Man, this started out really great. I loved Freddy, Alex, & Les. Dal was a totally swoony hero. But about halfway, the author threw in 2 side romances that were SO eye-rolly & unnecessary. And, the narrator favored the confederacy in a way that started to make me uncomfortable. It‘s a historical set in Texas so I‘m not expecting a lot of nuance — but there are other authors who have grappled much better with the legacy of the civil war. ★★★☆☆.

This was a really fun follow up! Again, Taj was a dynamic, believable teen narrator. I enjoyed his blossoming relationship with Aliya a lot. The magical elements of the world went over my head a bit, and the plot felt a little messy in the middle — it felt like 2 plots smushed into one book. Still, the characters and writing made this book really enjoyable! A really fun fantasy. ★★★☆☆.

Still a really fun read! Taj is a great narrator whose voice struck the perfect chord of I‘m-jaded-but-I-still-care. His narration and his interactions with others sucked you quickly into his world, which was rich & satisfying. The plot was a little messy, especially at the end, but the characters & the setting, as well as the exciting magic / philosophy sprinkled in throughout, made up for it! Ready to see where this goes next. ★★★½.

Joan of Arc meets Grishaverse in this debut! Premise, world-building, & characters of this book were fun. The conflict melds religion & politics, which I enjoyed, though the plot meandered. But, I‘m over romances where the girl whose “skin crawls” when someone touches her is suddenly craving it later. Friends, let‘s not confuse skin-crawling with desire. Still, it looks like things might be different in the next book. We‘ll see! ★★★☆☆. #yalitsy

The romance is SO FRICKIN‘ ADORABLE!!! I love everything about Bea & Kesgrave — sweet, sexy, witty AF. But there was way less interaction between them, as Bea spent 3/4ths of it Sorting Herself Out by trying to solve a mystery on her own. Also, if you want a hardboiled whodunnit, look elsewhere — I guessed the murderer about 40% in. Still, the dialogue continues to be infinitely charming & I found myself more invested in Bea than ever! ★★★☆☆

The characters were still as charming as ever. Jamie is an excellent narrator & Charlotte is as messy & hard & funny & smart as ever. Really liked getting to see August Moriarty, too. The plot ran away from me though, especially towards the end — I felt like two plots were squeezed into one book, & it was hard to tell which one to pay attention to. Still, the characters have me hooked so I look forward to the next one! ★★★☆☆.

BillBlume I had a similar reaction to this one. Sad to say I haven‘t gone onto the third book. 5mo

This was...fine? It all felt Very Typical. Every character is a cardboard cutout of the Quintessential Middle Grade Novel. Plucky Young Girl Who Is Constantly Underestimated, Proper Grown Ups Who Are Either Absentminded Or Very Interested In Being Proper, etc. It was nice, but I wasn‘t riveted. I drifted in out of the story without feeling any attachment at all. Cute, mildly interesting, but not particularly new. 4th for #24in48. ★★★☆☆.

A charming retelling! The characters were very convincing, in all their brilliant, teenage glory. Jamie, especially, was one precious muffin...& y‘all know how I feel about precious muffins. Their romance was a bit rushed, but believable. The mystery was a touch too obvious. So, not a brilliant whodunnit, but a fun story that does well in recreating the atmosphere of the originals while adding a dash of its own flavor! ★★★½. 3rd for #24in48

#24in48 Hour 18: #WeNeedDiverseBooks | I read this fantastic collection of poems when it was first released last August, & I often find myself returning to these poems, which explore the poet‘s relationship to her family, her sexuality, & her histories, both personal & global. It‘s the first time I‘ve felt like I saw parts of my own experience in poetry. I felt it changed the landscape of what is possible for me to write about in my own work ♥️

Every character is brought to life as Winslet dons different pitches & accents, and moves you through the story as only a consummate actress could. That was lovely. 1st, there was the amazing characterization — Jack & August just leapt off the page with each sentence. 2nd, there was the absolutely stellar prose, which often had me melting. The plot felt a bit winding & unresolved, but the gorgeousness of the telling more than made up for it! An amazing story about friendship & love, and how far you can (or should be) willing to go for the one you can‘t live without. ★★★★☆. First for #24in48!

Gosh, apart from the EXCELLENT writing, the design of this book is incredible — as the book opens with a fire, each page is made to look as if it‘s getting increasingly charred, before becoming completely black for the last section. It‘s creating this eerie mood that I love! 😍 #24in48

NOPE. First, it‘s ploddingly dull. The main MC is given nearly everything she needs in order to investigate with little fuss. At one point, apropos of nothing, the 2 MCs have a thuddingly polite conversation about how they both like to garden, a lot. Now, I like gardening just fine, but HELLO WE‘RE INVESTIGATING A MURDER RIGHT NOW? & that‘s all before we get to some issues with depictions of race that I personally couldn‘t ignore. Thank you, next

That was an immensely satisfying series, with two leads that were both flawed & full of heart, & a school of side characters who stole your heart just as much as the MCs did. I also loved getting to know the twists & turns of turn-of-the-20th-century San Francisco — the historical aspects were just as engaging as the murdery, suspenseful plot. A great read if you‘re in the mood for great characters, excellent world-building, & dark plots. ★★★★☆.

*TW for sex trafficking & abuse

A dark, gritty mystery. The author didn‘t shy away from the ugliness that could be found in America for non-white, non-male people at the turn of the 20th century. She also did her due diligence in terms of how a multitude of POC were treated, & made sure that her MCs engaged with those issues thoughtfully. A rare thing, tbh. I also loved AJ & Isobel‘s blossoming relationship. A gritty, well-written story. ★★★★☆

What a ride! I loved getting to see things from Bel‘s point of view. The plot was intriguing & twisty & full of characters that pulled you in from that very first message in the sand. I also loved seeing Riot being second-in-command with grace & sense — the best kind of hero when a woman is trying to get things done, tbh. This is why their romance works for me, even if it does feel sudden at times. A twisty mystery with great characters. ★★★★☆.

Great writing, slow plot. Atticus Riot & Isobel Kingston were bold & fun, & engaged me from start to finish. Lovely phrasing & some excellent descriptions brought turn-of-the-century San Francisco to life vividly. The mystery itself plodded slowly; I found my attention slipping as to who did what & when — so that when we got to the end, I was not totally sure as to how all the pieces fit. Still, I‘m interested to see where it goes next! ★★★☆☆.

Oh, what a delightful romp this series has been! Beatrice‘s third adventure is as lively as the others, with the added sweetness of her deepening romance with the Duke of Kesgrave, even as they continue to match wits. Their interactions are so adorable. The mystery, too, was an intriguing one, though once again it had a rather sudden end. Overall, this was a charming, hilarious regency mystery/romance series. I hope there will be more! ★★★★☆
