than just the one person, but the community at large. So where is the line? It is hard to say! (edited) 3y
BucklingBookshelves Oh right! I just checked and the context was re: using fire. Which doesn‘t change my answer lol It would seem to me that a middle of the road approach is often best rather than all or nothing — no one can use fire ever bc an accident might happen & we must ensure safety 100% vs people are “free” to use fire at anytime with no rules or safety regulations — Neither extreme seems appealing to me! 3y

Pickpick

I really enjoyed the unique setting of this book. I often pay attention to the cover of a book, but they don't usually influence me the way the cover of this one did. I could imagine the city so easily. I liked the message the book conveyed, and Pong and Somkit's relationship was fun and sweet. There were some pacing issues that means this book was not a home run for me, but I enjoyed it overall.

smilingshelves How are you doing, @BucklingBookshelves ? I didn't find much to post on as I read, although I have one quote to discuss once you've finished. The pages just zipped by, and I finished before I knew it! #buddyread 3y
BucklingBookshelves I have some catching up to do! I got stuck in the beginning chapters for some reason, but it‘s picking up for me now. I think maybe I felt disoriented a bit because so much is realistic, but then there are fantasy elements. I haven‘t book-darted anything yet. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Hopefully over the weekend I‘ll finish up! 3y
BucklingBookshelves P.S. looks like we flip-flopped since I zipped through our last one! Especially interesting being two books from the same author 🤔 3y

Pickpick

Wow. I am so grateful to the Newbery committee for picking this as an Honor book this year, because I would never have picked it up otherwise. This is one of those stories where truth is more incredible than fiction. Everyone needs to know about this rescue! Read this book!

(I finally finished, @BucklingBookshelves !) #buddyread

Prairiegirl_reading I have very bad claustrophobia. There is no way I could read this!! Sounds interesting though!! 3y
BucklingBookshelves I agree with all of this! What an amazing true story. And I‘d NEVER have picked it up if not a Newbery. I think middle grade non/fiction is a genre I haven‘t given a fair chance. SO curious to see an example of the author‘s fiction since her A Wish in the Dark was also honored this year. 2 Newberys in one year for the same author is definitely a rarity! I‘ll have to look up if it‘s ever happened before. 🤔 3y
BucklingBookshelves P.S. I didn‘t find not too many quotable passages to really discuss along the way, but still felt this was VERY well written. 3y

BOX: Henry Brown Mails Himself to Freedom | Carole Boston Weatherford
post image

What a powerful book this was, and what an incredible true story! How hard that must have been to always feel that your family could be torn away from you at any moment. What did you think, @BucklingBookshelves ? #buddyread

BucklingBookshelves Agree! Weatherford‘s writing is always excellent and it was great to see this true story written in poetry receive an Honor this year. Have you read the Caldecott picture book about Henry Brown? It‘s been awhile, but it was also very good with excellent artwork by Kadir Nelson. I want to reread it now to compare side-by-side. It‘s always interesting, I think, to see how different authors tell the same story in such a short format of a book. 3y
BucklingBookshelves The tearing apart of families is just one of the myriad injustices of slavery, but one that cuts deep. So heartbreaking that they were never reunited, but that was the horrific reality for so many. I‘ll post one of the poems that really struck me that also speaks to this. 3y
smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves I thought I had run across this story before! I bet I was thinking of Henry's Freedom Box. I'm glad Henry's story is still known in the world through these books. It's an important one! 3y

smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves It's certainly going better than I expected! Helps that we don't go anywhere anymore, so I have more chances to sneak a few pages in during the day. 😄 4y

It's Friday, which means I rewarded myself for getting through the week by reading during the kids' naptime. Outside, even, because it was a gorgeous day!

SaraFair Agree. How could someone ever have happiness with those societal norms and so much death? 4y
smilingshelves @SaraFair Right? The societal norms alone are heartbreaking, let alone everything that results from living by them. 4y

#cleartheshelf Day 7 - 104 pages read

The margins in this book seem strangely narrow to me and the lines are close together, like they were trying to cram as many words as they could on a page. It would have been fine by me to have more pages so that everything could be easier to read! 🤷‍♀️
