This has been in my tbr for several years, & thanks to @CoffeeNBooks for hosting the #atreegrowsinbrooklynbuddyread, I have finally read it. This has been a good reading day—I have finished 2 amazing books. ATGIB started off slow, but by the time I got to the 2nd section, I loved it. The ending was bittersweet, as are most changes/endings in our lives. I‘ll want to visit Francie & her fam again. A New York read for #readtheUSA2020.

The Dutch House | Ann Patchett

Pickpick

A few years ago, I read an Ann Patchett book & didn‘t really like it, but I had thought of giving her another chance since Bel Canto & her others are so loved. Reading this for book club gave me an opportunity, & I loved this one. I‘m not sure if it‘s a 5 ⭐️ for me, but it‘s close. I feel like a discussion about it will help me think through the different themes—family, forgiveness, change, moving on from our worst times, etc.

britt_brooke I loved this one, but like you, I‘ve read one of hers that I didn‘t like (Bel Canto). I‘m glad I gave her another go. 2d
Scochrane26 @britt_brooke I read The Magician‘s Assistant. I may try another of hers at some point. 2d
britt_brooke @Scochrane26 Somewhere between the one I hated and the one I loved, I read Commonwealth, which I liked. Her books are all over the place for me. 😬 2d
Scochrane26 @ljuliel This counts as a #readtheUSA2020 book for Pennsylvania. 2d

This was brilliant but not quite a 5 star book because I thought the last part was abit manic, although the ending was great. Such a good idea though and really gets you thinking

This was a decent thriller with good pacing and likable characters. I had a little trouble getting into the groove with Brooke and Asher, mostly because they seemed like they had a lot of back story/connection that is kind of glossed over. Still, an enjoyable read and I will be looking forward to the sequel! I'll be posting a more thorough review on my blog soon, as this is a review copy kindly gifted to me from @revellbooks ⬇️

This #HistoricalFiction is about the copper mine strikes of 1913-1914, the first unionized strike of the Western Federation of Miners, and the involvement of Anna Klobuchar Clemenc and the Women's Auxiliary. The union's goal was an 8-hour workday and better wages. They were up against the powerful Calumet and Hecla Mining Company.

This is an exceptional historical fiction novel, a genre that is often hit or miss for me. While occasionally verging on soap opera-ish, I was fully invested in the story, and Evelyn Hugo herself. I love imperfect and flawed characters like Evelyn. I do wish the supporting cast would have been a bit fleshed out. Harry especially felt a bit flat.

4thhouseontheleft @Bookzombie @MeganAnn There was a time in the middle I wasn‘t sure how I would end up liking this book, but I sped through the last 2/3 yesterday and just couldn‘t put it down! 4d
Eggs Love the stack of antique books in background 4d
Lucy_Anywhere I loved Daisy Jones - sounds like I should bump this to the top of my TBR! 4d
Cinfhen I wasn‘t too much of a fan but there was so much hype and I went in with HIGH expectations 🤪 4d
Bookzombie @4thhouseontheleft I‘m getting close to the halfway mark. I fell asleep last night so didn‘t get far. 4d
Bookzombie @Cinfhen I listened to Daisy first and really liked it, so I‘m trying to keep my expectations under control while I listen to this one. It‘s not easy. 4d
Cinfhen Expectations are a double edged sword @Bookzombie And I often need to remind myself of that 4d
