Before I graduated, I got to see three concerts that were pretty formative experiences:
🎫Tina Turner's 1987 Break Every Rule World Tour in France
🎫The Cure's 1989 The Prayer Tour in Montreal.
🎫The Grapes of Wrath 1991Canadian tour (remember them Canucks? 😄) at a local bar (used a fake ID to get in.)
They shaped my love of live music and made me want to live somewhere with lots of concerts. Miss them! 😢
#back2school @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB

TheKidUpstairs Tina Turner puts on a 🔥🔥🔥 live show. I saw her a few years ago and she absolutely slayed for two and a half hours straight. Legend. 4y
MsMelissa Holy cow The Grapes of Wrath! Now that is a blast from the past 🎸 🎶 4y
merelybookish @TheKidUpstairs Legend indeed! I was 14 when I saw her and didn't know how lucky I was! 4y
See All 26 Comments
merelybookish @Book_Fiend_Melissa They were MuchMusic staples for a year. I probably wouldn't remember them except sneaking into see them was such a big deal! 4y
wanderinglynn The Cure! 🖤🖤🖤 4y
sarahbarnes Amazing! Live music is one of the things I miss most right now! 4y
PurpleyPumpkin Ahh, I just went down a rabbit hole! Love all of these artists. I went on the hunt for this Grapes of Wrath album and found it! I have it on cassette. Wow, memories.🎼🥁🎸 4y
BarbaraBB I miss live music too. And I loved The Cure too, i always tried to dance like Robert Smith 😉 (edited) 4y
merelybookish @wanderinglynn The Cure and the Smiths for moody days! 4y
merelybookish @sarahbarnes I know! 😞 I was excited about our plans to see shows at small venues. 4y
merelybookish @PurpleyPumpkin Haha! I really loved them. I grew up in Saint John, NB so their song Backward Town really spoke to me. 4y
merelybookish @BarbaraBB Live music is one of the losses of COVID life I really feel. 😕 4y
PurpleyPumpkin I just watched on YouTube. Hadn't heard Backward Town before. I quite enjoyed it! 4y
Cinfhen So true!! I miss the live music experiences/ I saw so many concerts during my HS/ college days. Highlight was probably Michael Jackson‘s Bad tour 1987 4y
batsy Tina Turner! Oh man, how I envy you. I managed to catch The Cure when they came to Singapore in 2007 as a birthday present to myself and it remains my best present to myself 😍 4y
Cathythoughts The Cure 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 4y
merelybookish @Cinfhen Wow! MJ in his heyday! 4y
merelybookish @batsy I once indulged in a pricey ticket to see Leonard Cohen and it was the right decision! 4y
TrishB Missing live music so much 🎶 we paid a very lot of money to see Kate Bush‘s tour. Worth every penny. Seen The Cure and they are worth every penny too! @batsy (edited) 4y
Cinfhen Also seeing Bruce in 1985 (Born in the USA) was HUGE!!! Wham, Cyndi Lauper and KC & The Sunshine Band opened for him. Such GREAT memories 4y
merelybookish @TrishB Wow, I bet Kate Bush puts on a show! 4y
merelybookish @Cinfhen This is why I dreamed of living in a big city as a kid!! 4y
TrishB She was amazing ♥️♥️ 4y
LeahBergen The Grapes of Wrath?? Yes!! 😆😆 4y
merelybookish @LeahBergen Loved them and Spirit of the West, Blue Rodeo & Cowboy Junkies! 4y

Thanks for all of your wonderful suggestions ??

Cinfhen My apologies if I left out any names....I meant to include you @Cathythoughts 😘 4y
Cathythoughts Thanks, I‘d love to read Prep ! That would be my first choice. Then Bunny 4y
Cathythoughts 👍🏻😘😘 4y
See All 23 Comments
Marni How to decide?! Prep or The Gifted School, both look sooooo good! I‘ll go with Prep because Curtis Sittenfeld write one of my favorite books 4y
Librarybelle I posted also on @BarbaraBB ‘s too - any choice is fine by me, but if I had to choose, either The Gifted School or Prep. 4y
Cinfhen Those are the two I‘m leaning towards as well @Librarybelle I‘m a little worried about Bunny....but I‘ll happily read whatever gets the most votes @Cathythoughts @Marni I loved American Wife but was not a fan of 4y
Marni @Cinfhen Eligible is one of my all time favorites. I‘ve read or listened to it at least 4 times in the last 3 years! You should check it out! 4y
Cinfhen I forgot about Eligible @Marni 🙈It IS GREAT!!!! So fun!!!! 4y
Kimberlone I vote for 4y
DebinHawaii I voted over at @BarbaraBB 🤗 Prep is my first choice, then Bunny. 4y
Hooked_on_books Thanks for the tag. The only one here I‘m interested in is Bunny. I‘ve read Prep and just have too many books to be rereading. It‘s good, though. 4y
CarolynM I'm honestly happy with any of them. I'm about to read Bunny for #bookspinbonanza 4y
JaclynW So many great choices! 4y
Cinfhen I‘ll be looking for your review @CarolynM it seems like BUNNY is a popular choice but I‘ve heard it‘s STRANGE!!! guess we‘ll have to wait and see @Hooked_on_books @JaclynW @DebinHawaii @Kimberlone 🐰 4y
DebinHawaii @Cinfhen Sometimes I really like strange! 🤪 4y
Hooked_on_books Strange gives us more to talk about 😬 4y
alisiakae Playing catch up, and this looks fun! Can I still sign up? 😃 4y
Cinfhen Definitely @4thhouseontheleft just go to @BarbaraBB to place your vote 😘 4y
Reviewsbylola I just started reading Matilda to my kids after great success with Charlie & the Choc Factory and its sequel. So far they hate Matilda and are begging me to bail. 🤦🏼‍♀️😂 4y
Cinfhen I‘m surprised the girls aren‘t liking Matilda @Reviewsbylola I thought they would/ I recently read this book for a challenge (#pop20 - #madeuplanguage) and I thought it would make a wonderful read for kids 👉🏽 4y
Reviewsbylola Florence was very into it last night. Genevieve keeps getting scared by the pranks Matilda plays on her dad and runs out of the room. 🙈 4y
Cinfhen Your girls are so cute @Reviewsbylola 💕💕 4y
Reviewsbylola I‘m so glad they‘re into chapter books now. It‘s been fun reading them some of my favorites!! 4y

bookandbedandtea A school themed book sounds fun! I agree with @DebinHawaii that one set in a boarding school would be great. Thanks @Cinfhen and @BarbaraBB for hosting these parties! 4y
Hooked_on_books I haven‘t read it yet but want to. How about 4y
Cuilin @cinfhen @barbaraBB thanks for organizing the #buddyread. That was fun. looking forward to #backtoschool. 4y
merelybookish Fun! The Gifted School by Ben Lerner, Oligarchy by Scarlett Thomas, the divisive Trust Exercise by Susan Choi, or my beloved 4y
Librarybelle Definitely count me in - still reading through Tell The Wolves I‘m Home so I can join the discussion. It truly packs a punch! 4y
BookwormAHN @vivastory I also think Bunny or If We Were Villains would be good. 4y
squirrelbrain What @merelybookish said - I loved this one! 4y
vivastory @BookwormAHN Great minds! 4y
squirrelbrain Thanks for hosting this #buddyread @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB - it‘s the first ‘Litsy-wide‘ one I‘ve participated in (done mini ones before) and I loved it! I‘ll have a think for more school-based books.... 4y
squirrelbrain Another option - lots of discussion points... 4y
KarenUK Love this idea! A book I haven‘t read but want to..... (edited) 4y
KarenUK Also this list has some good ideas.... https://lithub.com/the-20-best-campus-novels-ranked/ 4y
Lizpixie I really loved this campus novel 4y
TrishB Good one 👍🏻 no ideas as yet though! 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I don‘t know why this popped into my head for this question... not really school but a library.... The Library at Mount Char. I‘ll see what else I can think of... 4y
CarolynM I'm in! Great suggestion @bookandcat The fist book, Changing Places, is particularly good. 4y
peaKnit I‘ve not read it but enjoyed the movie ages ago, seems it would garner a lot of discussion. (edited) 4y
bookandbedandtea Just in case I'm not the only person who hasn't read this yet, I nominate 4y
JaclynW @Librarybelle I'm still reading Tell the Wolves I'm Home also. I ended up planting my garden today before my plants died instead of reading. I will catch up on the discussion soon! The book definitely packs a punch! @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB Thanks for organizing these! I love them! 4y
JaclynW I've always wanted to read this one 4y
JaclynW This one looks interesting 4y
JaclynW Or maybe 4y
Cinfhen I‘m enjoying all of these fabulous suggestions!! @BarbaraBB and I will collect them and then narrow them down to 5 which we will put up for a vote. Thanks for your enthusiasm!!!! Cinfhen See above 👆🏽🙏🏼 @DebinHawaii @Hooked_on_books @jenniferw88 ( why am I NOT surprised, Jenny 👓) 4y
jenniferw88 @squirrelbrain @Cinfhen - sorry, but please NOT Never Let Me Go - I've read it & it hits a bit close to home (transplant!) X 4y
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen 😂 I did say it was obvious! 4y
jenniferw88 @Hooked_on_books @Cinfhen - just warning you that this is probably a #chunkster (559 pages)! 4y
jenniferw88 How about 4y
Megabooks I would definitely reread 4y
jenniferw88 @squirrelbrain it's ok - you weren't to know! X 4y
Cinfhen 👍🏽 @jenniferw88 @Megabooks both @BarbaraBB and myself are interested in reading this one 👉🏽 (edited) 4y
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen it's on my 'wishlist' too to get! 4y
Billypar I'll vote for this @vivastory nomination - the Litsy description had me at "The Vegetarian meets Heathers" 4y
Billypar Also... did we break the Tell the Wolves I'm Home page? It's the only Litsy page that won't load for me this morning 😁 4y
Cinfhen Hahaha!! That‘s too funny @Billypar and I too really want to read this book but I hear it‘s STRANGE 4y
batsy So many good suggestions here! There are a couple of newish ones that are on my tbr 4y
batsy There's also this, which was very enjoyable, but it's 600+ pages I think 😁 #pagecountphobia 4y
batsy Ooh and this! I loved it 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @peaknit I haven‘t read that one yet either, and I should. 4y
Cuilin @batsy Skippy dies is good. 4y
peaKnit Skippy dies, I think I even own that book. 🤗 4y
Cinfhen Skippy Dies is a good one @batsy @Cuilin @peaknit and would make for a good discussion 4y
erzascarletbookgasm I love books set in schools. So many great suggestions, can‘t wait for the voting! 4y

I‘ve been MIA for a while. I‘ll try to post more, but this return to traditional classroom teaching after 16 years is exhausting! The first week with students went really well and I‘m impressed by many of my 8th graders. I love this age—old enough to make some keen observations, young enough to want to please their teachers.

Eggs I love this age too💗👏🏻 5y
BookishMarginalia Welcome back to the classroom! Yours looks very nicely set up too 💪🏻 5y
Crazeedi That's awesome that you've returned to teaching! 👏🎉 5y
VanChocStrawberry Thanks!
@bookishmarginalia I have the kids in rows right now, so I can look at and memorize their faces. I hope to make groups with less traditional arrangements soon. We also get up and move, circle up and try to do things other than sit. The periods are 80 minutes, so they need to stretch and move some! :)
5y
MelissaSue81 Look at your lovely classroom library!
Glad the first week went well!
