My hold came in so I‘m just gonna jump right in ☺️Sorry friends, I know we had talked about a possible #BunnyRead but I can‘t wait. #FeveredFairyTale

AlaMich I literally just read a NYT review and it sounded so good! 6mo
Librarybelle No worries! I saw a rumor that it will be either a #BOTM or an #Aardvark choice for October, so I‘m kind of waiting to see if that is true. But, I plan to read it asap! And, I started listening to How Can I Help You - this is so twisted! It‘s like a train wreck in a library with a suspicious staff member. Good recommendation! 6mo
CBee I tried reading Bunny. I really did….. but I got to a certain part and just, NOPE 🫢🫢🫢 6mo

batsy No problem at all! Enjoy and look forward to your thoughts! 6mo
Ruthiella No problem. I hope it is awesome! 6mo
Kimberlone Hoping I can get this soon from the library! 6mo
Cinfhen @Librarybelle yay!!! Im so glad you took my recommendation 😎Keep me posted ♥️and I hope the Awad is featured on BOTM or Aardvark for October 🪞 (edited) 6mo
Cinfhen Bunny was definitely wild @CBee so far this one seems saner but im only 30 minutes in 😂😂 it sounds great though! It seems to be a take on Snow White @AlaMich @Kimberlone @batsy @Ruthiella 6mo
BarbaraBB Very curious! I didn‘t like Bunny much, preferred 6mo

Look who‘s back?!? Our favorite 🐰
This one actually sounds great!
Should we try for another “BunnyRead” later this year???

Cinfhen I‘m thinking of Jenny, since you loved Bunny! @jenniferw88 8mo
Ruthiella I still need to read her debut, but am totally excited about this new book. Thanks for the heads-up! 😃 8mo
Cinfhen Right @Ruthiella it sounds really good!!! And Bunny is BONKERS! And I really liked this one too 8mo

Kimberlone Yes this one looks so good! Bunny was so fun to discuss 8mo
Librarybelle I‘d totally be down for another “BunnyRead” ! I‘m looking forward to this one. I liked both of her books…which is weird because they are so bonkers (good word choice!) 8mo
jenniferw88 Mmm... it says horror (which isn't my genre) but I have been surprising myself this year - two 5 ⭐ dystopian reads and a 5 ⭐ romance book, so I'll give it a go! Who knows, I might be a huge Stephen King fan but not know it yet @TrishB ?!! 😂😂😂 8mo
BarbaraBB Did I like Bunny? I can‘t remember anymore. But I‘m in of course! 8mo
Cinfhen Bunny was sooooo out there, I don‘t think we appreciated how “smart” it was until after the fact @BarbaraBB but at the time we were both STRUGGLING!!!! I do remember @Librarybelle @jenniferw88 and I think @batsy all enjoyed Bunny! And yesss, the discussion was excellent @Kimberlone - maybe we can read around Halloween time (end of October) 🧡🧡🧡 8mo
TrishB @jenniferw88 I can start you off on the none horror King first 😁 8mo
batsy Oh, nice! I loved Bunny and have been meaning to read her others. I'd totally be up for another #bunnyread lol 8mo
Megabooks I‘m second in line at the library! 7mo

Well, I‘ve made it to Part Two. I had no idea what to expect, but I‘m glad to report that it‘s intense, hilarious, compulsively readable, and so seriously f*cked up. So.

LeahBergen It is, isn‘t it? 😂 4y

It‘s too bad that I couldn‘t get a copy until after #bunnyread finished!! I sympathized with Samantha and was captivated by the cast of characters, like Ava and her Drink Me flask and the Bunnies with their cupcakes and cardigans!

Not book-related at all so please excuse me while I indulge @Cinfhen in a picture of our local Benetton!

During the #back2school #bunnyread Cindy reminisced about shopping at Benetton, back in the day.

You asked for a pic, Cindy, and I never renege on a promise! 🤣Our town is the only place I‘ve seen one for years, and I haven‘t been in it for years either!

MsMelissa Were the Benetton green and white (or blue and white) rugby shirt a thing for you growing up. When I was around 12 years old they were the must have article of clothing for tweens/teens. 4y
Caroline2 How funny is this!! 😆 4y

Ruthiella WOW! I haven‘t seen a store since 1992 or so. I didn‘t realize they were still around. 4y
TheEllieMo Wow, that‘s a blast from the past! 4y
charl08 I didn't know these were still here either? Wow. 4y
Lcsmcat I didn‘t know they were still in business! 4y

Cinfhen Ahhhhh, you‘re the BEST BUNNY EVER , thanks SO MUCH, Helen😘😘😘 yesssssssss @Book_Fiend_Melissa I definitely have a picture of me somewhere wearing the blue & white and my boyfriend then/hubby now is wearing the green & white 😂😂😂Wow!!!! So funny. I MUST find that photo ❤️❤️❤️ 4y
Cinfhen BTW: I don‘t think I‘d want to purchase anything in that window...it‘s indistinguishable from Gap, Old Navy, H&M etc, etc ☹️ 4y
squirrelbrain It‘s all a bit ‘1990s‘ isn‘t it @cinfhen?! 🤣🤣 That‘ll be why there only seems to be this one shop left in the whole world! 4y

I appreciated the many thoughtful reviews & comments for the #bunnyread. I found this riveting & fun. A mash-up of genres that doesn't obey the rules: dark humour, satire, camp, horror, fabulism, fantasy. As a meditation on writing, I like that the book enacted the *wild* process of what it means to imagine: its allure & its danger. I also thought Awad was subtly clever about the classism, elitism, & insularity of the academic MFA environment. ⬇️

batsy The many criticisms & articles about the lack of diversity in publishing in N. America & Europe (& in different ways around the world) have also tried to interrogate if MFA programmes contribute to it. Awad's novel, being fiction, can really take risks with how it tries to show us just how limiting & damaging this environment can be if you're an "outsider" for any number of reasons. It was also surprisingly poignant in ways I didn't expect. 4y
batsy Thank you @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB for hosting a great discussion and the fun prompts leading up to it 🧡 4y
Tanisha_A Very insightful review! I ended up liking this one a whole lot 4y

Cinfhen Wonderful review. Insightful and thought provoking. I really enjoyed reading all of your responses and of course, your school days memories. 4y
Cathythoughts Great review Suba 👍🏻❤️ 4y
Billypar Great review! Very true that its critique of MFA is one that fiction is uniquely suited for. It was revealing to see those issues laid bare, and she didn't have to sacrifice the enjoyable fantasy aspects running throughout 4y
batsy @Tanisha_A @Cinfhen @Cathythoughts Thank you 💜 This book was just ripe for a lively discussion! 4y
batsy @Billypar Thank you! Yes, I love that she could critique those issues but still play around with fantasy, horror, fabulism. 4y
RohitSawant Fantastic review! Just read Scott's post about it and am doubly intrigued by the book having read yours. All of those things sound like a terrific combo. 4y
batsy @rohit-sawant Thanks, Rohit! I have a feeling this might be to your taste. Or maybe I'm selfishly saying that because I'd love for you to read it and share your thoughts 😁 There's so much here about writing and creation and the cross-genre elements might appeal to you. 4y
vivastory Great review. It has been interesting to see how this one has had cross-genre appeal. 4y
batsy @vivastory Thanks! 4y
readordierachel Fabulous review. I enjoyed this one too 👍🏼 4y
CarolynM Great review (as always). I really think I need to read Bunny again, taking into account all the reviews and discussion. I enjoyed it, but I don't think I got the most out of it. 4y

“Being with you is like being in literature. I have no idea where you'll lead me next. But I'm excited. My life could change. And I'm not alone anymore.“
“Bunny“ is a very difficult novel to describe, despite the fact that Awad wears her influences (Twin Peaks, Shirley Jackson, Alice in Wonderland to name a few). Lonely MFA student Samantha Mackey is alternately fascinated & repulsed by her peers, a group of four friends that refer to one👇

vivastory (cont) another as Bunny. Samantha is invited to a party & despite her friend Ava's advice she decides to step through the Looking Glass. There is a great deal of Art House dark humor at play here as well, as Awad lampoons Academic theory & critical word soup. Awad also briefly touched upon privilege & education. As I said Awad isn't necessarily blazing new territory with “Bunny“, despite how strange it is; what is remarkable to me is how she was 4y
vivastory (cont)able to assimilate these influences into something so distinct & refreshing. #back2school #bunnyread @cinfhen @barbarabb 4y
Billypar Excellent review! The word soup moments were great. I don't know if I've heard 'the Body' used before, but it sounds like a real, awful thing. Maybe it's the part of the book that 'gestures at' various other observations? 🤷‍♂️ 4y
See All 13 Comments
merelybookish @Billypar Haha I remember being in a seminar where "the Body" was discussed. She totally nailed academic literary criticism. Great review @vivastory! 4y
vivastory @Billypar The parts with “the Body“ almost seemed like more from art theory than lit theory. Years ago I had a few friends who attended the Art Institute & I would hang out with them fairly often. I can def imagine hearing similar conversations at parties or at galleries 😂 4y
vivastory @merelybookish Thanks! There were some great observations for sure 😂 4y
Cinfhen Excellent review, Scott. I think the “body” comments feed right into the “birthing process” 🙄and the whole idea of pretentiousness at the MFA and other creative programs 4y
vivastory @Cinfhen Thanks for co-hosting with @barbarabb I wish I could've posted more this weekend! That's a really good point, I think you're def right 4y
BarbaraBB Fab review again Scott. I got so much more insights of this book after the discussion and your review. Thanks! 4y
vivastory @BarbaraBB Thanks for co-hosting! Looking forward to the discussion next weekend for #NYRBBookClub 4y
BarbaraBB Me too! 4y
RohitSawant Wonderful review! Seeing all the Litsy love this book has been getting really has me looking forward to it. 4y

Bunny: A Novel | Mona Awad

This is a hard one for me to review. It‘s almost like watching a train wreck - it‘s uncomfortable and shocking and horrifying, but yet you cannot turn away. Twinged with dark humor, yet with some rather gross elements, I found this book in parts riveting and in parts way too unbelievable. But, I had to keep reading. This pandemic has completely changed what books I read - this is the third one featuring some rather graphic scenes. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Librarybelle To say I “liked” this book seems a tad far fetched, but I didn‘t dislike it. The tones of loneliness throughout this novel tugged at me. So, Bunny, I have to give this a Pick. Thanks to @BarbaraBB and @Cinfhen for hosting this #bunnyread , and thanks to #NetGalley for this ARC! 4y
Hooked_on_books I‘m glad you got something out of it, Bunny. I‘m afraid it didn‘t work at all for me. 🐰😵 4y
Librarybelle @Hooked_on_books I think prior to the pandemic I‘d have a different feel for it and probably feel the same way you do. This was so bizarre and not my usual read. 4y
See All 9 Comments
Hooked_on_books Isn‘t it funny when that happens? I‘ve definitely read books that I liked or disliked and could tell I would have had a different response had I read the book at a different time. I actually find that really interesting when it happens. 4y
Librarybelle @Hooked_on_books It‘s definitely interesting! 4y
merelybookish It is memorable! I read it over a year ago and I was unsure how I felt about it. But was still able to participate in the conversation. 4y
Cinfhen Great review!!! And I thought pretty clever. 4y
Librarybelle @merelybookish I like books that stick with you, even after a length of time! 4y
