"Los Angeles Times" Following a terrible fight with her mother over her boyfriend, fifteen-year-old Holly Sykes slams the door on her family and her old life. But Holly is no typical teenage runaway: A sensitive child once contacted by voices she knew only as the radio people, Holly is a lightning rod for psychic phenomena. Now, as she wanders deeper into the English countryside, visions and coincidences reorder her reality until they assume the aura of a nightmare brought to life. For Holly has caught the attention of a cabal of dangerous mystics and their enemies. I read this twice, back to back. I really admire what David Mitchell does; the way his books are so well thought out, and how things tie together. This novel got a lot better in my head as I reread it. It was far more emotional, I understood what the author was attempting to do…my appreciation for it grew and grew.

At first I wasn‘t sure how many more of Mitchell‘s books I‘d read; now I must admit I‘m itching to touch some others.

JLaurenceCohen I did the same thing! You should definitely read Slade House 2mo

Well, things have been weird for me with reading lately…. I finished The Bone Clocks, and that same day turned back to the first page and started rereading it. Thing is, this is such a long book, and I‘ve already been reading it for a while and now I‘m right back at the middle, but I am loving it still.

There‘s a LOT of other stuff I want to get to though, hot books everyone is chatting about, so after this I have to chill on David Mitchell.

quote
Taylor
The Bone Clocks: A Novel | David Mitchell

For most of my life, the world shrank and technology progressed; this was the natural order of things. Few of us clocked on that “the natural order of things” is entirely man-made, and that a world that kept expanding as technology regressed was not only possible but waiting in the wings.

K I‘m gonna go ahead and compare this book to Marlon James‘ “Black Leopard, Red Wolf.” Yes, it‘s good. No it‘s not fantastic. The only reason I never left a review on here for James‘ fantasy epic is because I felt I didn‘t fully grasp some storyline elements and it could do with a reread. I‘m feeling the same about “The Bone Clocks.” I have the kind of neurotic trait where I‘ll reread a book if I didn‘t feel like I fully got it…. No idea why.

SamAnne Agree with the Marlon James novel. But I‘m not sure I could ha due reliving all the violence in it for a second read. 3mo
Taylor @SamAnne Yeah, I actually forgot how violent it is. Violence doesn‘t bug me at all for some reason; I cannot watch horror movies though. 3mo

A drone circled above us. It would be armed. I thought of its operator, picturing a crewcut nineteen-year-old called Ryan at a base in Dallas, sucking an ice-cold Frappuccino through a straw. He could open fire on the clinic, kill everyone in and near it, and never smell the cooked meat.

I consider airing my theory that our culture‘s coping strategy towards death is to bury it under consumerism and Samsara, that the Riverside Villas of the world are screens that enable this self-deception, and that the elderly ARE guilty: guilty of proving to us that our willful myopia about death is exactly that.

Probably the fastest I‘ve ever read a book of this length. Compared to my usual speed, I basically inhaled it. Yay, summer and free time and most of all, David Mitchell! Still one of my favorites.

How am I *still* not finished with this book! The conflict resolution ended on page 548. I'm now on page 570 of 624, what is left to happen? What more could you have to say David Mitchell? How many more inconsequential characters POVs can there be? This book is driving me crazy.

laur89 This is sort of how I felt about Mitchell‘s other book, Slade House. I realized later this was another book of his on my TBR... so it kind of discouraged me from starting it 😬 2y
Ruthiella If I remember correctly that last bit is a kind of an epilogue and it also ties into part of Cloud Atlas. I enjoyed this book but it is not my favorite from Mitchell. 2y

How do you feel about amnesia in characters? Or characters that don't know what they truly are until halfway through a book? I find it annoying most of the time. Especially when everything is spelled out so clearly it's hard to believe they've been in denial their entire life, going out of their way not to believe the signs.

Texreader It feels like a cop out to me to give a character amnesia. It‘s like an excuse to explain every detail rather than working them through a plot. 2y

A quote from Bone Clocks .. but it reads like poetry & there is a bit of rhyming ...

✨Just now and then who he really is smiles out at me through the blacks of Jacko‘s eyes,
Like someone watching you from a train zipping past.
At those times I almost want to wave , even though he is just across the table, or we‘re passing on the stairs. ✨

Bone Clocks | David Mitchell

If you like sci-fi, you will enjoy The Bone Clocks. This book supplies the mythology that transforms Mitchell's other books into a larger "meta-novel." Of the six sections, the first, second, and fifth are utterly compelling, while the other three aren't quite as good.

640 pages...I‘ve no problem with 640 pages...but this book...it just took me FOREVER to read. I couldn‘t get into it. I just kept thinking it was going to get better but it never did for me and it took me 4 weeks to read. I am so glad I finally finished it!!

DivineDiana This took me forever to read as well! I ended up using multi formats, so I could “read”it wherever I was. Ended up liking it, but so glad when I finally finished! 3y

#AdventRecommends Day 2: The Bone Clocks

This book is amazing , the twists & turns throw you off the scent of the story but you are caught in a web making you turn each page till that moment when it hits you & you are in love with this story. I have given many people this book over the years & everyone falls in love with it at a different point

This one took a while to get going, but I kept reading. Really, I couldn't stop. This author grabbed my brain and wouldn't let go. I'm glad I finished the book, and I am definitely going to look for more of his work. I hate to say anything that happened, but if you like literary fiction and have a soft spot for psychics and timeshifting, find this book!

Thanks, @MommyWantsToReadHerBook for the encouragement! I loved it!

MommyWantsToReadHerBook Yay I'm so glad!! 3y
JLaurenceCohen I love all of Mitchell's book. Characters like Marinus show up in other books, creating a meta-novel. 3y
lahousewyfe @JLaurenceCohen I loved this book, and I'm truing to pick the next one. Any recommendations? 3y

I reached the halfway point of this 600+ page novel and I'm still not sure what the hell is going on! I can't make myself bail though. Something keeps dragging me forward. This makes me think that David Mitchell is some sort of magician.

For now, I'm avoiding him and knitting in front of the fire.

MommyWantsToReadHerBook Things should become a litter clearer soon. I loved this book so much! 3y
lahousewyfe @MommyWantsToReadHerBook So glad to hear! The writing continues to pull me through. If only I can write this well someday!!!! 3y

I finished this yesterday. It was taking me forever, so I ended up increasing my efforts with a hard copy, CDs for the car and a Playaway for audio walks. Fantastic storytelling. Time period spans 1984- 2043. Six different worlds filled with a legion of characters. Thankfully, one HollySykes, ties everything together. Intelligent fantasy. Battles between good and evil. Not quite certain what I read, but I am glad that I did.

TrishB Holly is one of my fav characters 💕 3y
DivineDiana @TrishB Yes, she is an incredible woman! 💗 3y

Ran into some eerie bird friends on my audio walk!

Cathythoughts Yikes 😱 3y
Reggie Omg, in that movie, I just always wanted to yell,”Just stay in the house!!!!” And then you get to the end where they started pecking their way into the attic!!!!!!!! Lol 3y
DivineDiana @Cathythoughts My thoughts exactly! 😉 3y
DivineDiana @Reggie I know! They always make the wrong decisions! The funny thing is last night I attended an author talk, and he saw birds in an entirely different way! My next post! 😉 (edited) 3y

Stopped to smell the roses on my audio walk! This seems to be moving very slowly, and it can‘t be renewed! 😬

Booksnchill I am impressed you can keep it straight on audio- I took pages of notes when I read it with @tjwill last year! 3y
tjwill Pretty view on your walk! Are you enjoying it on audio? Does it have multiple narrators? I agree with @Booksnchill about it being a tricky one. 3y
DivineDiana @Booksnchill So far, so good. I can see where notes would be helpful! It seems as though it is a very long book. 3y
DivineDiana @tjwill It is nice! Yes, I am enjoying the audio. There are multiple narrators. 3y

I need to read this soon:

“Mitchell is one of the most electric writers alive. To open a Mitchell book is to set forth on an adventure. . . . In his latest novel, The Bone Clocks, Mitchell has spun his most far-flung tale yet. . . . Strange and magical.” —The Boston Globe

Adored this!! I‘ve read a few David Mitchell books now and generally I‘ve disliked them but felt there was something i was ~nearly~ appreciating that made it worth keeping trying, and I‘m glad I soldiered on to read this one cause it was really perfect. So subtle, complex and original but didn‘t feel up itself even though it easily could have done. Amazing characters and worldbuilding. Threw the genre playbook out the window, which I appreciate.

KathyWheeler I loved this book. 3y
BookwormM I love Mitchell and now you have found a book you love you might appreciate the others as Mitchell has said he views them all as chapters in a very large book and characters appear in multiple books... 3y

Next up! I remember this one coming out when I was in school and thinking the cover was just the most beautiful thing I‘ve ever seen. A little disappointed that I‘m listening to it and not owning and touching that gorgeous cover but I try not to mind that kind of thing! Maybe if it‘s good I‘ll buy it one day

TrishB Love this one 👍🏻 3y
Emilymdxn @TrishB awesome!! Im not far in but I love it so far 3y
emilyhaldi This book is a trip 🤪 3y
Emilymdxn @emilyhaldi yep I have no idea what‘s happening really but I do like it a lot!! I just found out it‘s related to another book I haven‘t read which is probably a factor in me not understanding it, maybe I should read that book 3y

Late summer read. It takes some time to wrap your head around it, and to understand how the different narratives intertwine, but it is worth the time in the end.

July wrap-up! I finished 9 books in July and attempted to participate in a few readathons. Favorites were Not That Bad, The Bone Clocks, Spinning Silver, Iron & Magic, and Alisha Rai 📚📚📚#readingresolutions @Jess7

RachLovesTV I have Not That Bad on my kindle right now, but I haven't been able to bring myself to read it yet. I'm glad you liked it, that's encouraging. 3y
Beachesnbooks @RachLovesTV It was fantastic but such a difficult read emotionally. I read most of it in one sitting & I wouldn't recommend doing that...if I were you I'd only read an essay or two at a time, reading it all at once was really overwhelming 3y
RachLovesTV That's exactly what I was fearing, so I think I'll do what you suggest. Essays seem to lend themselves well to that, too. 3y

whatrebeccasread The cover on your copy of The Bone Clocks looks so so much better than the version I read! Have you read much David Mitchell?? 3y
Beachesnbooks @whatrebeccasread This was my second David Mitchell book, I read Cloud Atlas a few years ago. I enjoyed them both but liked The Bone Clocks a bit more. I might try Slade House this fall! Any you would recommend? 3y

Loved this puzzle of a novel, where each section jumps forward in time with a different narrator, but all come to hinge on Holly, who may or may not be the key in a secret global war between two different sects who meddle with time.

TheWordJar I need to read this one! I read Slade House last year and absolutely loved it. I think that book is somehow related to The Bone Clocks. 🤔 3y
AlizaApp @TheWordJar not sure because I have not read Slade House yet, but this one was great! 3y

Someone please tell me the point of this book will come soon? I'm almost ready to bail, but I've invested 300 pages into it already...

Jennick2004 😭 that drives me nuts! You have to finish now 🤣 3y
Readalotflora My theory is: if you don't feel like it now, just put it away. Too many books too little time. Just go back to it when you wanted to. Sometimes a not-so-interesting book at a time can become marvellous with a change of our stage of life and circumstances. Just don't torture yourself when the vibe is not right and it may not be fair to the book too if you are just dragging your way through it. 3y

BookwormM I love this book and practically everything Mitchell has written but it is not for everyone. If you want a linear story that is resolved at the end it won‘t happen here 🤣 3y
TamarackTrail @BookwormM maybe that's a good thing for me to know moving forward with it 3y
Mandigolightly Nope. I read this entire freaking book and you end up seeing how it comes together but it‘s awful 3y
