Making Movies | Sidney Lumet
41 posts | 12 read | 2 to read
From one of America's most acclaimed directors comes a book that is both a professional memoir and a definitive guide to the art, craft, and business of the motion picture. Drawing on 40 years of experience on movies ranging from Long Day's Journey Into Night to The Verdict, Lumet explains the painstaking labor that results in two hours of screen magic. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Pickpick

OK account of the nuts and bolts of moviemaking by Lumet. Sometimes he goes on a little long about his grievances with the process like too much producer control, etc. It is a really big team effort and sometimes results are great.

I've started reading a filmmaking memoir by Lumet, a great director, who died in 2011. He did the Verdict with Paul Newman, which is a great comeback story about a lawyer who had sunk pretty low.

What do you think guys? 😃

pppooraikul For me, always books before movies unless I think I probably never gonna finish the book in this life. 😂 6y
Samplergal Definitely reading the book first, however, it doesn‘t always occur in that order. Too many books to read these days. 6y
Suzze Always read the book first. 6y
See All 23 Comments
FantasyChick I'm going to be the odd man out here but I always prefer to see the movie before I read the book whenever possible 😊 6y
Schnoebs I was originally book first but I‘d keep getting upset when I‘d see movies that didn‘t follow the plot well. Not I‘m more of a watch the movie first and read the book second to enjoy the details 6y
MishAnn Generally, I read the book first. I didn‘t this time with A Simple Favor 6y
julesG Book first! Then I can bash the film. 😜 6y
a.bookish.byrd Book first, if I can. 6y
Susanita Book first if possible, but sometimes I will see a movie only to find out later that it‘s based on a book! 6y
Elma Usually, I read the book first. Unless I can't get it in time or didn't know it was a book. 6y
keys_on_fire I try to watch the movie first nowadays, when possible. I find I enjoy the movie AND the book that way. When reading the book second, there are still surprises because you can‘t usually condense a book to two hours adequately. Plus it eliminates the possibility of my favorite part being left out. @FantasyChick & @Schnoebs I‘m with you! (edited) 6y
TheSpineView Got to read the book! 6y
SilversReviews Read the book first!! 😊 6y
RenePenn Read the book first! 6y
GripLitGrl Book first 6y
tammysue Read the book first. 6y
BittersweetBooks Book first, almost always! 6y
LapReader Book is the only acceptable answer 6y
Wordsareweapons Book first 6y
CoffeeCatsBooks Definitely, the book first. 6y
Chinadoll The book is always better 6y
zzz Book first usually 6y
HFoster Either way, but reading it before can be fun with friends. 6y

BookishMe @MinDea thanks... “‘Of course — that‘s where it was heading all along.‘ And yet the inevitability mustn‘t eliminate surprise.”
This paragraph pulled me up short. Last month I wrote about a particular spot in a piece of music, “it feels both like a surprise and like it obviously couldn‘t do anything else.” Eerie and fascinating and oh this funny funny thing called life. 📚🎼

And, to answer the chapter heading, yes, Paul *is* a shy man. And a wonderful actor. And race car driver. And gorgeous.” I think I‘m just going to have to watch The Verdict, y‘all.

“Often the last to arrive is the writer. He is last because he knows that at this point he is the target. At this moment, anything wrong can only be his fault, since nothing else has happened yet. Need #BookToScreen Nominations for September!
Picked a theme of US History. Can be historical fiction, non fiction, a memoir, (auto)biography, etc. Even if you don't plan on participating in this #LitsyBuddyRead feel free to nominate or tag someone who would have some good nominations! 📚

kendrastephaniekaryn This one might be fun! Not sure if it counts because it's not ENTIRELY serious. 7y
monkeygirlsmama @kendrastephaniekaryn It was a fun book though! 7y
monkeygirlsmama I've read this one before, but really liked it. 7y
See All 38 Comments
MinDea @monkeygirlsmama I have read that book. It is really good @kendrastephaniekaryn I am not sure about that one. Will look it up and see. Thank you both for the nominations. I will need to repost to see if I cam get some more. Maybe the theme is not a good one?? 7y
kendrastephaniekaryn I thought of another one! It's hard to think of books that have been adapted. I'll tag a few more. 7y
kendrastephaniekaryn (Not "screen", but it's a huge Broadway hit!) 7y
monkeygirlsmama Oh gosh I forgot about the titles needing to be from books that were adapted into films. Sorry about my suggestion earlier. I don't think it qualifies. Will keep thinking. 🙃 7y
MinDea @kendrastephaniekaryn those are all great! Thank you! 7y
MinDea no worries @monkeygirlsmama ! If you think of any let me know! 7y
MinDea @annahenke @Laura317 @Lisareads @Lupita.Reads any recommendations for this #LitsyBuddyRead I host? When I first joined Litsy you guys all gave me some awesome recommendations in this genre. Catch is that it has to be a movie or in the works to be a movie... 7y
MinDea @Jess7 thoughts? 7y
Jess7 I didn't really like the book Hidden figures but the movie was excellent - maybe something like that? 7y
Jess7 12 Years A Slave is a good one. 7y
Jess7 Is there a movie of this one? If so, then this is my pick bc it's on my #TBR - but I didn't know it was US History related 7y
Jess7 The book by Truman capote was amazing but I didn't know there was a movie! 7y
Laura317 How about 7y
Read4life @Jess7 & @MinDea Orphan Train is being made into a movie. If that counts it's my recommendation. 7y
Read4life It takes place in London and the US but is historical fiction 7y
MinDea How about this one 7y
MinDea This movie is getting great reviews 7y
underthebelljar A lot of good recs so far! The article also mentions 7y
underthebelljar Not sure if it fits exactly.. 7y
underthebelljar Would a play count? I LOVED this and would be fine with rereading it 7y
underthebelljar This one's nonfiction about the Watergate scandal 7y
annahenke Wish I could help but I'm drawing a blank! For fiction and US history, I really like Their Eyes Were Watching God but it was only a TV movie and it was not a good adaptation at all. The only other thing I can think of is one someone is already doing a read along with - Gone With the Wind. 7y
