The Diviners
The Diviners | Libba Bray
Do you believe there are ghosts and demons and Diviners among us? Evie O'Neill has been exiled from her boring old hometown and shipped off to the bustling streets of New York City--and she is pos-i-tute-ly ecstatic. It's 1926, and New York is filled with speakeasies, Ziegfield girls, and rakish pickpockets. The only catch is that she has to live with her Uncle Will and his unhealthy obsession with the occult.Evie worries he'll discover her darkest secret: a supernatural power that has only brought her trouble so far. But when the police find a murdered girl branded with a cryptic symbol and Will is called to the scene, Evie realizes her gift could help catch a serial killer. As Evie jumps headlong into a dance with a murderer, other stories unfold in the city that never sleeps. A young man named Memphis is caught between two worlds. A chorus girl named Theta is running from her past. A student named Jericho hides a shocking secret. And unknown to all, something dark and evil has awakened....Printz Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author Libba Bray opens a brand-new historical series with The Diviners, where the glittering surface of the Roaring Twenties hides a mystical horror creeping across the country.

I picked up this YA-Fantasy-Paranormal read a few years ago while I randomly browsed a book store. I loved the 1920s setting and even though I am not fond of the main character - I think that might be partly while I enjoyed it. There was a Stovepipe Hat that makes quite a few appearances. I have to admit - I did not enjoy the second book in this series.

It‘s #toohot and anything other than sitting quietly indoors reading causes melting. So reading and listening to classic rock. Had Cheap Thrills by Big Brother and the Holding Company on, and now it‘s the White Album by The Beatles.

Cheshirecat913 I really liked this book when I read it a while ago. I got the second book and mean to do a reread sometime in the future. 2w

I am afraid to say that I didn‘t like The Diviners as much as I wanted to. It was such a hyped book and it had everything I loved, so in theory I should have loved it. My main problem was Evie. I really could not connect with her. She was a bit on the bratty and selfish side. While she saw some character growth it was not enough for me to like her. I understand it‘s the start of the series but I probably won‘t continue on.
⭐️⭐️

alisonrose I enjoyed this mostly but definitely agree that Evie was not a fave. I think that‘s what has kept me from picking up the second book, although I probably will at some point. Maybe she‘ll have matured a bit in that one 😬 1mo
Aaronlisa I liked this book but the second one is killing me because of Evie. I get stuck every time the story focuses on her. 1mo

After a couple of days of recovering from surgery I am finally back to reading. I thought I‘d be able to read during recovery but I could hardly stay awake. Tonight, I finally reached page 100 of the tagged book before my reading partner passed out. It‘s slow to start but very character driven. I think it is finally time to call lights out. Five stars! The book was excellent. I couldn‘t put it down so it took me two days. I love the time period and the characters. It‘s so interesting. It leans to the occult side but I though it was excellent. I‘m so excited to continue the series.

I really enjoyed this. Interesting characters and plot. Definitely going to keep going with the series. It does suffer a bit with some shallow storytelling and a little of instalove, but I feel like as the series goes on, we will see these this fleshed out a bit more.

Also, why are there like 264 different covers for this book?

Alright, so normally I don‘t read anything that deals with the occult or spirits or anything even remotely close to that but I COULD NOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN! I‘m so serious. I read and listened, fascinated and terrified for the last 2 -3 days. I also have book 2 ready to go. (Although I might need to let me nerves relax a bit before I start lol) Wow, what a ride.

I finished The Diviners in audiobook this morning. Overall, I think the second half made up for a lot of the content that dragged in the first half. The book offers no illusions that it‘s a one-shot, because so many character arcs just kind of hit pause at the end of the book, which spends most of its pages setting up the rest of the series. The reader January LaVoy does an excellent job with a large cast and even sings some lines in character.

I‘m halfway through the audiobook of The Diviners. My thoughts, thus far:
• a piano needs to fall on Sam
• Evie needs to get sent back home
• Theta & Memphis would make much better leads in this story
• not finding things all that scary, but the audiobook doesn‘t help when the reader‘s attempt at the booming crazy man voice is more laughable than frightening (overall, she‘s doing a great job with a large cast)

#audiobook #libbabray #thediviners

LibrarianRyan I never thought this was really scary. I enjoyed it but thought it could be shorter. But at the same time, it does a great job setting up the characters for future books. 3mo
brittanythebookdragon I‘m not a huge Evie fan either even after finishing the book! She‘s young and Bray makes her act like a child. I think the thing I liked about this so much was the murderer perspective. Some of those parts gave me the creeps. It wasn‘t scary but at times for me it was quite...visceral I think would be a good word for it. 3mo
BillBlume @brittanythebookdragon I have to confess that the book finally took a positive turn, for me, with Evie. Almost right after this post, she finally got invested in the murders and opened up to “Unc” about her powers. Was nice to see her taking action in the central plot. I still hate Sam, though. It‘s the fishes for him. 3mo

Perhaps the biggest revelation for me was getting to hear from Libba Bray. I‘m embarrassed to admit she wasn‘t even on my radar, and now I‘m wondering how I‘ve been so oblivious. She closed out the event with a keynote that was brilliant, funny, and inspiring. I‘d randomly attended two of the panels with her, and she cracked me up the entire time. She is officially going on my TBR list. #NoVaTeenBF #NTBF19

Damn it. I enjoyed this. Now I don't think it's the cats pyjamas the way some do but I like the diverse cast, the mystery was really good and I enjoyed the "is it an actual murderer or a paranormal" debate this book made me had for the majority of it. The mc Evie is flawed but I really liked her. I did cringe a lot at the dialogue because it is so cheesy flapper era but that's a personal taste.

Curious to see what the sequels will focus on

Cherzy77 The following books are entertaining as well! 5mo

Mystical, mystery, death. Pretty good. Set in NY in the 1940‘s where flappers and prohibition were “the thing”.

Charming and exciting, yet dark, I greatly enjoyed this book although I didn‘t quite love it. The cast of characters was varied and delightful and the narrative zipped along. Much of the dialogue sparkled, but some of the attempts at 1920s slang came across as corny to me. While I often enjoy the 1920s as a setting, I found that this book was a little too on-the-nose in its characterization of the era. But overall, a zippy, entertaining read!

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian I found my enjoyment of this series only increased with every book. Are you planning to read the next one? 6mo
businessmermaid @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian yes definitely! I really want to see what happens with the characters, especially the ones who didn‘t get as much screen time in this book. I have a daunting TBR though, so it‘s anyone‘s guess when I‘ll obtain and read the next one. 6mo

Long but well worth the read. Shout out to the most talented audio book reader ( January LaVoy) I've ever heard for flawlessly pulling off different voices for an enormous cast of characters - some even had accents! The storyline is absolutely immersive with an addictive mix of supernatural and mystery and a hint of romance. I love all the old timey jargon. I'm on the waitlist for the next one in the series and I can't wait!

I am so happy that I could finish this before the end of the year! I loved this huge book. The setting was so atmospheric and the supernatural elements were done just right. It was a little heavy handed on the slang at times which I'm not entirely sure was how it was done in the 20s but I truly enjoyed it. It doesn't read like a YA novel, either, which was nice for me.

Now this was just what I needed! SOOOOOO GOOOOD! I mean flappers, supernatural serial killers, independent women, hints at secret government groups? How could it go wrong? This suspense filled murder mystery, with it's atmospheric 1920s backdrop, will have you craving more.Bray fantastically weaves seemingly separate stories, told in alternating voices, that divulge new revelations at a tormenting pace.Enhancing the ominous atmosphere of the setting, Bray jumping from moments of delight to sinister nearly instantly. This ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ first installment would be the perfect choice for a spooky read this fall.
